All By Myself - various artists, surely!

Hallo ILM. How many versions of "All By Myself" can you name off-hand? I can think of Sinatra, and Google tells me CELINE DION covered it, but the version in my head is by neither of these two artistes. Drat!

I also know the person who was just about to get dumped by his girlfriend on "Angel", the popular TV series about a butter-eating wapmyr with a soul, liked to sing "All By Myself" at karaoke, and not very well at that, but I wouldn't say that counts, would you? I mean, he's not a famous pop star, or anything. Warhol did say: 5 mins of fame each, yes, but oh, SHUT UP won't you?

Anyway, I sa that I bet Stephin Merritt cd do a grebt cover of All By Myself if he put his tiny frame to it... gravelly voice, cigarette smoke trailing into air underneath single spotlight, Claudia plonking out the odd melancholy PLUNK on the old joanna, marvellous. Ricardo disagrees with me -

ILM....

DO YOU!?

Haha. Now you've read this thread, hopefully YOU TOO will get the song stuck in your head. NEW ANSWERS.

The Jayhawks included it in their live set in 2001. Dunno if they still do, or if anyone committed it to tape.

The Eric Carmen original is fantastic. (Is this the song we're on about?)

I think there's two ways to cover it. Either entirely straight (this is my vision to Mr Merritt!) or completely over the top - probably in drag.

xpost: Yes Rocktor C, I believe so! Perhaps it is the original I have stuck in my head, I dunno! As I haf no "file sharing network" running on 'yar I can't download anything to check - also I would be a bitter single in a chickflick if I ever got caught doing so, eh?

Always loved this, and it helped pique my young interest in classical music, especially when I discovered Rachmaninov dedicated the original to his analyst:

From AMG: Between January and April of 1900, Sergey Vassilyevich saw Dr. Dahl, a Moscow specialist in "neuropsychotherapy," daily, and was urged under hypnosis to compose the new piano concerto that a London impresario was asking for. Trance-therapy roused the composer from his lethargy; indeed, he worked with great facility on an excellent new concerto — the Second, in C minor, Op. 18 — dedicated to Dr. Dahl in gratitude.

So, while we're on it, who performs the definitive version of Concerto No. 2? Everybody's probably done it -- I'm familiar with the Rachmaninov/Stokowski/Philadelphia version, the Bernstein/Entremont/New York, the Ashkenazy and the Van Cliburn. Others?

I agree, Mrs Stevem. Surely someone here must be in a position to preposition Mr Merritt with the proposed cover? Surely?

Cripes Brianananana, I didn't know that at all. Excellent. I know sod all about classical music tho apart from the Arsemonkey's CD called Tabula Rasa which personally I think is rather GOTHIC ,not as much as CARMENA BURANA (sp?!) tho which is gothz0rs to the max. I shall MAKE NOTES.

Oh, man, you've gotta hear the Rachmaninov thing -- it'll make you appreciate the gorgeousness of the pop song all the more..

I like the way it's used in dramas/soaps when the character in question is sad and *doesn't want to be ALL BY HIM/HERSELF*. It's a very good choice of song for this because it goes "I don't wanna be/ALL BY MYSEEEELLLF". Just thought I'd mention this.
