Fast, (almost) poppy Melvins song: does it exist? What is it?

I saw the Melvins about two years ago and the next-to-last song they played was actually FAST and even kind of POPPY. Can't recall any of the words, but it was great. Any clue? Would this have been a cover? It was unique in their set. I want to download it without having to listen to a ton of sludge first.

(Melvins also NEVER SPOKE ONCE during their show; they had an illuminated sign that read "MELVINS" in block letters for the first 45 minutes. Instead of leaving the stage after their set they simply stood still in darkness for two minutes before playing their "encore," at which point the lighted sign switched to "THANKS." It was beautiful.)

Mabye "Bar-X The Rocking M"?

It's not super fast, but it's probably the poppiest they ever got. It's on the Stag album.

Honey Bucket from Houdini, nearly punk - though its hardly "pop"

OK, not "pop" -- bad word choice. "Tuneful," I meant. Appreciate the input.

Buzzo chatted up the audience in Seattle at the Capitol Hill Block Party a month or so ago for 15 minutes before they began playing music. Most of it was calculatedly meaningless small talk too. "Have you guys been to the Bad Juju Lounge a few doors away?".... "No?"........."Well, you should."....... "It's pretty nice in there."......"You should all check it out after the show."..... "So, anyway, my mom was going to come out to see me play this show, but she heard that there might be a 'bad element' in the audience or something like that."....."Thanks a fucking lot, Seattle. Now I can't have my own mother watch me perform. Your welcome."...... "So, how are the Dodgers doing here in Los Angeles?" "I hear they're having a good year this time." (goes on for 15 minutes while the audience screams.. "JUST FUCKING PLAY ALREADY, FUCK!")..... 15 minutes go by, Buzzo looks at his watch "Oh, well, I guess it's time to play, well here's what our first three songs are going to be like. Our first one is off our album "Stoner Witch". Our second song is not on ANY of our records. And our third song is the one that's coming out real soon that's a collaboration with Lustmord.. anyway, whatever, sit back and enjoy the show.". Buzzo spoke not a word since the beginning of the set aside from singing. One song was a 15 minute noise jam with a triggered parking structure fire alarm set off and strobing off Kevin's amp. More rock. No encore. Everyone's ears were bleeding. Good night!

Someone has to cull all the stories of the Melvins' live routines in a book somewhere.

&&&Boris&&&, Monday, 6 September 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it isn't "Honey Bucket," though that is mighty fine. On to d/l "Bar-X."

The Alice Cooper cover at the end of Lysol is pretty poppy.

(Well, there's always the Melvins + Leif Garrett cover of "Smells Like"...)

&&&Boris&&&, Monday, 6 September 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, which AC song do they cover?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 September 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, "The Ballad of Dwight Fry", right?

Of course "Stag" is the ONE Melvins album that hardly anybody on slsk has, and there are queues like you wouldn't believe.

Wait, I finally got hold of "Bar-X," and THAT ISN'T IT. I'm on to "Buck Owens" now. MAYBE IT WAS A FUCKING COVER AFTER ALL. On I go. *sigh* P.S. I have Yahoo Messenger.

snazz, Monday, 6 September 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, sorry, Snazz.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 September 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sweet Willy Rollbar" has a real catchy riff and is quite fast.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 6 September 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Melvins did also cover the Germs' "Lexicon Devil".

&&&Boris&&&, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 05:49 (twenty-one years ago)

..which, in retrospect, is kinda catchy and almost poppy compared to rest of the Melvins oevre. (Maybe it was "Theresa Screams"? hahahahahah, oh i kill me.)

There's a song on their AmRep singles collection called - I think it's called - "In the Rain", which is a pop-punk thing sung in a fake British accent. Or maybe real. The old bass player was a limey. Coulda been him singing.

Mike Dixon (Mike Dixon), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

'The Brain Center At Mr Whipples' is fast and almost poppy...
