Anyway, is the idea that Interpol might be this season's Modest Mouse? Can you see it? And how big's the backlash on ilm? Am I going to get a good quota of *yawns* and *mehs*?

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I read this as "Interpol's recent assassination"...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Interpol backlash is *SO* 2002!

Professor Challenger (ex machina), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, so has the backlash against the backlash begun in earnest?

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Who had the big backlash in 2003? Yeah Yeah Yeahs?

2004 = !!!
2003 = i dunno
2002 = Interpol
2001 = Teh Strokes

Professor Challenger (ex machina), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't we backlash against them all?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i haven't heard the new album so i don't want to throw my backlash out.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

But neither have any of the other backlashers!

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The Rapture had the backlash in 2003, duh.

This so called "ascension" I call PR.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

First off, Interpol already had a top 20 modern rock hit with "PDA." Modest Mouse's ascension was grounded on a rising popularity in indie rock but the breakthrough of "Float On" is what made the album stay in the top 30 for weeks rather than do the Wilco/Strokes free-fall from the top ten. "Slow Hands" getting played on the radio isn't a surprise at all following such a successful debut, but I don't hear anything on the album going whoooooop up the chart like "Float On" did. Antics is a solid follow-up with a big publicity campaign so yes it will do well, but calling it "this year's Modest Mouse" ignores the fact that Interpol are moving up gradually rather than scoring a fluke hit (I wouldn't be surprised if "Float On" winds up a "Heart Of Gold" or "Walk On The Wildside" where we get to joke that Modest Mouse are "one-hit wonders").

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I was really hoping you'd tell us Interpol recently covered Coltrane's "Ascension".

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't be surprised if "Float On" winds up a "Heart Of Gold" or "Walk On The Wildside" where we get to joke that Modest Mouse are "one-hit wonders").

Are we pronouncing "Ocean Breathes Salty" D.O.A. already?

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The video is terrific and it's not going to BOMB (Neil had a top 40 hit after "Heart Of Gold") but I'll be shocked if gets the same level of crossover.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck man their 2nd album is seriously seriously weak, like the fucking psychedelic furs w/out the saxophone, i mean who needs this shit

unbeliever, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

me.

nader (nader), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

White Stripes overall backlash was so big that no one will even admit it ever happened.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought Modest Mouse were "this year's Modest Mouse," myself.

chuck, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, didn't Neil hit with "Old Man," too?

chuck, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, wasn't Modest Mouse around considerably longer before they hit big? The weird thing with them was that by last year I thought they were finished. Interpol on the other hand has just been a steady climb.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only listened to "Antics" all the way through once, so far. Like the last album it has one song that I really really REALLY like and a bunch of others that all run together into a dark, icy, but not entirely unpleasant slurry.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

yep, were doing the same thing again. Waiting for another Nevermind.

Smells like Float on, anyone?

Jackson, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, didn't Neil hit with "Old Man," too?

I don't think that was a pop hit (I'll check allmusic's billboard chart later) but the whole AM/FM thing makes it hard to judge success based on charts. Lou Reed only had one top 40 hit but Rock'n'Roll Animal was a big FM smash and Sally Can't Dance went top ten albumwise.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pretty sure Heart of Gold (same album) was his biggest hit -- I think his only #1.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I've listened to it a few times, and while I think it's much smoother overall than the first one (which I've never been able to sit and listen to all the way through), no songs have stuck out for me yet as much as the few really good ones on "Bright Lights."

And tha guy's lyrics are still really, um. (I laughed when I heard him use the word "erection" in the final song.)

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I must be exiled in indieland but I thought Interpol was already sorta big -- I thought I read that Bright Lights was best selling Matador album ever, but maybe that's wrong. Doesn't put them on the level of Modest Mouse, of course.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, I misread that and didn't see what it was in reference too -- forget the last post.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Unrelated, right before I noticed Interpol starting to blow up a couple years ago, my band played a show with Paul Banks solo, and he was really good.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I can barely understand a word he's saying, but what I can make out usually is sorta clumsy and nonsensical (just like the last record). It's okay, I don't need to understand the lyrics to dig the mood of the tunes...

