peter $.., Thursday, 30 September 2004 04:00 (twenty-one years ago)

peraps his guest appearances on big jaz' hawaiian sophie and on big l's the graveyard?

Symplistic (shmuel), Thursday, 30 September 2004 06:10 (twenty-one years ago)

NEVER BRING UP HAWAIIAN SOPHIE IN MY PRESENCE AGAIN PLS.

is the big l off of that early one with "ov" in the name?

peter #.., Thursday, 30 September 2004 06:11 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry and yes (but he's wearing a hawaiian shirt in the video! that's how we knew he was going to be great!)

Symplistic (shmuel), Thursday, 30 September 2004 06:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i wish he weren't impossible to google :(
i'm eager to hear that early big l!

peter $.., Thursday, 30 September 2004 06:22 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a posse cut, and jay's voice is unrecognizably high. he sounds like he's 13. you should get that album (lifestyles ov da poor and dangerous) as it's great.

Symplistic (shmuel), Thursday, 30 September 2004 06:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah that album is wonderful, jay comes pretty nice with it - there's that whole part where he goes "never speakingbionicsmokinthatchronic bitches'll treatmelikeOnyxexPECT that I'll pull a punk's cap back and sign it."

Also check out Jay-z on "Can I Get Open" by Original Flavor.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 30 September 2004 07:21 (twenty-one years ago)

thx for the recommendations, and dj, that notation is great!!

i still don't know what they sold out of their trunks! probably great mixtapes, but why wouldn't they be made public by now/at least pop on p2p! does that strike anyone else odd?

peter $#.., Thursday, 30 September 2004 08:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I would've thought that was a white label 12" of "In My Lifetime", later signed and re-released by Payday/FFRR.

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 30 September 2004 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i've been listening to that big l album a lot recently, its great...
big l is great throughout, really the only other guest verse that holds its own is jay z's...
creep through your block fuck a glock,i step
through your neighbourhood armed with nothing but a rep
is a pretty good line

he does sound about 12 years old though

theres a couple of good big l/jay z mp3s floating around, mainly radio freestyles

robin (robin), Thursday, 30 September 2004 10:42 (twenty-one years ago)

best l/jay freestyle = 8 mins from stretch/bobbito

m. (mitchlnw), Thursday, 30 September 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

from 95

m. (mitchlnw), Thursday, 30 September 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

search: "From Marcy To Hollywood", the original "In My Lifetime"

destroy: the remix of "In My Lifetime" (the one w/ the "what's the meaning of life" hook)

I've got a mixtape with a bunch of pre-RD stuff on it, when I get home tonight I'll take a look at it to jog my memory.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 30 September 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

there's also a Mic Geronimo track called "Time To Build" that has Jay, Ja Rule and DMX on it, waaaay before any of them had deals, which is interesting to listen to pretty much for the the historical value alone.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 30 September 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"Killa Kam" is on that Big L album too.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 30 September 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah and check "I Can't Get Wit Dat" by Big Jaz for an example of his old double-time stuff.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 30 September 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

some more early stuff on the aforementioned mixtape:

"You're Only A Customer"
"Can't Get WIth That"
"What The Game Made Me"

a lot of RD-era stuff is also on the S. Carter mixtape (the one that came with the shoe)

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 30 September 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

it took him 8 years to use that "raise hell/til' it's heaven" line. (he could've waited longer actually).

m. (mitchlnw), Thursday, 30 September 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i love that in my lifetime remix. it's so breezy. and there's lots of other good guest verses on the big l album. 8 is enuff is one of the nicest posse cuts ever.

Symplistic (shmuel), Friday, 1 October 2004 05:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Dead Presidents Part 1 is a must-hear.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 1 October 2004 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i hate that raise hell/till its heaven line
its so clumsy sounding
did he use it on a released track?

robin (robin), Friday, 1 October 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

used it on "justify my thug".

m. (mitchlnw), Friday, 1 October 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

i found a white label with a bunch of pre-RD stuff on it in the bargain bin today.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 30 March 2008 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

That 7 minute freestyle session with Big L and Jay-Z is a great, unheralded moment in hip-hop history, even though Big L totally embarrasses Jay-Z. I recall seeing an interview with Jay-Z before the release of the Black Album where he claims that he beat some legends (he wouldn't say who) in freestyle battles when he was younger, but I find that really hard to believe given his performance here.

ablaeser, Sunday, 30 March 2008 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i have a white label of that 7 minute thing, great stuff

M@tt He1ges0n, Sunday, 30 March 2008 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

i dont really like his early tongue twisting style. seems unnecessary.

get the first single before dead presidents on payday though.

titchyschneiderMk2, Sunday, 30 March 2008 22:00 (eighteen years ago)

I'm unfamiliar with Jay-Z's stuff (I have the American Gangster soundtrack, but haven't really focused on it). But since Reasonable Doubt just turned up on eMusic, I grabbed it. Is it good?

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 31 March 2008 03:39 (eighteen years ago)

Naaw, it's incredible.

The Reverend, Monday, 31 March 2008 05:47 (eighteen years ago)

isn't this the part in the thread where we re-post a bo jackson overdrive thought on jay-z

J0rdan S., Monday, 31 March 2008 05:48 (eighteen years ago)

wld he wld post again ;_;

wilter, Monday, 31 March 2008 05:49 (eighteen years ago)

Well, I'm glad I downloaded it. If it really is an "instant classic debut," as the AMG review says, it probably deserves its own ILM thread.

What ever happened to that Bo Jackson Overdrive fellow, anyway?

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 31 March 2008 06:27 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah take my opinion with a grain of salt since I'm known as a Hov Stan but I think this is one of the best rap records ever made.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 31 March 2008 07:17 (eighteen years ago)

i don't think that's that challenging of an opinion hoos

J0rdan S., Monday, 31 March 2008 07:18 (eighteen years ago)

meaning it's not like you're trying to say mmm...food is one of the best rap records ever or something

J0rdan S., Monday, 31 March 2008 07:19 (eighteen years ago)

right right

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 31 March 2008 07:29 (eighteen years ago)

mmm...food is one of the best rap records though. of the last decade anyway.

titchyschneiderMk2, Monday, 31 March 2008 10:23 (eighteen years ago)

abanana, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 00:06 (eighteen years ago)
