Maybe good is the wrong word, but I am really enjoying Utada Hikarus American debut on Island, Exodus. Any artists, preferably songs, that anyone can recommend?

i adore Shinohara Tomoe ... the ones i can remember off the top are Loop People, Rainbow Ra Ra Ruu, and Kurukuru Mirakuru. i think there are past threads on this though.

not sure how complete an overview this is, but it's helpful: http://www.sempai.org/~mwduncan/jpopartist_ab.shtml

must admit most mainstream j-pop still leaves me cold, as does most mainstream music period. I reinvestigated when I discovered SR, thinking maybe more of the japanese underground scene may have infiltrated the charts, but she seems like an anomaly.

She is pretty anomalous I think. Though artists like Aco or UA are touted as 'interesting' as well.

I doubt Exodus is really going to dent the US R&B/pop crowd. I like some Utada but this just seems uncomfortable and declawed. Timbaland and the Mars Volta drummer show up but only really to blend into inoffensive eclecticism. Rhyming 'easy breezy' with 'japaneesy' also makes me wish I could ignore english. I wanted to like it!

Yeah that's kind of what I said on my blog as well

No way it's going to dent the charts here. Especially not with Easy Breezy, which is one of the more embarassing songs i've heard in quite some time. Oddly enough, the rest of the album is considerably better.

Whoever was in charge of getting her signed at Island should get fired. Worst signing ever for the American market.

stomp (+dancefloor), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, anyone know what the current state of the Japanese house scene is? Or if they even have one?

stomp (+dancefloor), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Ayumi Hamasaki is the most attractive person i've ever seen.

stomp (+dancefloor), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i liked her better before the fashion brigade got to her.

ryan kuo (ryan kuo), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

That Techno Pop Academy website up there is one of the best, along with http://www.artcontext.com/music/artskool/jem/

My favorite in the genre is Japanese synth/techno-pop from the '80s, which is what those sites focus on most. Some of my favorites are:

Ippu-Do/Masami Tsuchiya
Moon Riders
Akiko Yano
YMO
Chakra
P-Model
Yukihiro Takahashi
Halmens
Melon
Salon Music
Sandii and the Sunsetz
Sheena and the Rockets
Portable Music
Zelda
Jun Togawa

Not as fluffy as actual J-Pop, but I enjoy Love Psychedelico a lot.

chrisco (chrisco), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ayumi Hamasaki is the most attractive person i've ever seen"

huh... she kinda looks like an alien. but different strokes.

supercub, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Supercar - "High Vision" is probably a good album to start with. Standout tracks: "Storywriter", "Yumegiwa Last Boy", "Strobolights".

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)
