and it's free. and it's at the new Pritzker Pavillion (ie. the Frank Gehry bandshell). will this be worth seeing? i haven't seen them in years, but they were dull as fug last time i did. it was them and dub narcotic sound system and the latter was awesome.

When is this? The Pritzker Pavilion is worth seeing by itself, though I guess you could do that any time.

The new crazy Reader sez Monday night at 6:30. Hmmm, not sure I can make it, although I'd love to.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 17 September 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoa!

"...and at this show Tortoise will be joined by locals Josh Berman on cornet, Geoff Bradifeld on tenor sax and bass clarinet, Greg Ward on alto sax and clarinet, and Jeb Bishop on trombone."

!!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 17 September 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i've been down there on lunch and heard the grant park orchestra practising. the speaker systems they came up with is impressive as hell. i guess i'll go. it's free, after all. i can always leave if the yawns set in.

frankE (frankE), Friday, 17 September 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Eh, I probably won't bother. I've never been a big Tortoise fan and my damn parents will still be in town. But maybe that's the kind of cultural event they would enjoy? Hmm...

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 17 September 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a new crazy reader?

amateur!!st, Friday, 17 September 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah! It's all in color now and the design is totally different!

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 17 September 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

It's crazy!

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 17 September 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

and new, or so they tell me

amateur!!st, Friday, 17 September 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

It's totally crazy. I can't get over it.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 17 September 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

It's like Metromix designed it or something.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 17 September 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

the balkan folk show on tuesday at the cultural center looks interesting.

frankE (frankE), Friday, 17 September 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

It seems because of the massive Tortoise backlash that I should be ashamed to say this, but I liked Tortoise alot the last time through, earlier this year. I was thankful cuz they were godawful the time prior to that at the DetroitEMF (actually the sound was so embarassingly bad that I couldn't tell if they were).

But I guess yous guys got alot to do out there in Chicago.

peepee (peepee), Friday, 17 September 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

The only Tortoise that I can get excited about, or that I can actually remember, is the first song on "Standards." That song is pretty cool.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 17 September 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Greg Ward is an awesome player, one of the brightest young improvising lights in the city. I might have to check this out.

Reed Moore (diamond), Friday, 17 September 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

when is it?

amateur!!st, Friday, 17 September 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

That song is pretty cool.

Heh, you like it because they bring the RAWK.

I really liked Tortoise the last time I saw them, too -- maybe last November or December? It was at the Abbey Pub.

I saw them at DEMF in '01, as well, and the sound wasn't great, but I was standing very far away from the stage, so it didn't bother me too much.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 17 September 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Am: look up.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 17 September 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Their Memphis show in May was really good, in a tiny little club venue. They closed the main set with that first song from Standards. McEntire is all tattooed up now (maybe he was back in the day, I don't recall) and Travis-Bickle-intense, locking gazes with audients and having little staring contests. Not in a threatening way, more in an "are you paying attention?" way.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Friday, 17 September 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

McEntire is a treat to watch drum, serious.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 17 September 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

JOHN MCENTIRE YOU ARE A TREAT

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 17 September 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved their stage setup, two drum sets (facing each other) as the front line.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Friday, 17 September 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

but why is this on a MONDAY?!?!

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Friday, 17 September 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

shouldn't the question be why are they a part of the world music festival? i mean, sure they backed up tom ze, as margasak noted, but i don't hear much 'world' in their music. viva chicago, no. jazz fest maybe. celtic fest, no. polonia day parade or whatever it's called, mmmmm, maybe.

frankE (frankE), Friday, 17 September 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Chicago is part of the world.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 17 September 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, that was pretty fun. Anyone else make it? The sound was quite crisp all around. Better crowd than I had expected. I also really dug the opener. Bummer I had to leave early... Plus, Millenium Park security needs to fucking relax a little bit.

frankE (frankE), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

oh i forgot about this. i was in millenium park this afternoon too

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i went frankE. i thought the band was very tight and the aforementioned drumming is definitely a must-see - both herndon and mcentire looked super intense. the last song before the encore was beautiful. must pick up the new album...

tricky disco (disco stu), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

it was the first time i saw them play too after being a fan since millions... somehow i had always mananged to miss them.

millenium park needs some minimal techno events! every time i go there i try to think of the music that would best coalesce with the gehry and the aon center behind it.

tricky disco (disco stu), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

McEntire is all tattooed up now (maybe he was back in the day, I don't recall) and Travis-Bickle-intense, locking gazes with audients and having little staring contests.

yeah he's had the tats and the 1000 yard stare for a while now.
