"Fashion Rocks"
Beyonce, Black Eyed Peas, Hoobastank, Mary J. Blige, Avril Lavigne, Rod Stewart, Usher, Alicia Keys, Faith Hill. (Radio City Music Hall Sept. 8 at 8.)

Could the torments of Hell be any worse?

For what it's worth, I have a few kind words for isolated moments of Rod Stewart's catalog, but the rest? CRAP!

there used to be this thing called 'lollapalooza'

Is Dennis Leary hosting again?

Mary J. Rocks - are you nuts?

it is pretty desperate though.

Mary J. Rocks - are you nuts?

It's probably not a surprise to learn that I do not care for Blige's music in the slightest. But that's not the point. The point is this. Her music -- regardless of my feelings for it -- does not rock. It may groove or swoon or chill or bling or whatever, but it does NOT rock.

"fashion" being key, not "rocks"

clearly.

My MOM went to go see Rod Stewart this past weekend. Yipes. According to her, he did not play "Infatuation"...much to my disapointment.

I saw Mary J. sing live at a VH-1 awards show (I probably would never buy tickets and go see her) and I have to say it was one of the most impressive and intense things I've ever seen and heard in my life. I bet that this 'Fashion Rocks' show would have many surprising moments like that. The thing is, many of these acts are 'consummate performers' and can probably win over virtually any audience - it's what they were born to do!

...but they don't rock, that's my point.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

But most of them do love Jesus ... and fashion.

Bruce S. Urquhart (BanjoMania), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, I meant to add that she actually did! (in a gospel/rock kind of way) - and I'll go out on a limb and say even you might have enjoyed it. But I see your point. I'm sure you'll disagree with me when I say that Avril rocks.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry xpost

I'm sure you'll disagree with me when I say that Avril rocks.

In a vain, fruitless attempt at rocking, Avril merely rattles.

The only artists on the bill that comes even close to rocking is Rod the Mod, who hasn't rocked in some time (now content to croon standards in a dinner jacket).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah rod's croon move is really disappointing as his voice is great for rock and pretty great for disco but poorly suited for standards.

Oddly, that is almost precisely what my Mom said.

i finally heard every picture tells a story for the first time the other day - oddly disappointing: i remember seeing it ranked NUMBER ONE ROCK ALBUM ALLTIME on some big mag poll a while back, the only non-beatles/dylan/stones/petsounds/astralweeks pure classic rock album i can think of i've seen get the tag and i had high hopes cuz that version of "i'm losing you" has always been a HUGE classic rock radio fave of mine. it's a bit, um, dorky kinda (like lesser early van, only it feels the need to play up the folk side)(basically 'amazing grace' just really annoyed me is what i'm saying i guess), but side two of that thing is pretty incredible.
