NO ONE EVER SAID IT WAS OVER: SON VOLT REFORMS AND RETURNS TO STUDIO

Midwest-based Son Volt, with songwriter Jay Farrar at the helm, will begin recording their fourth full length album at the end of September. Following a five-year hiatus, with the exception of the April 2004 recording of “Sometimes” for the Alejandro Escovedo tribute album, multi-instrumentalist Dave Boquist, bassist Jim Boquist and drummer Mike Heidorn will reconvene at Farrar’s St. Louis studio. Speaking about the “Sometimes” session, Farrar says: "It felt like we hit the ground running when we recorded Al's song for Por Vida. Five years seemed like five days at that point. It proved that more recording and performing as Son Volt is something that should happen."

As this revered band reconnects, a unique glimpse inside the Son Volt sessions will be offered. Beginning October 1, a webcamera will be placed in the studio to capture a day of pre-production and 16 days of recording. The webcamera can be accessed at www.jayfarrar.net/webcam and will feature streaming photos that refresh every 5 seconds.

Farrar formed Son Volt in 1994 after the dissolution of Uncle Tupelo. With the release of Trace, Straightaways and Wide Swing Tremolo, the band was met with praise by the public and critics alike. From the plain-spoken chorus of “Windfall” to the gritty guitars of “Straightface”, Son Volt has always pushed the boundaries to blend traditional American music forms with poetic imagery and straight-ahead rock.

Son Volt is not currently affiliated with a label and plans to return to the road in early 2005.

The version of "Sometimes" on that Alejandro trib is a real pleasure. Webcam in the studio, probably not so much.

Still, I'm glad to hear Jay is back with the band. Mike Heidorn is fab drummer.

Roy Kasten, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

That's great news. I look forward to hearing this. I've often complained about the fact that Jay Farrar writes a really good song, but seems to play it over and over again. However, I've enjoyed what he's done solo in the last few years, and he even put on a good show last time I saw him.

Beyond that, that's going to be the most boring webcam in the history of the internet.

I met Jim Boquist because he was bartending at this bar in St. Paul me and my friend were drinking at....we were just chatting and he said something about this "band" he used to be in and I asked him what band and he said "Oh, it was just this band called Son Volt, you've probably never heard of it"....nice guy.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

he didn't say "I'm Jim Boquist, beeytach! Fuck M@att He1geson"? Who'd a thunk it.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

i usually hate this sort of stuff but son volt were the business.

Cripps Pink (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

jbr? is that you?

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

yes sir.

Cripps Pink (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 23 September 2004 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought so...it's just, as you admit, "son volt were the business" is a pretty atypical statement.

Jay Farrar's stuff never connection with me emotionally, I have to admit. I'm a Wilco man.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 23 September 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

never made a connection

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 23 September 2004 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

xgau's review kinda says it all.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 23 September 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

my love for son volt is well-documented... but admittedly it's all 'bout the '80s r.e.m. and the cranky crazy horse guitar. the lyrics are shit.

Cripps Pink (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 23 September 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

ok as a fan of REM since elementary school (Green first CD I ever bought) and of Crazy Horse since middle school I am so confused right now.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 23 September 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

though I love Uncle Tupelo's "Effigy" cover so I get that CH part a lil' bit.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 23 September 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

remember the '80s r.e.m. that gave us "flowers of guatemala" and "what if we give it away"? that '80s r.e.m.

Cripps Pink (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 23 September 2004 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

ok yeah if I plug out Jay's voice I get what you're saying now.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 23 September 2004 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

jay's voice always mucks it up. if he sounded like tweedy, he'd have to write some decent lyrics.

drew, Thursday, 23 September 2004 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Wilco to death, but there's something comforting about the fact that I'll never have to hear Jay Farrar sing something along the lines of "I am an American aquarium drinker..."

Though he could sing the classifieds, and it sound alright.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 23 September 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

haha i'd actually love to hear that. the most unintentionally amusing track ever.

drew, Thursday, 23 September 2004 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i have never agreed with xgau, and after reading that hackagraph, i don't think i ever need to. give me back 20 secs. of my life, anthony miccio, genuflector of all things VV.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 23 September 2004 05:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't even have to click that link. I know the review. Along with the Since I Left You, Discovery, Second Toughest in the Infants, etc etc, it just reinforces my position. Hackagraph....good term for that.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 23 September 2004 05:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"the reviews of Since I left..." etc

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 23 September 2004 05:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i have never agreed with xgau,

but you must like al green!!

i too like son volt; i was sad when they dropped off the radar (were they ever really on the radar?)

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Thursday, 23 September 2004 05:55 (twenty-one years ago)

After their first album and Wilco's first, Farrar was regarded as more on the radar than Tweeeedy I bet.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 23 September 2004 05:57 (twenty-one years ago)

that's true... been such a long time....

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Thursday, 23 September 2004 05:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i've only heard trace and sebastapol and both are plenty fine, even as an alt-country-friendly fan, i rated sebastapol over YHF, and certainly not in a "SHOCKAH"/contrarian/ILM-cliche manner either.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 23 September 2004 06:07 (twenty-one years ago)

sometimes it seems like every xgau review, even the positive ones, boils down to three words: "Fuck you, music."

