Artists whose music you like but you don't really like them as people

For the most part, I don't really like most of what PJ Harvey says in interviews. She just kinda comes off as a snob to me.

..

Nowell, Friday, 10 September 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Nearly all of them.

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Joni Mitchell. Happy Mondays.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm. Wagner comes to mind...

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, the ones I don't like in 'interviews," with a few notable exceptions, I don't know personally and therefore I couldn't truly judge them as real people. Ryan Adams might be the sweetest guy on earth to have a drink with.

The people I actually know in bands that I like that are assholes are still people I know and I don't see the point of talking bad about them on a message board.

But, if you mean bands whose music I like who have people in the band that I wouldn't piss on if their hearts were on fire, shit, Huk OTfuckingM. I mean, I, like, really DIG "(What's The Story) Morning Glory," ya know?

The Minor Thirds

just kidding!

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Van Halen -- what a bunch of rockstar tools. But those first few albums with DLR --- OOF are they good.

Likewise Kiss of course.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a huge Luke Haines fan but the man is an insufferable, megalomaniacal, misanthropic prick. If that's just his persona, it's still getting to me.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I think "roger adultery" is right.

And what's wrong with calling the interviews with them "interviews"? There's no other way to describe them.

Nowell, Friday, 10 September 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Nearly all of them.
-- Huk-L (handsomishbo...), September 10th, 2004.

OTFM.

Mystikal is a real standout.

madonna annoys the piss out of me every time she opens her mouth, appears on tv, shows up in a movie, poses for a magazine layout or, worst of all, tries to explain herself.

but i love her records (the last couple notwithstanding).

I've become progressively cold on Morrissey over 15 years...he seems to have become bitter, ever more self-absorbed, and has lost a lot of his wit.

Probably all of them except Andrew WK.

The most obvious answer: Michael Jackson. I don't really hate MJ though, I just feel sad for him.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 11 September 2004 05:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"Well, the ones I don't like in 'interviews," with a few notable exceptions, I don't know personally and therefore I couldn't truly judge them as real people."
OTM. journalists truism #1 (non-critics division): you can make ANYONE look like an asshole in print. It's so EZ in fact you can do it w/o even trying.
Even when you've interviewed musicians, you don't really know them. Naturally plenty of 'em DO come across as assholes...did I ever tell the one about performing root-canal surgery on Green Gartside? J Mascis? Lou "Monosyllable" Reed?? The list goes on.

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Saturday, 11 September 2004 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Lou Reed owns this thread because he is actually far worse in person than he comes across in print interviews.

Van Morrison is supposedly one of the meanest drunks of the century.

shookout (shookout), Saturday, 11 September 2004 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't BELIEVE no one has mentioned Thom Yorke or Damon Albarn yet.

why, whats up with Thom? he seemed lovely when i met him.

Will Smith. Chingy. R Kelly. Houston. Lloyd Banks. Ja Rule. DMX. Mario Winans. Usher. Twista. Lil John. Lil Flip. Lil Kim. Lil Wayne. Lil Poppa. Nate Dogg. Snoop Dogg. Lamar. Kevin Lyttle. Spragga Benz. Jin. Nelly. Juvenile...

... Oh geez, sorry, wrong thread! I misread this thread as "Artists who music you hate and would like to see personally char-grilled and fried over a barbeque and thrown to the sharks for starters!"

Silly me!

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 11 September 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Gene Simmons -- who was honeslty my first ever proper "hero" -- is a loathesome, needlessly avaricious human being.

Killing Joke, contrary to popular belief, are actually incredibly nice, generous guys.

I'm a huge Luke Haines fan but the man is an insufferable, megalomaniacal, misanthropic prick

That seems appropiate. I once heard an interview where he came across as a rather affable self-deprecating kind of chap. I couldn't really reconcile that persona with the music and was left rather disappointed and confused.

Ben Dot (1977), Sunday, 12 September 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Could everybody tell us how well they know the person in question, i.e. personally, brief encounter or only read about them. This would help to give the thread some scientific rigour.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 12 September 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't BELIEVE no one has mentioned Thom Yorke
Thom is one of the loveliest, warmest, and most open people that I know.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 13 September 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I once heard an interview where he came across as a rather affable self-deprecating kind of chap.

Luke Haines self-deprecating? I would love to read that interview! I've been enjoying his evil persona, in fact, but I felt that he crossed the line with Das Capital, releasing an LP of unlistenable Muzak versions of his own hits as a joke at the fans' expense.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 13 September 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

why don't we start a thread about artists whose music we like who we ALSO like as people?

I think, in the interest of avaoiding name-dropping, it would be wiser / more tasteful to post anonymously, but I still think it's a good idea. Why is ILM such a half-empty kinda messageboard sometimes??

