Songs About Dogs?

I don't mean metaphorically, I mean songs that are LITERALLY about a dog, or about dogs.

A couple off the top of my head:

-Dirty Old Egg Suckin' Dog (Johnny Cash sings it but I don't know if he wrote it, too lazy to check AMG)
-"Sadie" on the most recent Joanna Newsom album
-"Old Dog Blue" from the Anthology of American Folk Music

Henry Gross, "Shannon." Unfortunately, it's about a dog that dies.

Was "Shiloh" really about a dog? I always thought it was about an imaginary friend.

Oh yeah, and McCartney's "Martha My Dear" and "Jet."

Is Elvis' Hound Dog about a dog, or what? I just realised I've never paid attention.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 04:30 (nineteen years ago) link

I'd say it's a metaphor. After all, it wouldn't be much of an insult to say "You ain't nuthin' but a hound dog," to an actual hound dog. BTW it was originally done by Big Mama Thornton as far as I know, and her version kicks ass.

"Atomic Dog"

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 04:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Snoop Doggy Dogg songs walk the line for me, because they may be metaphors, but he carries the dog thing so far that I think he's almost talking about it in a metaphysical, Native American "spirit animal" sort of way.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 04:37 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, cool. But well, "you ain’t never caught a rabbit And you ain’t no friend of mine." - what kind of metaphor is that? What is a 'rabbit'? But then, what would the 'high class' thing mean if it's not about a person. 'Hey Elvis, I've got this high class dog for you - not just a hound, he's really good at catching rabbits'. Hmm. People wonder why I don't like Elvis.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 04:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Part of the problem here is that Elvis is a guy, but the speaker of the song is probably supposed to be a woman.

The "Hound Dog" is a no good, broke-ass scrubby man who comes around thinking he can get something out of the woman. "you ain't never caught a rabbit" is like "You've never done anything for me. You're no breadwinner." Yes, the high class thing also suggests a person.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 04:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay, my curiosity has been calmed. No Hound Dog then. Does 'I love my dog' by Cat Stevens count?

YOU SHOULD KNOW BY THE KINDNESS OF UH DOG THE WAY A HUMAN SHOULD BE (Don van Vliet)
You should know by the kindness of uh dog
The way a human should be
You should feel the wet wood heart of the tree
Wood sap pop like a frog's eye
Open t' the fly 'n the blood of the river
When it ripples 'n clicks like uh waterbell
'n the elephant in his beautiful grey leather suit
Though he's wrinkled he looks smart as hell
'n the turtle's eyes carry bags very well
'n the snake's in shape
He rattles like uh baby 'wears his diamonds
Better than uh fine lady's finger
'n his fangs are no more dangerous
Than her slow aristocratic poison
And he plays his games on uh grass bed
'n uh monkey never had uh guilty masturbation
'n uh monkey wouldn't shit on another's creation
And the fatman cries throughout all creation
'cause he's got uh cold
'n the icebear dives thru blue zero for uh frozen fish
'n the eskimo wears his hide 'n chews his heart
'n the beautiful grey whale oils some bitches lighter
Someday I'll have money 'n I can frame myself
What uh picture I'll be choppin' down uh tree

ULYSEES (Jake Thackray)

When Ulysees comes home
he always greets me with an open heart
but you will see how Ulysees
has taken my life apart

I've got a dog called Ulysees
he plays all day in the park
sniffing at his friends and the chestnut trees
and chasing cats 'til after dark

When my Ulysees comes home
wag wag woof woof
his tail in the air
his usual exuberance
is awfully hard to bear

When I stumble home at night I'm jaded and stale
and so I try to take a little repose
I don't want waking up with a happy tail
I don't want a kiss from a big wet nose

When my Ulysees comes home
wag wag woof woof
he gets on my wick
for Ulysees communicates
his love with a snuffle and a lick

I like to sit in my fireside chair
watching telly 'til the epilogue
in a semi coma and without a care
and I would do if it were not for my bloody dog

When my Ulysees comes home
wag wag woof woof
like a maniac
its useless to pursue my viewing
so I sent my television back

I tried to climb the social scale
and so I organized a little do
some very posh people came to my cocktail
but at half past seven my party was through

When my Ulysees came home
wag wag woof woof
I knew I was sunk
my guests were not at all impressed
and they left when my dog got drunk

I brought my sweetie home one night
and we both knew that this was it
sipping Chianti by candlelight
we were getting to a very important bit

When my Ulysees came home
wag wag woof woof
he broke the spell
intruding on my beautiful romance
like a hound from hell

My one solution is quick and grim
a little bottle of cyanide
I can't get myself to get rid of him
I shall have to perform a suicide

So when Ulysees comes home
wag wag woof woof
home for his tea
he'll have to cry a little bit
for having given so much love to me

briania (briania), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:33 (nineteen years ago) link

[what happened there?]

"She wanders alone through the night
A child with eyes burning bright
She extends her arms for an embrace a tiny smile
Her ruby lips on her doll- like face
The danger's a mystery here
As she invites you to hold her near
Her mirrored image could not be linked to
A woman's mind,so sharp and so distinct

Like a swimmer in a secret sea
Undecayed for all eternity
Claudia, better stay away from Claudia

The silkiness of her lips
As she bends low to kiss
A tiny seductress in ringlets and pearls you reel
In madness as the whole world about you whirls
Like the tinkle of a small silver bell
Her voice will put you under her spell
A crushed crysanthemum in her hand a beautiful doll of death
She'll take your dying breath"

Kim Wilde's dad, who I think recorded under the moniker "Shannon," did a song in the late '60s called "Abergavenny" that was in part about a red dog (a terrier?). Got it on a bubblegum compilation CD that I don't have with me right now ...

Kim Wilde's dad was Marty Wilde - he was a huge star in the UK in the late 50's (cf. Cliff Richard, Billy Fury, Tommy Steele) and he did indeed later haver a hit with "Abergavenny" (it's actually a part of South Wales fwiw) under the pseudonym Shannon.

Marie Provost by Nick Lowe

Mary Provost did not look her best

The day the cops bust into her loneiy nest

In the cheap hotel up

on Hollywood West July 29

She'd been lyin' there

for two or three weeks

The neighbors said

they never heard a squeak

For hungry eyes that couid not speak

Said even little doggie's have got to eat

?@

She was winner

The became the doggie's dinner

She never meant that much to me

(But now I see) Oh poor Mary

?@

Mary Provost was a movie queen

Mysterious angel of the silent screen

And run like the wind

the nation's young men steam

When Mary crossed the silent screen

Oh she came out west from New York

But when the talkies came

Mary just couldn't cope

Her public said Mary take a walk

All the way back to New York

?@

Those twin balms didn't help her sleep

As her nights grew long

and her days grew bleak

It's all downhill

once you've passed your peak

Mary got ready for that last big sleep

The cops came in

and they looked around

Throwing up everywhere over

what they found

The handywork of Mary's little dachshund

That hungry little dachshund

Poor Mary, poor Mary, poor poor Mary

Poor Mary

A Dog's Life by Wild Beasts

Read the odds of this song
Walk colder home, walk cold
My press face on the ice lead
A time is heaven when you call
Painted lipstick on it
Walk the truth up to me
Border like all the others
Just one of my sweaters
Made of something better
So throw a ball up into space
Hold the phone up to its face
Leave it outside in the rain
A tired walk by it's head
Never speak of me again
