Yeah, I guess 70s hair metal bands alone would keep us going for a month.

I read this as Albums Covers That Display Dated Political Correctness, which would be much more interesting...

The 70s is probably the best decade for that as well.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

not quite sure what's "dated" about the political incorrectness of any of these. are we suggesting that blackface was considered fine and dandy in the '70s, or that no one raised an eyebrow at that foreigner cover when it actually came out?

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

That Foreigner one is so twisted in so many ways. I'm still going "WTF?"

xpost: Yeah, I was wondering that too. You'd think that by the 70s and 80s, things would have kind of progressed a bit already.

Then, I guess they still haven't now, going by lots of lyrics and videos today.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Point taken.

(This stuff vs "Eat You Alive" or "Drips". I wonder how the 00s will look in 30 years.)

I don't really get the problem with the Foreigner one so much.. She's wiping something off of the stall -presumably something about herself. Somewhat P.I., but doesn't seem that bad to me...

I forget the band --- some cheezewhiz 80's metal outfit -- but this was their original cover (shot by photog Scarpati) -- it was later re-released without the young lady reclining in the penetration seat.

Very Smell the Glove, eh?

Ah, here it is....Slave to the Thrill by Hurricane.

I can't imagine that the reasons behind this cover (considering the source) were especially charitable.

dave225, at face value maybe it's not so bad, compared to the Ted Nugent or Hurricane original (or Doggystyle, say). It's what it seems to possibly imply that makes it more creepy - the way she seems to have turned around suddenly (judging from the way she's lost her balance) with a scared look in her eyes. + the question of why she's in the men's washroom to begin with. (She doesn't seem to have expected to find her # number and wipe it off, since she's using toilet paper.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it possible to have a thread like this without the Scorpions making an appearance?

Jedermann sein eigener Fussball (Dada), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

(It doesn't necessarily mean that anything is automatically but it's the way it just leaves unanswered questions hanging that made me call it "twisted". These others are just straightforwardly dumb/misogynist.)

Whose album cover is the one with the clearyl underage naked girl (not Blind Faith - maybe it's the above-referenced Scorpions)?... it has popped up on a few different cover threads and it always makes me terribly nervous.

Taxi Dancing in the Soft Prison (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Scorpions - "Virgin Killer"

Jedermann sein eigener Fussball (Dada), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

By "Dated Political Incorrectness" I'm thinking more of records that weren't meant to be offensive at the time, but in retrospect they are. Covers that were meant to be shocking area dime-a-dozen.

Sexy, sexy -vs- sexist:
http://www.317x.com/albums/m/hugomontenegro5/reduced.gif

This one was never meant to be offensive, but a bit of a laugh:

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

See, that was just as offensive back in '87 as it is today. Am I right in saying that we're looking for album covers featuring white missionaries sitting in boiling cauldrons as the restless hungry natives look on?

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Even though the actual song was ahead of its time as a sort of anti-smoking tune....

http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drc900/c911/c91179ec952.jpg

it's an album cover and it's politically incorrect in a dated way. there's little question he was a major, important musical figure, and the album is pretty great in its way. read nick tosches for a defense of minstrelsy in general, and any number of other critics for an appreciation of emmett in particular. but if you want "dated political incorrectness" on an album cover, i believe you're looking at it right here.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe not politically incorrect, but I think that the record company would think twice about releasing this today:

Nemo (JND), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't get the last two... Is it politically incorrect for men to hug each other? And exotica as the whole genre could of course be considered politically incorrect (though you'd have to be somewhat oversensitive to do so), but the cover Nemo posted is still pretty mild.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno, the guy at the front of that scooter looks like he's losing his innocence. Like, right then.

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Three men with uncomfortable facial expressions riding the same moped = Hugging?

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, I'll give you that the guy on the far left doesn't seem that uncomfortable.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

How about Bill Dana as "Jose Jiminez," the Mexican Astronaut?

Also, the single for the Cowsills' "Indian Lake" features them striking some mock-Indian poses that would be more than cringeworthy today.

Same with this one:

Just stating the facts, man. I really dig chicks. That's not meant to be offensive - chicks are swell, daddy.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

For all the bumper crop of booty on his album covers, Jonah Jones' music must've been like the Miami bass of its day.

The answer is no!

I'll try again:

Fuck it, I give up

Jedermann sein eigener Fussball (Dada), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Now let's try again

Jedermann sein eigener Fussball (Dada), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

that must be a really, really, really politically incorrect jpg yer trying to post.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that why it won't post? I thought it was just my shit HTML

Jedermann sein eigener Fussball (Dada), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't imagine there'd be a way to filter it out based on the content even if someone wanted to do that.

type the url into your message and add the letter i before it...

i http: // www.politicallyincorrectalbumcover. jpg

...but take out all the spaces, incuding the one between the i and the http. there should be no spaces, no code, no nothing else.

or does it just not work for some people for some reason?

Jedermann sein eigener Fussball (Dada), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Got it! The interesting thing about this sleeve is that the couple on the cover are Genesis P-Orridge and Cosey Fanni Tutti, pre-Throbbing Gristle

Jedermann sein eigener Fussball (Dada), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Despite the title, it doesn't look like the guy is "forcing it".

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

It's confusing but the guy is on the left - so that is, in fact, Genesis P-Orridge's arse

Jedermann sein eigener Fussball (Dada), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

the other interesting thing about that one is that, violent content notwithstanding, it's a much, much better photo than any of the other covers so far offered in the same basic genre.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, okay. It still looks kinda consentual to me, I mean, they're both in a bathroom half-naked. Without the title the cover wouldn't look incorrect at all.

(x-post)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

SHE's doing the "forcing", I'd say.

UFO were crap.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

(x-post)
by which i mean, i'm mesmerized by those bathroom fixtures.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it's yer actual Hipgnosis isn't it, so it's probable that Peter Christopherson got Gen and Cosey the gig. Not sure about the "force it"/"faucet" pun - bit, errrrrrrrrr, forced.

Jedermann sein eigener Fussball (Dada), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, the pun is awful, and the title is awful, but the composition is fabulous.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Mentioned earlier and it is a shocker:

http://www.the-scorpions.com/english/discography/records/ScorpionsVK.jpg

Jedermann sein eigener Fussball (Dada), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

shocker, yes, but not at all dated. it's exactly as offensive today as it was the day it was released.

Not sure about the "force it"/"faucet" pun - bit, errrrrrrrrr, forced.

Hahahaha....that never even dawned on me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

So it's agreed that's actually Gen & Cosey?? Had that album as a kid, used to boggle over the cover. Now I'm re-boggled times infinity.

briania (briania), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

at first I thought that didn't make sense...then I remembered Peter 'Sleazy' Christopherson worked for Hipgnosis.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Who'd a thought there was a UFO/TG connection!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen that UFO cover before, but with the couple rendered practically invisible (You could just faintly see them in the shower.)

You people are still posting album covers that were NEVER politically correct, but I digress.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd also like to note that the original Hurricane album cover by photog Scarpati looks beautiful.