"I can't BELIEVE no one has mentioned Thom Yorke
Thom is one of the loveliest, warmest, and most open people that I know."

He certainly sounds like it Melissa:

The Thom story:
So I gave him that CD of Tom Waits demos the 2nd night in Lisbon (first city they played). He seemed rather excited about it when I gave it to him, asking how I'd managed to get it and thanking me for it. The next night, I asked him if he listened to them and he said no.

So, the first night in Salamanca (last city they played) was the 3rd time I met him and I asked him if he had listened to the demos again. The following dialogue is almost verbatim:

Me: So, Thom, have you listened to those demos yet?
Thom: No. *signs an autograph for someone else* You ask that so often. It's getting really annoying.
Me: This only the second time I've asked!
Thom: *holds up three fingers* No, third.
Me: No, second. This is only the third time I've met you, and I gave the cd to you the first time.
Thom: Nuh uh. Third time. I win, you lose! Haha. Bye.

And then on the last night in Salamanca, I waited outside the venue afterwards for the band to exit. Thom came out last, and as he passed, I jokingly said "Thom, if I asked you now, it would be the third time. But I'm not going to ask."
And he said, "I wouldn't even be listening if you did."
I responded, "Well, I'm really not going to ask."
His answer was, "Good, because I really wouldn't answer." And I just thought it was a bit nasty, considering I was completely joking and smiling.

And I find the whole thing rather intensely amusing instead of disturbing, which in itself is rather disquieting.

muppetman, Monday, 13 September 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I choose to believe Nina Simone said, and did, some of the things she did in her latter years due to mental problems brought on by alcohol. To believe otherwise would taint some of my favourite music.

Joseph - why Joni Mitchell??

hobart paving (hobart paving), Monday, 13 September 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

GG Allin! Not that I like much of his music apart from the Jabbers stuff and some of the Scumfucs.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 13 September 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Blur to some extents.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 13 September 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Muppetman--Night's a bit fuzzy in my mind. I don't know what happened, really. Either I had so much invested in meeting him for the first time that I took things he said jokingly far too personally, or he was having a bad night. He's been nothing but lovely to me since then, and considering how many times I've met him since, I think I'm qualified to make at least some small statement on his character.

I'd say more, but I don't really think it's my place to be posting this on a public message board.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 13 September 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't care to meet/talk to anybody whose music I like. Just have this fear that the experience would be a letdown and color the way I listen to their music. I interviewed Calvin Johnson once and it just felt weird; he was more lethargic than anticipated but it didn't ruin his work for me. Interviewed Phil Elvrum, Steve Shelly, and Mary Timony via email and the experiences were about what I expected. Sat next to D. Pajo at a show, said "Hey, how's it going?" and he replied "Pretty good!" That's about the extent of my experiences in this arena.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 13 September 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you work for Radiohead Melissa? Was Thom aware of this at the time he was offish with you?

I can't be the only person here who adores Radiohead's music but senses that Thom has the potential to be an awkward uppity egomaniac eg Meeting People Is Easy.

muppetman, Monday, 13 September 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Using Roger's idea of the 'positive spin:'

Really nice people I've met once or twice (some of whose music I don't even like): Neil Hagerty, Windsor For The Derby, most of Anti Pop Consortium, Cannibal Ox, Ray Cappo, Mike Fellows, Lee Ranaldo, Steve Shelley, Kim Gordon, Chan Marshall, Zakk Wylde, Pall Jenkins (really one of the sweetest people in the 'biz), Beck, Aesop Rock, Drive By Truckers, Jim Jarmusch, Scott Ian, Tom Smith, William Hooker, most of The Locust, Rainer Maria

The above were met either through interviews, through friends, or through opening for them and getting drunk / stoned with them afterward. But all were some combination of affable, sweet, and congenial.

In addition, I know a lot more bands / artists on a more personal level, but, being friends with them sorta excludes me from reporting how 'nice' they are - I should hope my friends are nice to me!

Moonie Keith (roger adultery), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

muppetman--I'm just a big fan.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Thom has gone up in my estimation following that CD story.

I love Blur, and thought that Gorillaz stuff was OK but I'm pretty sure I would hate Damon Albarn and I can completely understand why so many people think he's a total c7nt.

Jamie Fake (the pirate king), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

John Lennon certainly wasn't the saint some people make out. In fact, I think he was probably a bit of a tosser.

I'll cop to the fact that I have bus-stop-hummed to some of Sting's pop songs, overlooking of course that Sting himself is an insufferable spoogestain on the trousers of the universe.

This is kinda a deceptively tricky question. For example, I love that Britney Spears exists as a part of popular media, but I have the impression that having a conversation with her wouldn't be very engaging.
