Ian Curtis Luver, Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

did you see them live?

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I am. It's not even close.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I eat other Joy Division fans for breakfast.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

what were you doing in May 1980?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Scott, when you mope around the house gazing blankly into the cold abyss that is your soul, do you REALLY mope around the house gazing blankly into the cold abyss that is your soul?

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

the biggest Joy Division fan should only do that 1/4 of the time.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, that's stupid, never mind

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

it's me bitch

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I am the world's biggest Joy Division fan who is also a card-carrying Juggalo (up in this bitch).

Taxi Dancing in the Soft Prison (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, Dan. Oh yeah. When I was 16 the only dream I had in life was to kill myself with an endless loop of New Dawn Fades playing in the background.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

three t-shirts (one original)

You call that fandom? I have upwards of SEVENTEEN Killing Joke shirts.*

*not really proud of this, by the way.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yes you are, alex. and you should be!

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

god looking at google pic you'd think not a single color photo of Ian Curtis existed.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

the funny thing is that all those photos ARE color.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

god looking at google pic you'd think not a single color photo of Ian Curtis existed.

An amazing point, actually. I can't recall ever having seen one.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

There are color pics! Jeez, and you call yourselves fans.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I like that AKM's lady is the biggest JD fan but I'm not sure she would approve of his language.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I have seen them live eight or nine times. I have many vinyls first edition out of print.

Ian Curtis Luver, Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

if you had seen them live eight or nine times, your name would NOT be IAN CURTIS LUVER

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

cutty with the ZING!

Ian c=====8 (orion), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I CALL BULLSHIT. are there even 4-5 videos???

(clearly, I am the #1 Joy Division fan)

still bevens (bscrubbins), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i have the sandpaper durutti column album with Ian's blood on it from when he cut himself while he was putting it together cuz of the rough texture that is sandpaper.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i have the DVD of 24 party people, i am teh biggest teh fan

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I was the first teenager to ever wear a trenchcoat in Brookfield, Connecticut. (Yes, there is a statue.)

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I had to buy BADLY TRANSCRIBED XEROXED Joy Division lyrics in New York City with money I had earned from my paper route.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i laid ontop of a grave in hayward california staring up at a marble angel while listening to Closer on my walkman while on acid and hallucinated my own funeral to the Eternal while wearing my grey raincoat it is me!

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a CD-R of Substance and I'm hanging myself in the morning

Michael Philip Philip Philip Annoyman (Ferg), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok that one's better.

Michael Philip Philip Philip Annoyman (Ferg), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

ILM is completely in the shitter.

I am such a JD fan that I don't care anymore, mainly because I have lost the will to want more.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice try, Disco. But I'm a waaaaaaaay bigger fan than you.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not the biggest fan, I'm sure, but I'm fairly reasonably obsessed, I'd say.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

And as for Kyle and Michael, the line for the Mission reunion show is on another thread.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I always hated the mission

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I know you did, Kyle! But as the biggest Joy Division fan on earth I sometimes have to be cold and cruel.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

KY-LE...POST AS WAYNE...HUS-SEYYYYYYY

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I was pretty JD obsessed when I was in high school. I don't want to go into it, but I had cassette bootlegs, vinyl, posters, 2 t-shirts, here are the young men, serveral books, and I listened to the live half of still at least once a day for the better part of two years. I also celebrated may 18th. I was obsessed from 15 to about 17/18 when Eno/Bowie/Kraftwerk was my shit, and then came techno...

The first cd I ever bought was Still.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

And at the moment I don't even own any of their music on CD.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

REAL Joy Division fans won't even allow copies of First & Last & Always in their home!

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't have the real albums anymore now that I have the box set, but I think this is a mistake that I should rectify. for some reason we have the crappy Qwest printing of Closer which is very flimsy, all my nice heavy factory issues got sold. So dumb!

