Disco around the World

Inspired by my increasing fascination with Bappi Lahiri and the early 80's Indian disco phenomena and fuelled by the prog disco thread and the italo disco thread i wonder if anyone can recommend more non US disco from the 70's/80's?

i have the nascente comp African disco, but really only two tracks: Malinga Five's Kaloule woman, and Black Blood's AIE (also covered by bananarama as their debut single) hit the mark.

One of the greatest basslines of all time is on 2 Man Sound's "Que Tal America" which sounds like it's straight out of NYC, but is actually from Belgium!

Small Change had Peter Shapiro on WFMU a week or so ago doing a Euro-Disco history, not all inclusive, but much great stuff.

currently listening to: VST & Co: Awitin Mo At Isasayaw Ko - I think(no liner notes) this is a hits comp of a 70's Phillipines band. Very disco era Bee gees. In Filipino.

Gilles Vigneault, "Mon Pays"

"We All Need Love", Domenic Troiano

Good Canadian disco pop - I'm guessing '79-ish. Later covered by the Italo dance-pop act Double You (who I secretly love).

I have some great Turkish pop comps that have a smattering of disco. Ajda Pekkan is one I'd look for. She did a nice cover of Aznavour and a few other uptempo tunes. I also found an anonymous compilation while in Istanbul. Not sure who arranged them, but it's a number of traditional Turkish songs done up disco-like.

Boney M, Luv, Belle Epoque are not bad, but obvious choices from the Euro zone.

Gino Vanelli is a good Canadian choice, as is Patsy Gallant (who did an English disco version of Vigneault's "Mon Pays"). Montreal was THE disco capital of North America at one point, with over 200 clubs in the late 70s.

Lepa Brena & Slatki greh (Lepa Brena = the girl singer, Slatki greh = her backing band) excelled at fusing disco with Serbian folk (which, fear not, has nothing to do with what is commonly referred to as "folk" in the western world!). my fave tune is "Decko mi je skolarac" - it's incredibly funky and relentless, just hook after hook after killer hook! also great: "Disko urnebes", "Bato bato", "Uske pantalone".

Track down the first two or three albums by Arabesque (they were from Germany, but apparently they only ever had any hits in Russia).

Isn't Patsy Gallant's "From New York To L.A." just a rewrite of "Mon Pays"?

i want to know more about african disco

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 7 January 2007 00:39 (nineteen years ago)

i've only heard the comp that's mentioned a few times already, and I must say 'kaloule woman' is godly. The whole comp is funk-heavy, no-gloss and mostly good.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Sunday, 7 January 2007 01:08 (nineteen years ago)

AIE A'Mwana might be one of my favorite disco tracks ever. and that's saying a lot.
