"Run On" - Moby

He barely did any work on this track and yet it's one of the greatest things ever. Utter, total genius and a prime example of how shameless pirate-esque lowest-common-denominator sampling can still result in fantastic music.

ADDENDUM: "Give It Up" still kicks the shit out of this song but I'm not mad at Moby for that.

(Can you tell I'm just babbling about the stuff I threw into my playlist today?)

I heard this song in Virgin Megastore once and softshoe was breaking out all over the place

The only two real gems on Play are "Porcelain" and "Everloving"

was my favorite on Play for a long time at first; still sounds great, as does the album, overexposure be damned

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Saturday, 28 August 2004 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"Run On" is a gr8 track, though it suffers from some arhythmic sequencing.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 28 August 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

never got why he bothered to make this AND 'Honey'

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Saturday, 28 August 2004 10:49 (twenty-one years ago)

in the newspaper 'entertainment' supplement here they have a regular feature "A BAD WEEK FOR", and last week it was "A BAD WEEK FOR: MOBY", because he had snorted an entire &400 bag of cocaine (apparently the first time he'd ever done the stuff) that he had taken from a stripper without paying her, then had to buy her an extremely expensive bottle of champagne to calm her down, and then he called over an ex-girlfriend and they 'made love all night long'. how is that not in fact THE BEST DAY EVER?

How could anything suffer from arhythmia?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 28 August 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

It sounds like there's a half-second break in the music after each sample!!!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 28 August 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

how is that not in fact THE BEST DAY EVER?

We are all made of blow.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 28 August 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Where the hell does the doo-wop sample come from? Anybody know???

What's "Give It Up"?

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 28 August 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"Give It Up" by The Goodmen starts off with a sample of the Brazilian drumming from Paul Simon's "The Obvious Child" and turns it into down-and-dirty thumpnasty booty-banging house music.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 29 August 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

(Also, he did both "Run On" and "Honey" because both songs are genius and work better than most of the other tracks on _Play_.)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 29 August 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

_Play_ is now underrated, isn't it?

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

wtf no

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

It's still on Spin's Electronica Primer. People aren't calling it absolutely fucking worthless yet (I'm not saying it IS worthless, I enjoy about a third of it, I'm saying it would have to be called worthless to be underrated).

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Matos and Xgau as well as SPIN still love it, so that's some critical consensus. I'm sure Rolling Stone still loves it. And Blender at the very least keeps printing a picture of Moby with a sock on his dick (and I think they put Play in their top 1000 whatever).

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

That comment was more directed at the legions of "Moby is icky-poo" comments that seem to have followed this album amongst non-critic musi aesthetes since its release.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

He is icky-poo though. I hope he gets stomped by Obie.

Leon "Marshall" Czolgosz (Nicole), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

At least 2/3 of that album is enjoyable.
