oldfield screwed! right now this feels like a top ten single to me. it's crunk's "dilemma" except five shades spookier. princess' verse is great too. ten times on repeat now - is the album this good?

the crime mob lp is so one-note it might as well be ambient music.

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 29 August 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

(i left it on a payphone.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 29 August 2004 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

ah well. we'll always have knuck.

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 29 August 2004 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

leaving shitty promo CD's at various places around town is my version of chick tracts

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 29 August 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i just found a copy of this in my big pile of promos. if it sucks maybe i'll leave it on a payphone too.

i guess now it's only a matter of time before gareth hears this.

The single will probably make my Top Ten, might even make Top 5, mainly for the chime riff, which stays eerie in the minor-key crunk way and then resolves into beauty, almost as if it were Europop.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 02:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Which I take it from Mark's post is an Oldfield riff dipped in molasses.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

YES

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i auditioned this for a friend tonight and fell over myself trying to convey just how wonderful i think that little melody shape is. i'm sure it's got some special modal quality that's unusual in pop. fwiw frank i wasn't implying that this is actually an oldfield sample, just that it reminded me of his stuff, in terms of both sonics *and* structure.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 04:13 (twenty-one years ago)

It's just a mediocre Juicy J/DJ Paul rip off though. The fat bass is the best part of this song, and Gangsta Boo on the remix.

five months pass...
what exactly does it mean to "knuck if you buck?"

eman (eman), Thursday, 17 February 2005 03:09 (twenty-one years ago)

basically: anyone who talks tough better be prepared to fight

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 17 February 2005 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah that makes sense. for some reason it always makes me think of this bar-kays record i have with this amazing live shot on the back captioned by each bandmembers nickname, two of which are respectively "knuck" and "buckboard."

eman (eman), Thursday, 17 February 2005 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

one of my top 10 songs of 2004!

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 17 February 2005 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

me too.

"stilettos (pumps)" is the new single and it's great as well.

one time gaffled 'em up, Thursday, 17 February 2005 04:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I don't know if i agree w/ the one note thing but yeah "Knuck if you Buck" was one of the best singles last year and I've played "Stilettos" a bunch too.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 17 February 2005 04:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I always thought it was "knuck" = put on your brass knuckles if you "buck" = you are about to fight. Regardless, it rules. BTW upthread, Frank Kogan way OTM.

greg ginn thought neubauten was bullshit, so do i..., Thursday, 17 February 2005 04:08 (twenty-one years ago)

special mention should go to that "rap is like cocaine" track.

(haha dude, who wears brass knuckles anymore?)

¬_¬ (PUNXSUTAWNEY PENIS), Thursday, 17 February 2005 06:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Grand Theft Auto protagonists.

greg ginn thought neubauten was bullshit, why don't you? (smile), Thursday, 17 February 2005 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

It reminds me of that "I aint neva scared" song by Bonecrusher I believe? I love when the boasts get so intimidating they're out of hand.

eight years pass...

i heard this song for the first time yesterday and i'm really really into the use of tuned timpani samples to double the bass line
