prog Vs art rock

the excellent disco/prog thread raised a long standing question. what's the difference between prog and art-rock? or are the terms interchangeable?

in the early 70s we called it art-rock: Yes, ELP, King Crimson, even Jethro Tull. maybe Uriah Heep too (art-rock on downs!)of course I sold all these albums by the late 70s.
by the late 80s I started to see the term prog applied to more esoteric/obscure variants of art-rock: Can and the Krauts, Robert Wyatt/Kevin Coyne/Soft Machine and Gong. I wasn't tempted, really.
nowdays I'm way into Can and have recently discovered the early Strawbs and Robert Wyatt's lovely Rock Bottom LP. what have I been missing all these years? gotta search for king crimson threads.
but the question remains: is there an art/rock - prog continuum? What's the connection between Gentle Giant & Can?

not really on topic, but kids in my class today were talking about King Crimson and my professor was all "I WAS THERE THE FIRST TIME. IT'S JUST MARKETING. YOU KNOW THAT, RIGHT?" and we were like, "Yeah, but fuckin' Starless & Bible Black, man..."
