Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 30 September 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Or is this a question that's been done to death here?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 30 September 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

not to a newbie! You can try out all your material on me.
I go to the places they have books and political tracts mostly

tremendoid, Thursday, 30 September 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

there is an ilm room

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 30 September 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

One time I was downloading something from an ILMer and I didn't know it till they messaged me. Don't remember who it was or what music it was.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 30 September 2004 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess I didn't realize you could go anywhere. I just search for songs and albums.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 30 September 2004 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I go to my grime man, my crunk man, my bluegrass man, my tech-house man and my weed man.

Little Lord Travolta (nordicskilla), Thursday, 30 September 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Where do you *go*?

I don't understand.

Is this a joke about Microsoft?

Sasha (sgh), Thursday, 30 September 2004 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I assumed that you guys met and talked in one of the rooms.
This seems to not often be the case.
I don't often just search; I look for people to talk music with and swap.
Although, obviously, this doesn't net me much music.
So I thought I'd look for ya'll.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 30 September 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh. Well, I'm only in the ILM 'room', which usually sucks.

Sasha (sgh), Thursday, 30 September 2004 04:13 (twenty-one years ago)

the larger rooms are only good for cheap laughs.

bill neil (inabillity), Thursday, 30 September 2004 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i've never really been in any of the rooms, i can't even remotely see the point.

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Thursday, 30 September 2004 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

opportunity to meet somebody and trade music.
Searching doesn't generally net me any results.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 30 September 2004 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a way to find and browse users whose tastes you might respect. good for just trying random stuff. i don't really 'converse' tho

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 30 September 2004 04:32 (twenty-one years ago)

searching has been good to me (plus browsing folders of people i'm already downloading from) so i've not really found the need..

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Thursday, 30 September 2004 04:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Searching doesn't generally net me any results.

you need to donate to receive "privileges" if you want to search the entire network and get results. it's $5 a month but I can't think of a better way to spend five bucks.

bill neil (inabillity), Thursday, 30 September 2004 04:34 (twenty-one years ago)

So, if you're not on privileges, what part of the network are you missing out on?

Sasha (sgh), Thursday, 30 September 2004 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

the worthwhile part. i wouldn't bother with soulseek at all if i didn't have privileges.

(speaking of privilege...)

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Thursday, 30 September 2004 05:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Sasha, the majority. I'm not exactly sure of the technical aspects, but there is definitely a huge difference. I discovered that the first time I received privileges. I'm pretty sure you didn't need privileges for full searching until a few months ago when server strain was causing lots of problems.

bill neil (inabillity), Thursday, 30 September 2004 05:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Aha, that explains it... These days, I get completely different results simply by launching the same search twice at the same time.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 30 September 2004 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

ah, if you have the latest beta, you can search users files in the room. which is always good.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Thursday, 30 September 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm suspicous about paying the $5, because it goes through Paypal and then you have a credit card statement saying you paid Soulseek. What more proof do the RIAA need to (potentially) bust you?

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 30 September 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy crap, I've only been on for 2 weeks, haven't donated yet, and already have 4.5GB/50 albums of awesomeness. I don't think I could stand having more privileges.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 30 September 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I had privleges for a month or two and the only difference I noticed was being bumped up to the head of the queue more often, which was certainly nice. That was around January though, so maybe it's changed.

So yeah, the search function is pretty much all I use. I've never really bothered using it as a chat/trade interface.

sleep (sleep), Thursday, 30 September 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

The ILM channel is pretty much for random people coming in and asking "What is ILM?" I don't think any of the curious has gone away satisfied.

mikef (mfleming), Thursday, 30 September 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I usually search for albums I'm interested in, then once I find somebody who has the tunes, I browse their folders and see what else they're listening to. I don't think I would have ever started listening to screwed & chopped houston rap any other way. Dig dig dig.

aaron s, Thursday, 30 September 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The ILM room is good for browsing other people's folders - I've found plenty of gems this way. I'm in there the whole time I'm on Soulseek, almost as a matter of courtesy, so that people can browse my own stuff. (80% of which is soul/funk/jazz/latin/world/rare groove, as loaded onto my sister's Ipod before she disappeared to the Sudan for a year.)

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:54 (twenty-one years ago)

whats your user name mike?
i can never browse anyone in the ilm rooms folders, except one or two people...

robin (robin), Friday, 1 October 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

My user name is fairly self-explanatory. :-) My slsk usage varies wildly... from 48 hour binge queuing sessions, to several days offline.

Despite not having paid the 5 bucks, I can browse everyone's folders in the ILM room with the little blue icon that looks like wings, but nobody's folders with the little blue icon that looks like an earring.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 1 October 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i hate all of you
