Talent Explosion (Talent Explosion), Friday, 24 September 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Fat Boab Smith ownS this, despite the fact I'm starting to get over my 80's Cure hatred, it's still not pretty: makes me think of taking a big gulp of coffee you realise too late has gone stone cold. UGH, UGH, UGH!

Soukesian, Friday, 24 September 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I was gonna say Merritt too, but he's trying to be dreary, isn't he? or maybe he's just trying to sound weary.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 24 September 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Trying or not, the dude sounds like he could use a cup of coffee and a hug.

Talent Explosion (Talent Explosion), Friday, 24 September 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

The great dreary/dreamy divide is bridged by Mark K. of Red House Painters.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 24 September 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, I just realized that KYLE must really like dreariness!

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 24 September 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The great dreary/dreamy divide is bridged by Mark K... -- having read this far I became suddenly afeared, VERY afeared, that after the K there'd come ...nopfler!!

Lloyd Banks. Turntablelab brilliantly put it thus:"dude's flow is beige.

Might as well call it khaki, it's so beige. Banks is basically 50 Cent without the enthusiasm or the weird vocal inflections.

Chris O., Saturday, 25 September 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

M. Gira owns this thread.

Thank you Maria B. Gira Gira Gira. And I mean it as a compliment.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 26 September 2004 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoever that guy is who sang for the Crash Test Dummies. He's like Gira without a sense of fun.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Sunday, 26 September 2004 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't find Gira's voice dreary. I guess he can do dreary, but when he's bellowing something like "let the light come in, damn you to hell" he sounds more like Robert Mitchum in Night Of The Hunter.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 26 September 2004 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Genesis P-Orridge - but I mean it as a compliment

Soukesian is completely OTM upthread with Fat Bob. He gets away with it in the Cure trilogy (Seventeen Seconds, Faith, Pornography) and their later anologues (Disintegration, Bloodflowers) but on the pop material... I want to stick pens in my ears at times. And I quite like the Cure.

the guy from tragically hip.
HOLY JESUS FUCK.
it's like only the very worst aspects of michael stipe's voice with a slight edge of jello biafra, plus he does this quasi-morrisey thing that just makes it unbearably fucking miserable. ack.

Brett Sparks from the Handsome Family is just brimming with woe.

rebecca s (rebecca S), Sunday, 10 October 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

sam elliot, hamilton leithauser, ben stein, beth gibbons, tom waits, jonathon richman, jeff tweedy, nico, bill callahan, and kris kristofferson are examples of good dreary. morrissey, stephen merritt, adam duritz, and joe lieberman are some examples of bad dreary.

j.m. lockery (j.m. lockery), Sunday, 10 October 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I think anyone who does that multisyllabic melisma thing on a slick urban R&B record is drearier than just about all the singers mentioned here. The more syllables and notes you pack into the word 'I' or the word 'love', the more dismally soulless you actually are.

Momus (Momus), Sunday, 10 October 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

James Freakin Taylor

David Kitt, an Irish singer-songwriter who would bore you into a coma with his monotonous, droney voice.
