"All gangsta rap is layered with contradictions, but by misdirecting their rage at other blacks, especially women, the Geto Boys confuse their neighbors with their enemies. Only twice, on the album's best songs, do they focus their rage at deserving targets. In "Fuck a War," Bushwick Bill fingers the racial hypocrisies of the gulf war ("They put niggers on the front line/But when it comes to getting ahead, they put us way behind/I ain't gettin' my leg shot off/While Bush's old ass is on TV, playing golf"). And on "Trophy," an anti-Grammy rant, Willie D disses Elvis (who wins an award for "most appearances made after death"), then bum-rushes the stage and crowns his group champs for "most 'fuck' words in a song," So far – in a music full of great and complex artists – that's the Geto Boys' only distinction."

great to see that review after so long. but its bullshit, that that was all the GB had to offer. still, this IS rolling stone.

as evidence of just how the press and mainstream press viewed hip hop so er, differently to hip hop critics, they didnt like ice cube or a tribe called quest's first albums either.

from the one-star RS review of 'Smoke Some Kill' - "Schoolly D is this year's Motley Crue"

What hip-hop albums have ever gotten 5 stars in RS?

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 25 October 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

sometimes i like to pretend i am very small and warm (ex machina), Monday, 25 October 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Did they really?

I know the recent beastie boys album did.

Did they give 5 stars to Nation of Millions?

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 25 October 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

rolling stone didnt know shit about hip hop in the early days... i havent read it in a long time but im willing to bet theyre still getting it wrong (just like Q or most other mainstream mags).

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 25 October 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's entirely possible that 5 Burroughs was the first five-star rap album in RS history.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Monday, 25 October 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 25 October 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Hard to Earn - 4
Daily Operation - 4
Jay-Z didn't merit a review until the Blueprint - 3.5

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 25 October 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

jay-z has only made 2 albums worthy of review, anyway.

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 25 October 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

robin (robin), Monday, 25 October 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

DL 'minds playing tricks on me'.

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 25 October 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

but by misdirecting their rage at other blacks, especially women, the Geto Boys confuse their neighbors with their enemies. Only twice, on the album's best songs, do they focus their rage at deserving targets

then theres the self loathing. the rage at themselves and their situation.

bulbs (bulbs), Monday, 25 October 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

if any review shows a lack of credibility from the hands of RS, its a 5-star critique of 5 burroughs.. well that and that solo mick jagger lp..