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

he uses the word "semi-erotic," discusses boats frequently.

I now merely judge Interpol lyrics against themselves. They have a criteria separate from all other artists. It's all about whether his cryptic art-school baiting amuses and/or affects me.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

the mood is cool, but i saw them on the curiosa tour, and thought they blew.

jackson, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

In the latest issue of Tape Op, the guitarist and drummer mentioned that the lyrics were worked up in the studio.

Yup, sounds about right.

righteousmaelstrom, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

It would take something pretty inspired to beat: "Subway she is a porno".

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I find myself wanting to hear the Interpol guy sing, in his dramatic style, the line "I'm running out of ethnic friends."

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Read their lyrics and that'll put the band in their proper perspective.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

duke teutonic, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

re: interpol live

you figure that a band that tours as much as they do would be able to have a somewhat respectable live show, but you'd be wrong..

still bevens (bscrubbins), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm. I'm going to see them soon.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

scott so sadly OTM. but it's such a nice song. i would play it for my mom.

Dave M. (rotten03), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

yay! A site has the lyrics up. Now I can pull some faves:

Evil is a gas in its entirety.

so is Narc

from "Take You A Cruise":Time is like a broken watch
And make money like Fred Astaire

All I know is that when I sing "Slow Hands" the line becomes: "look what you've done to my heart...asshole!"

from "Public Pervert: So swoon baby starry nights
May our bodies remain
As weak we move, I'll feed you light, baby
May our bodies remain
Oh yeah in history, I'll treat you right, baby
I'm honest that way, hey

The chorus of "Length Of Love" is complex salacious removal

My burnt copy didn't have a track listing so I had no idea the "it should be me!" song was called "C'Mere."

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel lucky that I'm mature enough to not look at this stuff humorlessly but I'm not old enough to get pissed off that they're more popular than Echo & The Bunnymen.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

that opening line in Take You On a Cruise is probably the best line on the whole record.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I swear he sings "I'll take you there!" (my favorite line for some reason) but I couldn't find it on that website.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I only just heard this band a few days ago - I grabbed "Evil" off someone's blog, and I'm rather infatuated with it. Is the album worth picking up?

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

yes. both are.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel lucky that I'm mature enough to not look at this stuff humorlessly but I'm not old enough to get pissed off that they're more popular than Echo & The Bunnymen.

You're invoking that last meme more than we are these days, Mr. Miccio. But since you went there, I'll also note that back in 1987 Echo coheadlined the big-outdoor-venue tour with New Order as opposed to being a supporting member of a festival tour, say.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

only this is Interpol's Heaven Up Here

All their colours turn to shit.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

dude have you even heard this?

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

"PDA" sounds just as much like a hit as, say, "The Cutter"

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Cutter" was always my least favorite EB tune.

Sorry - it's so annoying when people pan something sans explanation.

From Bright Lights til now, I find them drearily reminiscent of the usual suspects and to me it can only come across as shells of '79/80's faves of mine. ie JD, Cure, as you've mentioned. All great influences of course but somehow no tracks I've heard sound fresh. It is "pretty straightforward" which doesn't have to be a criticism but here I would say yes, too predictable.

Truthfully, I feel so weary when I hear them on the radio I have never reached for the full albums and spent more time with them.

Thea (Thea), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

also I'd be curious to see somebody do a pepsi challenge between a random track from either album and note which one has the more obvious "Curtis" voice.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

That's a great idea.

So many Interpolites have probably never heard of Ian, though once the movie comes out that will change.

Thea (Thea), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"PDA" wasn't nearly as big a hit as any of the indie crossovers from this year have been, though. Several of 'em ("Take Me Out," "Maps," "Float On," "Somebody Told Me") even made the top 100 (although none of 'em seem to be able to get enough momentum to make it into the top half).