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 23 September 2004 06:10 (twenty-one years ago)

anthony miccio, genuflector of all things VV.

hahahahahahahaha

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

he didn't say "I'm Jim Boquist, beeytach! Fuck M@att He1geson"? Who'd a thunk it

I know what you're saying, but I've met people in totally unknown local bands that act like they're fucking David Bowie.....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 23 September 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

....or I should say they "act like they're David fucking Bowie" not "fucking David Bowie" cuz that would be gross....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 23 September 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

xgau rates terroir blues a bomb (to be burnt or something, i guess). one of the best albums of last year. fortunately he didn't write anything on it. no waste of time there.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Thursday, 23 September 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i guess christgau brings this on himself by classifying things as "bombs" etc. without really discussing them.

amateur!!st, Thursday, 23 September 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

but suffice to say i don't think the blanket criticisms of him are really accurate.

amateur!!st, Thursday, 23 September 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
Trace is a way better album than I thought it was when it first came out

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Sunday, 12 March 2006 22:36 (twenty years ago)

Trace was fantastic even back then. Listening to it versus Wilco's perma-underwhelming A.M. debut, I surely thought that Farrar had snagged the post-Tupelo crown for all time. How wrong was I...

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Monday, 13 March 2006 03:32 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

I just heard a Son Volt song I'd never heard - in Home Depot of all places - and it really struck me! Gave up on this band after most people already had, but I guess this tune - "The Picture" - is from 2007's The Search - anyone heard this album? Is it all good like this and full of horns and stuff?

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 22:27 (fifteen years ago)

i haven't heard that record, i don't think. the first "Son Volt" reunion record was pretty dreary for the most part. too bad the reunion discussed at the top of this thread never really happened!

tylerw, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 22:34 (fifteen years ago)

i was a huuuuuge uncle tupelo fan but honestly son volt was always one of the most boring live bands.

who's got the (platform) 9 3/4ths? (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 22:36 (fifteen years ago)

they were cool the first time i saw them (circa 1995), but every other time after that, yeah, pretty dull. always wished that farrar would loosen up a little and just kinda jam, but he doesn't seem into it.

tylerw, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 22:38 (fifteen years ago)

I've heard it, I think that was one of the three tunes worth hearing. The rest were pretty boring, from what I recall. I think their most recent, American Central Dust, is more worthy of a listen but still not a patch on the first two records.

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 22:40 (fifteen years ago)

does mike heidorn play at all anymore? he was a pretty cool drummer.

tylerw, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 22:42 (fifteen years ago)

for me this band is like that girl you were into & she was your life & then she dumped you & then you were really despondent & then years passed & you realized your life was better for having lost her.

I still love the way she brushed her hair from her forehead the first side of Trace though.

guess farrar has a memoir coming out? or something. does not sound too exciting.

In this collection of beautifully crafted autobiographical vignettes that encompasses everything from the people Jay Farrar has met and the places he’s journeyed over 20 years as a traveling musician, to his formative childhood experiences, to his parents’ cultural identity as Missouri Ozarks.

As a child, he marveled at the eccentric habits and mannerisms of his father, though it has taken over 40 years to fully appreciate his guidance. Recollections of Farrar’s father are prominent throughout the stories. Ultimately, it is music and musicians that are given the most space and the final word since music has been the creative impetus and driving force for the past 35 years of his life.

In writing these stories, he found a natural inclination to focus on very specific experiences; a method analogous to the songwriting process. The highlights and pivotal experiences from that musical journey are all represented as the binding thread in these stories—if life is a movie, then these stories are the still frames.

nothing like a middling, slightly condescending pfork review to get me to check out the new son volt record. first song sounds pretty nice!

gonna take a lot more than that to get me to check out a Son Volt record in 2013. nude photos of Jay in the gatefold?

i dunno, this is sounding solid... so far no real attempts to "rock," which I think is a good idea.

tylerw, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 14:49 (thirteen years ago)

ooh mid tempo songs!

Euler, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 14:50 (thirteen years ago)

I really only love Jay when he rocks, like in 2013 I'll take "Route" over "Windfall"

Euler, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 14:50 (thirteen years ago)

haha! how about this lyric: "There's a world of wisdom inside a fiddle tune"

tylerw, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 14:51 (thirteen years ago)

wow.

I want more """"""dance"""""" jams like "Blind Hope" too

I think I just listened to about half of this, can't really remember already

Euler, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 15:34 (thirteen years ago)

lol, here's an excerpt from that memoir

The first time I left [Uncle Tupelo] was when the bass player woke up my girlfriend, who was sleeping on the back equipment van bench, to profess his love for her when I was responsible for driving up front. The reason for leaving the band the aforementioned second time was for artistic and band direction differences of opinion. I spoke the words, “I have the desire to be your friend. It’s just not possible in the context of this band.” The bass player responded with belligerent vitriol. I walked away… [Later] The bass player and I then shook hands. I said “Good luck,” as the bass player said nothing in response.

“I have the desire to be your friend" is pretty epic though

Euler, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 18:45 (thirteen years ago)

I'm sorry, but this isn't Son Volt, it's just the Jay Farrar Experience.

Anyone know what the Boquists are up to these days?

Your Favorite Album in the Cutout Bin, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 20:55 (thirteen years ago)

Very few songs put me into the mind set of a such specific time & place the way that "Drown" by Son Volt does & I hold it forever in my heart but, I probably walked out of one Son Volt M@tt mentioned.

So I doubt I'll listen to this new record but I will say that is an excellent album cover.
