TS: which band is a bigger bunch of faggots -- manowar, accept, or judas priest?
-- Eisbär (llamasfu...), September 30th, 2004.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 30 September 2004 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously, for such an allegedly "masculine," testosterone-heavy, alpha-male genre there does seem to be an awful lot of metal homoeroticism. some obviously deliberate (judas priest, turbonegro, accept), some not (manowar, random goth/black-metal acts). what gives?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 30 September 2004 03:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Manowar.

Gladlyacceptscriticsm, Thursday, 30 September 2004 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"bunch of faggots"?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 30 September 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

This particular faggot sez:

the best gay metal band ever was . . . .

Behead the Prophet No Lord Shall Live

now go smoke some helmet . . .

Technically it should be a "Gaggle of gays."

The gayest metal is copper.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 30 September 2004 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, Chris. Quick roundup of today's gayness, starting with the roads. The M70, the A3, the B664 and the A48(M), they're all gay as of midnight tonight. The gay elements are potassium, zinc, hydrogen, copper and argon. Quick look at the world's walls - the Wailing Wall is gay, Hadrian's Wall is very gay, the Great Wall Of China, that's not gay, and the Old London Wall has also stopped being gay. Gay cars next, they're the same as last night - all Volkswagens registered between 1982 and 1985, they stay gay for another fortnight. And finally, the gay seas are the Caspian and the Mediterranean, so see you there. Chris

Genius!
Although i think bronze is a little gayer, on account of so many people are into taking rubbings from it.

I so wish there was a gay Cradle of Filth cover band called Bundle of Sticks.

How exactly are we defining homoeroticism again?

Compared to Leather Nun, every band mentioned so far is straight as an arrow.

Pink Steel are NYC's funniest faux-German faux-gay metal band, as well as dish-dealing comedians.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Friday, 29 July 2005 03:16 (twenty years ago)

I don't remember Pansy Division doing anything the least bit metalish.

Pink Steel isn't anywhere as transcendent as Kiki & Herb, but if you've laughed at Dio or Wayne's World give em a shot (and they have a hobbit song).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 29 July 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

Pansy Division aren't metal at all! They're pop-punk-lite a la Blink 182/Green Day.

lmao @ what google pulls up:

1) This website is like ten layers deep into the underground heavy metal scene.
Tell us what your ultimate goal is with Gay Christ Records. ...

There was a brit band in the late eighties or early nineties, who "came out" in a really extreme way as a kind of sales gimmick, they kind of took the whole glam metal look to its ultimate degree. Sadly they sank like a stone, though IIRC their singles were kind of collectable at one point. I really wanted them to be great, but they were pretty mediocre IIRC. I just can't remember the band's name, they were pretty hyped, pre "coming out", and there was a lot of controv in the brit metal press @ the time.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

>Pansy Division aren't metal at all! They're pop-punk-lite a la Blink 182/Green Day.<

In fact, Green Day took em on tour with them right after "Dookie" to give some jockhead punkboys a consciousness-raising.

One day in the glorious future, all 80s metal will be considered gay-positive.

It's interesting how people often describe heavy metal (NWOBHM, thrash, pop metal) in terms of repressed homoerotic desires when it's so painfully obvious that it's not really repressed at all, but almost openly gay theater. It is fundamentally queer. It's also fucking awesome.

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

>almost openly gay theater

Except to most of the audience?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 29 July 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

No, it's boring. It quickly became old twenty or more years ago when people first started "describing" it.

I knew a guy in a local metal band called "Bangin' Moon". He was completely oblivious to the comic fodder that surrounded him.

Anyway, this tread reminds me of a Patton Oswald bit:

Kirk Hammett played on a Pansy Division 7" a few years back. No one seemed to think that outed him. Does anyone have it???

quirl hammet, Friday, 29 July 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

No, metal was often described in terms of being repressed, hypermasculine, and homoerotic; it was never described in open, celebratory terms. Otherwise, Halford would have come out sooner. I would say homophobia was a big part of the scene and fanbase and metalheads certainly didn't see it as "gay theater."

I'm saying that it was not overcompensating as the critics claimed, but actually celebrating its queerness, fans notwithstanding. I don't think that's an established perception and I've been keyed into the genre's cultural perception for at least 15 years. Sure outsiders often thought of it in homoerotic terms, but the scene was not openly stating it.

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Friday, 29 July 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

But whatever. A sharp, witty, glib rejoinder is all I ask for here.

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Friday, 29 July 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

some of those old judas priest videos are the GAYEST, CAMPIEST things ever (short of baltimora's "tarzan boy" video).

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 29 July 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

Almost everyone has at least one vintage video that seem in retrospect the GAYEST, CAMPIEST thing ever. There's no exlusivity to metal. Ever see old Patty Smyth and Scandal stuff?

George Smith, Friday, 29 July 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, agreed. Gay kitsch is JUST one of those wonderful pop culture spinoff products.
