When purchasing and electro-acoustic guitar, what are the main factors to take into consideration?

I'm thinking about buying a relatively decent acousitc guitar that I can put through an amp. I'm planning on spending £250-£600. Any tips?

Try your fave Electric through a Boss Acoustic Simulator pedal first.

That would require purchasing an electric guitar (and the pedal).

Play it for a while first, checking that there's no buzzing cos of dodgy frest, and also that the string spacing suits the fingers of your fretting hand.

i'd concentrate on just getting a solid, playable, full sounding guitar, then pick up one of these (or something like it)

I think acoustic-electrics always sound horrible -- very tinny and thin. Why not use a microphone on a real acoustic?

Also there is a 'I Love Guitar' forum on ilx...but this post has already gotten more responses in ten minutes than that entire has in a few days...

("pick up" ha ha ha)

and for pity's sake don't buy an ovation!

Ooops, I'd assumed you had a scalextric guitar already.

1. Just worry about weather its pretty
2. try them in front of a full length mirror if it lends you the right 'this is about music, not fame man' chic, then fuck the sound, you are on to a winner.

So getting a regular acoustic and fitting a pickup is the way to go?

my acoustic electric sounds nice. but requires the proper strings to do so. Soft.

Why not use a microphone on a real acoustic?

there's no question that that's the best way to go for pure sound, but it's also impractical in a lot of live situations. so you're going to want to have a pickup. besides, it's fun to have the option of running your acoustic through a distortion pedal, which can provide hours and hours of pleasure.

those pickups that you stick in the soundhole are one option. the other thing you can add to any acoustic guitar is a martin gold thinline pickup, which, assuming you are something like me, you will have to get professionally installed, but it's worth it.