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i love interpol and i have heard ian curtis, echo and the bunnymen et al ad nauseum. so fucking what. :-)

tricky disco (disco stu), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

All those songs came out well after "PDA" into a more indie-friendly market that Bright Lights success (it sold consistently over months rather than selling to a cult over the first week) laid the ground for. "Slow Hands," which will be the first to get the same promotional push those songs did, will be the true test of Interpol's commercial viability. I doubt it will do quite as well

There's a tonal similarity in their voices but I can't imagine anybody mistaking a Joy Division song for an Interpol song or vica versa. Interpol's production is pretty far from Martin Hannett-land (the sounds ring out rather than cut) and Curtis sounds genuinely troubled and nerve-wracked as opposed to a dude on the make trying to look sexy behind his shades. The only time they've isolated Banks' voice all haunting-like the way they would with JD is the last song on Bright Lights.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i think you misunderstood me. i said "some" Interpolites and I wasn't bitching, just pondering

Thea (Thea), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Forgot to finish this. I doubt it will do quite as well because "Slow Hands" doesn't have the same kind of lyrical hook as the other tracks mentioned. The Killers throw a little more Duran Duran in the Interpol sound and will grab more airplay if not more critical respect.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, I think Interpol has been decidedly under-recognized as one of the most influential rock bands of this half-decade. But I actually like all the bands whose success they've made possible as much as if not more than Interpol themselves.

"Slow Hands" is a weak first single with a meh music video. I think MTV really wants to give Interpol a push (they put the vid on the website, they've been doing news stories on 'em all the time) but the band isn't giving 'em much to work with with "Slow Hands". It's too bad.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm ok with it though. let the Killers (who I enjoy but are so silly that people will gain a new respect for Banks after hearing this guy) get the hate. The consistency of Antics makes me think these guys will be around for a while and don't need to make a big splash.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't heard Antics yet, but chances are I'll like Hot Fuss a whole lot more.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

it's more disco

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, I think "Somebody Told Me" and "Take Me Out" are the closest thing discopunk is going to get to a mainstream crossover before fizzling out entirely.

I still for the life of me can't figure out why "Danger! High Voltage" didn't take. It had all the right elements.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm actually not sure--I guess the last one is kinda different but not obscenely so.

No, I don't think they got that kind of push but I thought it could be a word of mouth sort of success--I mean, was there anyone under the age of 25 or so who heard that song and didn't think "wow, that's fucking great"? Plus I'd think the Jack White rumor would be enough of a mainstream connection to get its foot in the door. Maybe not.

manthony - I will listen to Fire; I'm interested to hear to taste the full-length novelty menu.

Thea (Thea), Thursday, 30 September 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

So many Interpolites have probably never heard of Ian

I've never really got this...Interpol are still probably more obscure now than Joy Division were at their peak. It's not like Joy Division (or the Furs, or Echo & Bunnymen, or New Order) were unknown. I would actually wager that nearly all people who like Interpol would know of Ian Curtis.

For some reason, that whole "today's kids have never heard of the originators" argument is really pointless. Cos it's like: 1. maybe they have, and 2. if they haven't so what? did you need to know the byrds back catalog to like the stone roses?

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 30 September 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

again, I repeat: I was not complaining of this phenomenon nor was I convinced it is true. If I were to come across a person who loves Interpol I would feel excited about sharing my favorite JD tracks with them and seeing what they think.

That's all, really. Was it Aristotle who's quoted as complaining of the "youth of today"? Aristotle's always bored me.

the two best songs are public pervert and narc. other than that, the intensity of the first album is missing. paul banks doesnt seem to have much drive left, its like even he cant be bothered to make his shitty lyrics sound better by putting on a great performance. in short i think on this album he sounds like he does live.

The new Interpol album is a lot better than the first and has three songs ("Evil," "Slow Hands," "NARC") which totally deserve to be big hits. Interpol are totally earning this.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 10:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Basically, Interpol are the goth REM.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 10:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, when I say they are like R.E.M., I kinda mean classic R.E.M.

I know I'm not the first person to say that Antics is the Reckoning to Turn On The Bright Lights' Murmur.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe, subconciously, Ned's an (classic) R.E.M. fan, considering his very subtle reference to one of their (classic) songs in his comment... ;-)

willem (willem), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

It's so subconscious that even after your comment I still don't know what you're referring to!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a song called "These Days" on Lifes Rich Pageant. I think that's what Willem is referring to, Ned.
