Is that REALLY the singer from Loverboy??!

I'm inspired by the "Wrinkled, Fat and Ready to Rock" thread, of course, but this just defies belief:

RAWK

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, it's him. He looked basically the same a couple years ago on Where Are They Now? He's got a surprisingly nasal voice and blames no fun grunge bands for his band's downfall.

Would someone please put a red headband on a photo of Jabba The Hutt? Thanks.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

It's funny that he would blame grunge for their downfall, because by 1986 he was already a) a fat fuck, b) trying to go solo.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Like he was scoring any hits anyway in the late eighties (as Barry noted)! He should be blaming Guns 'n' Roses if anything, he and Axl seem to have 'evolved' together.

'Inexplicably enduring'!? Fuck off

dave q, Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Then again Dean & Frenette have only themselves to blame for leaving Streetheart

dave q, Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Streetheart Dean Frenette -- that must have been the actual Missy lyric.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

btw is Dean REALLY the same Dean from X-Ray Spex or has that just been wishful thinking for critics who don't want to bother corroborating.

BTW, thanks to Scott Woods' CD-R "Tonite You're On The Loose! (Can-Con Headband Rock 1976-1984)" I actually know wtf dave q is talking about (sorta).

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"He's delicious," said Dana Sharratt, 40, of Tacoma. "Listen, he brings it all back for me. I had a 1978 Camaro, I was wearing black stiletto heels and did a lot of damage to the hood of my car. And I used to listen to Eddie."

There is a song in this quote.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Harlequin the other night and they're heavier than fuck now. They played bits of "Smoke on the Water" and "Purple Haze". The kick-drum pedal broke so George did a monologue about 'free drugs' while they were fixing it. Also he moves like Ian Curtis.

dave q, Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I got curious Anthony, and found this:

Yeah, he's a real swinger.

I can't believe that Harlequin is still at it. They were already a washed up second-rate bar band back in 1987, along with other fantastic acts like Hypno-Go-Go. I mean, shit, I still like some of their old hits, like "I Did it for Love" and "Superstitious Feeling" and "Innocence", but that was over 20 years ago now. Where the hell did you see them, dave? Are they actually stil touring outside of Manitoba?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, I figured Rob Sheffield was being a lazy journalist there.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Harlequin just played here, at a dodgy pub on Victoria and Kingsway, actually just across from Pho Bich Nga. yeah! 'Innocence' was great!

Honeymoon Suite came through too, and they seem to be doing better in the oldies dept., as they got to play a real club downtown. I still like 'Wave Babies', but not so much 'Burning in Love'.

I was hoping Loverboy would come up on the Heart 70's/80's thread, for the Wilson/Reno power ballad 'Almost Paradise'.. 'we're knocking on heaven's door/Almost paradise!/How could we ask for more'

Yesterday while watching MuchMoreMusic Retro I saw the Canadian equivilent of "We Are the World" and can confirm this fact aboot Mike Reno.

Vic Funk, Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Tears Are Not Enough! It even had two lines in French, didn't it?

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

As an aside, why are KC & the Sunshine Band and the Village People a "natural fit"?

Joseph McCombs, Thursday, 26 August 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

re cover art - 'Victim of a Song' vs 'Blackout' vs 'Obsession'

"Like he was scoring any hits anyway in the late eighties..."

What about 'Pig and Elephant DNA Just Don't Splice'?

When was that released?

Sasha (sgh), Friday, 27 August 2004 04:06 (twenty-one years ago)

those pictures of the Loverboy fans are hilarious (and their captions!)