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Disco, Kyle, you are both obviously SAD enough to be Joy Division fans but you really need to work on OWNING EVERYTHING THEY EVER MADE!

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

You need to feel the texture of original Factory vinyl in your hands. Caress it. pet it. kiss it. soooooo pretty......

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Pervert

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

unbeliever!

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I BELIEVE IN SCOTT
BUT SCOTT NO LONGER BELIEVES IN ME

Wayne Wanderin' and Wailing in the Wasteland, Wistfully (Ned), Thursday, 16 September 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

oh god, what IS that fool up to these days anyways?

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 16 September 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Ned, who at AMG gets to pick the bands who are in the followers, influenced by, etc columns? I didnt know you wrote those reviews.. I used to use AMG to navigate the seas of music I didnt know shit about back in high school/early college.

still bevens (bscrubbins), Thursday, 16 September 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

oh god, what IS that fool up to these days anyways?

Seek and ye shall find, dude:

http://www.themissionuk.com/

Hey Ned, who at AMG gets to pick the bands who are in the followers, influenced by, etc columns?

Theoretically the review writers, but sometimes we are extremely lazy sacks o' poo. (I am incredibly guilty of this.)

I didnt know you wrote those reviews.. I used to use AMG to navigate the seas of music I didnt know shit about back in high school/early college.

Keen -- then all my efforts over these years are bearing fruit!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 September 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a trucker hat that says "JOY DIVISION" on it. I bought it in Mexico City in 1987.

Ian Curtis Luver, Thursday, 16 September 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

REAL Joy Division fans won't even allow copies of First & Last & Always in their home!

:o

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 16 September 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

True Joy Division fans would never divulge their innermost thoughts about Unknown Pleasures OR the methods behind the making of it to a mass audience. Chris Ott loses! And I win! I would never do such a thing.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I take it back...biggest JD fan = Gibby from makeoutclub.

he's got the factory logo tattoed on the side of his neck and Ian Curtis's face covering his entire forearm.

There's a girl named Jeralyn with the words "she's lost control" tattoed on the back of her neck.

There's a guy on the Factory mailing list by the name Andy Durutti who has the factory logo tattoed on his arm.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 17 September 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Back in 1982 I had two hamsters -- older one named Factory, younger one named Factory Benelux.

Andy K (Andy K), Friday, 17 September 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

How old were you again? (I'm serious.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 September 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

And in 1983 I was in a band called Disierta Membra. We played four shows -- each time we covered Crawling Chaos' The Gas Chair from front to back.

Andy K (Andy K), Friday, 17 September 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned there's this database somewhere that keeps track of that type of thing.

Andy K (Andy K), Friday, 17 September 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahah

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 September 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

*checks* YOU WERE BORN IN 1976, YOU LYING MOTHERFUCKER. How many seven year olds were leading bands covering Crawling Chaos in 1983?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 September 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned in linking to something he didn't write shock.

I kid, Ned, I kid.

How many seven year olds were leading bands covering Crawling Chaos in 1983?

I had a penpal in Zagreb who played bass for a band that did the same exact thing. They ripped us off and I quit writing him.

Andy K (Andy K), Friday, 17 September 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

"I take it back...biggest JD fan = Gibby from makeoutclub."

I can assure you that the world's biggest Joy Division fan would have nothing whatsoever to do with ANYTHING named "makeoutclub". Sorry, nice try though. I'm keeping my crown as the most devoted fan ever in all of history.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 17 September 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

let's all go to makeoutclub.com, click "search profiles" by interest, and enter Joy Division, if you want to see how much JD get's namedropped by todays youth. man, when I was in high school, I had to go to summer camp to find a kid who liked Joy Division.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 17 September 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, the lady with the aforementioned She's Lost Control tattoo is first in the JD search on makeoutclub...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 17 September 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Tattoos? T-shirts? Pfff. In point of actual if empirically unverifiable fact, I am thee Joy Division fan nonpareil. I have so much cred that I need not participate in critical debate re JD, I merely monitor it intermittently from the fastness of Fan HQ here in, uh, Minnesota; and -- get ready -- I don't EVEN have every single one of their recordings! None of which matters, because I'VE GOT THE SPIRIT (in place of condolences, donations can be made via Paypal), to cast it in archetypal JD/fan quasi-mystical (and, not coincidentally, inarguable) terms. BOOYA.

