What if Elvis had...

What if Elvis had lived into old age like Johnny Cash?
Imagine that the King had not succumbed to sleeping bills, steak and fried banana sandwiches. Could he have reinvented himself in the same way as Cash -- a singer of interesting covers?
Or, was the cult of Elvis too big; and, therefore, his personality and fame would not have allowed a change in image. What would have been next for Elvis?
Would he have done a retur-to-roots album in the same sense as Aerosmith's Honkin' on Bobo. Or was death and ascension the only possibility?

YES!

He looks like my old neighbour, Mr Hatton, who used to grow tomatoes and try to stick his hand down the back of your knickers when you were plucking the lower ones of the vines.

It's really hard to imagine Elvis escaping the downward spiral that he was caught up in.

I think that if he had survived the overdose, he would've given away all of his worldly belongings and fired the Memphis Mafia.

Then he would've become a Scientologist and got Priscilla back.

Priscilla Presley's performance in Naked Gun 3 is one of the great works of art in modern cinema.

Damn, that should have been the thread title.

I reckon he would just disappear from the business, ala Beefheart or Cat Stevens, find religion, and basically become Mr Hatton as Penelope describes above.

he'd be duetting with morrissey.

and maybe he'd have a daytime tv talk show.

(but as for become "a singer of interesting covers," as johnny cash was alleged to be, elvis WAS a singer of interesting covers. that's what he did.)

If Elvis had lived, he would have chaired the NRA, gone into politics, or written children's stories.

I'm with the politics notion.

I'm with the "dead in '78 if he'd survived '77" notion.

FIND religion OTM

i mean al green found religion after fallin off a stage..
and elvis had already went back to the gospel sounds during the seventies

my only worry is that he wouldnt be able to ditch the memphis mob and his christian rebirth plus a showbiz lifestyle would make him a T.V. evanglalist.

gets caught with 16 hooker
goes to jail
has to hire the skinheads to protect from the blacks who feel he stole everything he knew from big joe turner.
gets out around 95
threatnens to kill micheal jackson for kissing his daughter

2 years later, Elvis makes amends with MJ, they collaborate on an album of songs written by Paul McCartney and Jeff Lynne put to a garage beat. They call their duo 'The Kings.' Shockingly, the album is a failure, except for in Germany, where it breaks records.

And then Paul Oakenfold makes a remix album, which is much more lucrable.

What's a good rhymne for "lucrable"?

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 06:38 (twenty-one years ago)

the notion of an alive and enlightened Elvis just goes against what the man was and what we all love him for. i mean i would've liked to have seen him record with jerry ragovoy or thom bell or any number of people, but today he'd be just like elvis costello, in fact he'd be letting elvis costello write songs for him for the hipster market. the only thing i would've really liked would have been to elvis to redo his classic movie songs like "clambake" and "speedway" and "hey, hey, hey" and so forth, because i actually think that's some of his best and most representative work.
