It's very tempting to take him up on it just to see what he turns in.

Sam Hunt (robosam), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

letting the publicists write the pieces themselves IS the next logical step, guys

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Well there's Coley (for instance)

maybe he's actually dividing his existence into the freudian triad of id, ego and super ego, and actually wants his id to write the piece... you know, to avoid that whole nasty conflict of interest thingy. sam, whatdya think? has anyone ever written three reviews from three different freudian perspectives?

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

if they have, i hope that my name is in no way attached to it. whether or not it's about spiderbait.

Sam Hunt (robosam), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Let Charlie Kaufman on this guy and then we'll get a film where Mark Ruffalo sits in a room surrounded by records and talks to himself. BOX OFFICE GOLD!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"Spiderbait express dude. It's leavin' with or without you. All aboard." Actually, wait, are we running a banner ad for them? The revolution is coming? Jesus. (And I mean like that scene in Last Temptation of Christ when Satan comes out as a snake and it's Mary Magdalene's voice pitch-shifted down and it goes "Ohhhh, Jeeesussss" and explodes? Yeah that kind of "Jesus.")

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

In a syndicated featurette re Sonic Nurse, Chuck Myers quotes Thurston as saying that Byron wrote a press relase for NYC Peace & Flowers, which he described as the first of a trilogy about "the geography of New York." So, that's the "number 1 question" they get from publicists now, about the trilogy. (Not sure what the question is, exactly, but that's what it's about.)Of course, this was presented as a press release, not a review. But I wouldn't do that, even if I weren't reviewing the act being promoted. Not that anybody's likely to ask.

That's a brilliant idea ken, even if you aren't serious.

Doc, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

which albums warrant a review by the id ego and super ego? do any albums absolutely
require it? i'd like to think so, though i'm not sure which...

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

That Voice review of Secret Machines was by the id (interesting use of nebulizer). Superego is the conscience, right? Sure is a lot of unconscienable music around, quality-wise, anyway. I nominate Ashlee Simpson for such a review.

Docat, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

some should pitch it...

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Obviously part of the Interscope/Geffen/A&M/Walmart secret agenda to promote Ram Jam, whose "Black Betty" is obtusely and stupidly covered on the Spiderbait CD.

Schnooky Freerecords (Ian Christe), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, at least they do a better version than Nick Cave did.

chuck, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

And I bet if Leadbelly ever heard Ram Jam's version, he'd think that was somewhat obtuse in his own right (not that I'd agree with him).

chuck, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Personally, I think "Black Betty," at least done moderately Ram Jam style, is one of those songs that I'd like no matter who did it. And since Spiderbait's version is bound to be the first hit version in 17 years, I'm keeping my copy of the CD single (though not the album.) (I like Jet's and Ashlee Simpson's albums fine, too, oddly enough.)

chuck, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

None of them are a fraction as good as *Portrait of the Artist as a Young Ram,* though, obviously. (Or Ram's Jam debut, which sometimes I like more, and sometimes less, than their uber-metal followup.)

chuck, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm... i'm not really sure if you realize it or not... maybe i'm not getting something.... but are you having an id ego super ego conversation w/ yrself right now?
