It WAS a hell of a band our Herbie assembled. I have all those records with Sharrock on 'em. I even have Stone Flute, which sucks.

Most Herbie x SSs have been reissued on twofers (2 albs on and fer the price of one mid-priced disc). Haven't heard em all but but so far my fave is Son and Larry Coryell buzzin' down in the shine, vines and mud of MEMPHIS UNDERGROUND. Ace session cats too. (Herbie's PUSH PUSH, with Duane Allman, out on disc with bonus track, and Herbie's unashamed bare carbogut still on cover. Push Push, butt not away from the table.)

I've never heard this shit. What's a good starter for maximized SS brain-melt akshun?

OK, I'm trying to download everything available under HM's name on Poisoned. Some of it looks by its name like it might be a little fruity but will report duly.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 1 October 2004 04:06 (twenty-one years ago)

A *little* fruity! Ha Haaaaaaa, it gon be a lot fruity whenever Herbie takes a flute solo. But he does (generally)have good taste in musos, especially guitarists; still, most of it's pretty uneven cept for MU and PP, among the ones I've heard. Some of his later ones with Mick Taylor might be okay too.

Don A, Friday, 1 October 2004 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy shit.

One thing I have learned from this search is that I now know what Stereolab sounds like. No one told me before that they're like Thinking Plague with a groove.

'Kay, the only thing from MU I could get was "Battle Hymn of the Republic". Do I take it there's more feedback shredding on the other tracks?

It's not gonna be like one of Sonny's own; he's a distinctive ingredient, but down in the mix, in this pop-jazz thing. Can you EQ what you're downloading? Try "Chain of Fools."

Don, Friday, 1 October 2004 04:50 (twenty-one years ago)

He does get some room to cut up on Whisky, esp. "Philly Dog," and aso on there is another(can't remember title) in which he's mostly strumming, but it's this kind of almost atonal blues groove, like when Lou Reed got rid of Quine, but was still under his influence (or under Quine's having been inflenced by *early* Lou, and Sonny too I guess)

I think that either of the live ones are the best from the Herbie W/ Sonny era. There is one that is subtitled Hold On, I'm Comin' ... not sure if that is the one Scott mentioned it the thread title. Wait, let me check ...

OK, yeah, Hold On, I'm Comin' is the later one and I guess that is the full title. Live at the Whiskey is the earlier one and it's definitely the best. Memphis Underground is ok, but if I recall Sonny doesn't get much space. Windows Opened is pretty cool. Stone Flute is the one that's kinda boring and I didn't get much out of it.

Funny thing .. if you check out the cover to Roy Ayers's contemporaneous SToned Soul Picnic:

That's Sonny directly to the right of the chick in the cowboy hat, but he doesn't play on the record. Sadly.

Scott, have you heard Steve Marcus's The Lord's Prayer? Best version of "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" ever!

Push Push without the 24X12" gatefold copulatin' couple is unimaginable.

two months pass...

I was wondering about that new version. Is it all good? Is it an expansion on the lp released at the time or different takes?
Is it the best of the existing material? Supposed to be taken from 4 nights of recordings but I'm not sure what survives.
Also wondering if price might come down if I leave it a while or if it's likely to disappear. I don't know Real Gone as a label.

Stevolende, Saturday, 9 April 2016 01:33 (ten years ago)

I think this is the same line up as the new lp, though not sure about the drummer. This is a live version of oneo fthe tracks from Memphis Underground played by the Herbie mann band of the time I assume. The line up on that studio lp is a bit di9fferent though featuring Roy Ayers, Larry Coryell and a Memphis rhythm section alongside Sonny I think.

So anybody heard this new Real Gone set yet?

Stevolende, Saturday, 9 April 2016 18:44 (ten years ago)

I've heard it. It's really good. Mann himself doesn't play on all the tracks, either.

I like Memphis Underground, especially "Chain of Fools." Cool flute, with Sharrock and Coryell buzzing the bass mud (gonna get stung, fools)
