Which album do you think is better?

Mike Copeland, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Skinner: just nicks it with the humour and quirks, tho 'showtime' still has a fine degree of those

Mills: enjoy the production more than AGDCFF, more sonic surprises, more EDGE, but too many cliches lyrically?

i'll come back to you in a few months

Showtime easily, it's way more musically interesting, the individual songs are better, and it holds up more to repeated listens.

And the correct answer is...

*drum roll*

...The College Dropout!

That's a good answer sir THANK YOU sir!

Jasper Milvain, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Showtime easily because while there are fine songs on both, some bits of AGDCFF are downright irritating, even more so than Kanye's fucking workout plan.

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

B-b-but Kanye's workout plan is better than the complete works of Zappa!

Jasper Milvain, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

but are the irritating parts of AGDCFF (examples?) MORE irritating then the irritating bits of Showtime (er, Marga Man?) and if so how?

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

SHOWTIME! There is not one sound on that record that I don't love. The hugest difference I think though is that AGDCFF (somebody should write a song with that chord progression ha ha) is only really its best when listened to straight through, where you can take just about any of the tracks on SHOWTIME out of context and they are still kickass. ESPECIALLY "Girls".

I love College Dropout too, but Kanye's skits are really wearing on my nerves at increasingly increasing rates.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I enjoy both more than their respective debuts (both less irritating musically), but after two listens I'm afraid that, due to inability to get past accent and/or disinterest in subject, I haven't been able to get into Dizzee's lyrics. Several of the Streets tracks resonated deeply for me from the first listen, and Dizzee's just makes cool background music for me right now. I fully admit I'm a lyrics man and with Relationships and Inebriation vs. Demand For Commercial Respect and Street Philosophy, I'm going with the former.

xpost jacob and nickalicious obviously need to get them situps ridin.

One of my favoritest things about Dizzee is interpretting (or usually just attempting to) his lyrics. It's not like he isn't speaking English, so I have the basic understanding of what's going on, but then trying to decipher all the arcane-sounding slang he's using, based on almost nothing but context, keeps everything about it fresh as fuck. With Grand..., everything is very plainly put and easily understandable, which is probably a big part of its powerful first-listen impact, but doesn't really give me as much to come back for again and again as Dizzee's spin. One of my favorite things a record can do is continue to surprise me with repeated listens, and (for me at least), this is where SHOWTIME succeeds and GRAND fails.

Showtime definitely seems like a grower, which is why I made sure to note I've only listened to it twice.

1 vote for AGDCFF. I love the story that runs through the album, and keep picking up little details everytime I listen to it, like Lifter Puller's "Fiestas + Fiascos."

My liking of A Grand Don't Come For Free has deteriorated in the past few months. My liking of Dizzee Rascal has exploded in the past week.
