I will be visiting Chicago this weekeend. I have about 6 hours and have already determined that Dusty Groove and Reckless on Milwaukee will be two of my destinations. Is Evil Clown worth checking out, and if it is, can I get to it via CTA?

Thanks for indulging me.

RECORD STORES IN CHICAGO

evil clown is about six blocks from the belmont el stop, on halsted. it's not really worth making a special trip for. although there is another reckless nearby (on broadway just south of belmont). if you have a weekend in chicago i wouldn't spent it going record shopping.

evil clown is well-stocked, but overpriced and cd-only. if you're going to go to evil clown, i'd suggest the reckless on broadway instead. you can get to ec by the cta for sure. (halsted bus, but it really depends on where you are coming from)

xpost, i agree with amateur!st

i wouldn't go that far out of my way for it if i only had 6 hours in this city. it's a fine store, but nothing that will blow the shit out of your ass.

personally, if i were visiting, i'd recommend going from reckless to dusty groove to millenium park, which are all accessible from the blue line if you are coming in by plane.

dusty groove has its own airport now, actually

Actually, I am fortunate to get to Chicago two or three times a year and have see a great deal of the city, but I've never gone music shopping. So this is the trip for that. thanks for the suggestions.

I miss Chicago :(

you can also make an easy trip up (or down) the lincoln avenue corridor and hit four shops in less than two miles: south to north they are hardboiled on roscoe in roscoe village; the record emporium (terrific for used stuff) just steps from the lincoln/roscoe intersection; deadwax (best for used vinyl) on lincoln at grace; and laurie's planet of sound on lincoln near wilson. and from there you can hop on the brown line (western stop) to head back downtown.

i like the guy who runs hard boiled but in all honesty it's no great shakes as a record store. likewise laurie's planet of sound is pretty dull. i'd stick with gramaphone (if that sort of music's your bag), reckless, and dusty groove.

He'll order anything for you and sells everything fairly cheap.

I kinda like Evil Clown. It's not big but it's easy to find what you want in there and I usually end up leaving with a purchase, unlike Reckless, which can be baffling and intimidating if you're not in the mood for it. Not saying EC is better than Reckless, it's just easier if you're looking for something specific.
I pretty much only go to Hardboiled if I'm in that area anyways.

Dude, JAZZ RECORD MART on Wabash. Largest jazz store in the world.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 23 September 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

you can search reckless's inventory online--www.reckless.com--before making purchases

JRM is kind of overpriced and has no used stuff.

I just remember when I asked the dude at Reckless if they had this TV Personalities album, and he said, oh yeah, it should be over there in the T's somewhere, and I had to spend like 15 minutes flipping through 8,000 cd covers trying to find it before giving up.

True, I dread going there because of the money I'll spend. BUT, it's so nice knowing that they'll have every obscure jazz record I've been reading about or looking for. Also, they're cool, knowledgeable guys and they have great shows there in the middle of the day.