snazz, Saturday, 18 September 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

You've lost the feeling, snazz. don't let the eerie black and white door with the mysterious hand reaching for the knob hit your ass on the way out.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 18 September 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh huh. What year did you start listening to Joy Division, Scott?

snazz, Saturday, 18 September 2004 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned in linking to something he didn't write shock.

MEMEMEME oh wait.

I kid, Ned, I kid.

Now only if you weren't.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 18 September 2004 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

1968, snazz. the year i was cursed to walk this planet alone for eternity.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 18 September 2004 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

1963 here, beeyotch. Case closed.

snazz, Saturday, 18 September 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

You shameless Melmoth, Scott, you Childe Harold of the soul you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 18 September 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank god i'm not the oldest loser talking about Joy Division on the internet. I will take some comfort in that.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 18 September 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you for acknowledging your inferior Joy Division fanhood, Scott. From now on you may call me T.O.L.T.A.J.D.O.T.I. for short.

The (quasi/mock) possessiveness/competitiveness that fanhood can bring out, especially w/r/t music that tends to engage people on the most private, intense levels of emotion, never fails to not amaze me.

snazz, Saturday, 18 September 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I've just been kidding on this thread, snazz. I decided to have a little fun with the idea of the "ultimate fan". It's my art installation for the week. Time to move on though. I'm gonna go cover a bridge in marzipan.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 18 September 2004 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just been kidding on this thread

Well, duh.

Have fun with the bridge. Me, I'm going to listen to "New Dawn Fades" and cry. (NOT REALLY)

snazz, Saturday, 18 September 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

omg. summer camp was where i learned about joy division, new order, depeche mode, the ramones, and er nwa. there was a busy trade in illegal c90s, i tell you.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Saturday, 18 September 2004 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoa, what kind of summer camps did they have where you grew up, Ams? At our camps it was more or less All "Smoke on the Water", All the Time.

Well, there were some exceptions -- the Dead Milkmen, for instance.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 18 September 2004 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

This is the funniest thing I've read on ILM so far and will be excelsiored immediately.

Bimble (bimble), Saturday, 18 September 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to cool weird hippy summer camps with classes/activities like Hip Hop in the Hot Tub. There I met my first punk and new wave friends including Liz who introduced me to all things 4ad as well as the Swans, the Feelies, Butthole Surfers and Big Black. She later started hanging out with the No Neck Blues Band and listening to Santana, but I'll always remember the torn stocking and Death to the Pixies T-shirt.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 18 September 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I've actually got a copy of House Of Dolls around here somewhere...

Edward Bax, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I have demos of all the Joy Division songs on reel to reel.

Ian Curtis Lurver, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...
I am boycotting this thread:

Assail the Unassailable!! >Joy Divison

I feel it is in very bad taste and you should all be ashamed of yourselves. You heathens wouldn't know good music if it hit you in the knee with Pippi's monkey.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 26 February 2005 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I just made myself laugh by laughing at myself:

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 26 February 2005 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

How much better is the vinyl of Unknown Pleasures than the CD?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 26 February 2005 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Wouldn't know. Never had the CD. Never bought Closer on CD either. There were just a few records in my whole life that I was determined never to buy on CD and they were two of the 4 or 5.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Sunday, 27 February 2005 08:18 (twenty-one years ago)

How much better is the vinyl of Unknown Pleasures than the CD?

Incalculably better.

I bought a 16mm reel of their first performance at a flea market in Manchester.

Ian Curtis Luver, Friday, 29 July 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)
