do you write down your dreams?

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Monday, 27 September 2004 07:37 (twenty-one years ago)

or do you dream c*lum's dreams? ;)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 27 September 2004 07:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm glad you two spoke up. I was biting my tongue. Anyone here read Gira's book The Consumer? Nah, probably not. Extremely warped and perverted. Honestly I just can't imagine him and Madonna even getting along. Ken I'm sure you mean well, but...you certainly have the burden of proof on this one.

Bimble (bimble), Monday, 27 September 2004 08:00 (twenty-one years ago)

actually whether cal*m knows who gira is or not bears no relation to much though

CY: This Madonna thing. I read someplace, don't ask me where, but some people were arguing that you don't really like Madonna, and it's all a big joke on your part, on your fans, like a big prank.

KIM: No, we like her.

THURSTON: No, we like her a lot. We just like that one song.

KIM: I think she's becoming a bit driven, though...

THURSTON: ...no, it's like, she the kind of person who insinuates being real populist, and at the same time a like Lower East Side loft kind of mentality or something. It's too obvious, now. I mean, we never wanted to try to exploit that we like Mandonna, it just sorta happened. We did that song . . .

CY: Did you ever get in trouble for that? Legal trouble at all?

THURSTON: Supposedly she heard it, and said it's OK, she just won't tell her management. And she's like, she used to live in New York, she went out with a friend of ours for a while, and I won't tell you who, because you know who it is. And she was in this band called "Spinal...", this weird Gang-of-Four-ish new wave band, with these kids who were in Deep Six, Circus Mort, who turned into the Swans. I mean, there's a weird connection there; so she is actually
part of the Swans thing.

S: Madonna is part of the whole Swans trip? This has the makings of a real underground Weekly World News story. . .

THURSTON: Weekly Weird News.

S: A real news flash: Madonna went out with Michael Gira, we have pictures.

THURSTON: Why Michael Gira?

S: Well, I don't know, you said she was hanging out with the Swans, I mean...

THURSTON: Well, you can't say Michael Gira, 'cause he'd be offended. Michael Gira would be very offended.

KIM: Yeah, he's a very private person.

THURSTON: Well, when she used to play around, we used to always hate her, 'cause she's such a jerk. She used to like... well, there's this guy she used to go out with we know, she used to sit on his lap, the whole time like looking around...

I don't know what to do but laugh my ass off at this point.

And damnit I've been meaning to pull out that Ciccone Youth tape for 7 billion years. There's something on there I really liked and I never went back to it. ARgh.

Bimble (bimble), Monday, 27 September 2004 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

the two white chicks listening to neu track?

gaz (gaz), Monday, 27 September 2004 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone remember that interview with Thurston where he was talking about a girl who used to give people what he referred to as "blumpies"?

NickB (NickB), Monday, 27 September 2004 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, Snazz... we're definitely getting closer!

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Monday, 27 September 2004 08:32 (twenty-one years ago)

NickB: I imagine this is the same act that we refer to as "blumpkins"

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Monday, 27 September 2004 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm, it's tempting to Google to check, but on the otherhand... arrggh!

NickB (NickB), Monday, 27 September 2004 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

haha

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Monday, 27 September 2004 08:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"Smashing Blumpkins"

NickB (NickB), Monday, 27 September 2004 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

well, i've never had one but i bet that they are indeed smashing

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Monday, 27 September 2004 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually wouldn't be surprised if they'd dated, given Madonna's tenure in the Mudd Club/Danceteria scene.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 27 September 2004 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

It all depends on how you define the word "date."

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Monday, 27 September 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The Gira/Madonna thing comes up again in the Thurston interview in the new issue of SPIN.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 27 September 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

More Sonic Youth news flashes:
Thurston admits not liking disco!!!
Kim admits to dissuading daughter from listening to pop music because the singers don't write their own material!!!
HOLY SHIT!!!

Loose Translation: Sexy Dancer (sexyDancer), Monday, 27 September 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually I think I read an interview where Kim said she doesn't push music on Coco. Also, she said that Thurston is the only person bringing new music into the house!

Free the Bee (ex machina), Monday, 27 September 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

They did know each other personally; I have a very reliable witness to that. Also, not to corroborate this but as a random factoid, "Celebrity Lifestyle" is directly about Madonna.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 27 September 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, I knew this way back when and I was a white kid from the suburbs!

Free the Bee (ex machina), Monday, 27 September 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you, Matthew! It was in Spin that I read it! I can finally sleep now...

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Monday, 27 September 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think Madonna could be the blumpkin lady, cause isn't she famously on-record as not doing oral? And isn't that a key ingredient of said act?

And people still read Spin?

Formerly Lee G (Formerly Lee G), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

on motherfucking plane rides they do

Loose Translation: Sexy Dancer (sexyDancer), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh.

Formerly Lee G (Formerly Lee G), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously, if you can get Spin for $1/year, it's not a bad read when receiving a blumpkin

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

isn't she famously on-record as not doing oral?

Are you thinking of Dennis Rodman? Apropos of an invitation from Madonna?

DJ Mencap0))), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

ten years pass...

an ex-swan who posts to the manhattan before 1990 fb group posted on an old pic of madonna that "she was dating the lead singer of my band when this photo was taken."

was she sitting on his lap?

flopson, Saturday, 17 January 2015 06:38 (eleven years ago)

Funny I just came across the Gira/Madonna story somewhere recently too. Can't think where though. Thought it was a direct reference to him shagging her in a certain location which I also don't remember.
Otherwise I might think it could have been a Spin I still had at my mother's place or other interview from mid 80s. Bob Stanley doesn't refer to it does he? Think that's about the only recent thing I'm reading that might touch on either NY Noise or Madonna.

I am positive that I read an interview with Thurston/Kim where they goes into this, they mention Gira saying "you won't believe how beautiful this girl is" or some such

actually looked through some old zines last night, but no dice.
