Neptunes produce a bunch of this. I'm not sure what I think yet but the best song is definitely three kings. Like a Boss is great too. Serg will have a post on Many Shrimp about it soon, I think he'll be posting songs too. The Neptunes are trying some new steez and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

Grab these while they're hot.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 06:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The Neptunes produced those beats? Damn, it sounds like they contracted it out to some kid with a Boss drum machine and a cracked copy of Acid...

Mediawhore, Tuesday, 26 October 2004 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

nah they didn't produce those. They produced maybe 5-6 on the album though.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

what's the classic rock guitar sample in 'Rock Star'? it's maddeningly familar.

cloverland, Tuesday, 26 October 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

aerosmith, "dream on." isn't it?

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i've seen the video for three kings a few times...like the cheap-o beat alot.....but man am I missing something with Slim Thug? He seems like such a slug....zero charisma, boring voice, boring lyrics, hook that's basically just 50 Cent in the club tweaked a little....IMO he totally gets shown up by both TI and Bun B.....is he always this boring as an MC?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think he's particularly boring at all - his voice is a really distinctive baritone. It may be partially just getting used to listening to Houston rappers from the whole screw scene - slow, precise rapping, lots of talk about cars, and an emphasis on matter-of-fact punchlines etc. Anyway I really like Slim Thug's drawl and when I see the video I like how his eyes are half open and you can't tell if he's stoned or if he's just waiting til the right time to kick your ass.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Serg's story of how he aquired an advance of this album is pretty awesome, incidently.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
i actually really like slim thug. thanks to this thread. "three kings," "like a boss," "you're too clean," that song about tippin' on something? all gold.

i need to hear the album.

seven months pass...
the official Already Platinum is out today. I'm a little disappointed, ST falls into the same trap as a lot of the Houston rappers (and crunk, too) seem to fall into, just song after song of repetitive boasting (looking for a catchy hook) and very little storytelling, altogether lyrically and musically banal. The Neptunes productions are definitely the best of the CD, the more H-townish tracks get bogged down and repetitive.

Alex in SF will be sad.

I'd still rather be in Tokyo (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

I just bought the 2CD version ten minutes ago! I won't get to listen til tonight though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

There you go.

I'd still rather be in Tokyo (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

8 Neptunes tracks (out of 14 possible, I assume the "Intro" and "The Interview" are skits)! For some reason I was led to believe they had produced much less on this.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

There should be a really hot hip hop track called "intro" or even "skit".

I'd still rather be in Tokyo (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Haha well the last track is called "Dedication". But it's produced by the Neps so it might or might not be a track.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

The three screwed & chopped tracks at the end of the bonus disc were done by Mr Rogers?!?!?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to cop this right now. Frankly Milo's criticisms don't seem like the kind of thing that'll bother me.

deej.., Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

i wish the neps produced less on this...

ppp, Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

The same was true of the leak. I hope I'm not totally disappointed that way :(

deej.., Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

Whoa I like this a lot more than I expected to! Cool and Dre rule. Some of the Neptunes beats do not suck!

deej.., Wednesday, 13 July 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

Neither track is a skit!

I think this is great. Slim Thug's Click Click >>> Missy's Click Clack

deej.., Wednesday, 13 July 2005 06:07 (twenty years ago)

I listened to the bonus disc last night! It's great (southern hip hop seem to have perfected the art of making the bonus disc sound more attractive than the album proper.) I've not listened yet to the album proper, but the three great tracks which were floating around already ("Like A Boss", "3 Kings", "I Ain't Heard of That (Remix)") + the bonus disc alone is worth spending money on.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe "Like a Boss" was produced by the Neptunes! So functional for them.

deej.., Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

This album starts out grea! Tracks 1-7 are fantastic!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Like A Boss is good.

I'd still rather be in Tokyo (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

Alex OTM, the only track I don't really like is "Everybody Loves a Pimp," so generic.

deej.., Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

(wait til you get to "Miss Mary")

deej.., Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

I'm confused by Tom Breihan's apathy to "Miss Mary" and "Like a Boss."

deej.., Wednesday, 13 July 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

The album tails out a little by the end, but it's still quite good (better than also good Mike Jones album.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

"Like A Boss" is boring as hell.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

I sure do like "I Ain't Heard of That", except Pharrell looks like a MASSIVE IDIOT in the video. Nice fronts, dude.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

Pharrell looks like an IDIOT in a video!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

"Like A Boss" is boring as hell.

Whoa I don't think so at all. Heavy bass shuffle funk. Or something. I donno I like it a lot, more than "I Ain't Heard of That" and I like that song a lot too.

deej.., Wednesday, 13 July 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

"Diamonds" is sooooo gooooood.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

TS: Slim Thug vs. Kanye

deej.., Wednesday, 13 July 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

That's mean.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

I listened to this again a couple of times today (I drive a lot) - it's got good tracks (six or seven, maybe more), but it all bleeds together and after 30 minutes I want to put on something else. Slim can't really vary his style enough to keep me going for an entire album. And again, the boasts get boring after a while, they aren't very inventive or good laugh lines or anything.

The Bun B "Ain't Heard of That" is good (like the Jay-Z remix better), "Like A Boss" and "3 Kings" are damn good, and I love the track with Pusha (can't remember the name and the CD is out in my truck).

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

"Click Clack" is the Pusha track. Did you get the bonus disc with your copy?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but I haven't listened to it yet outside of "Ain't Heard of That."

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

man how much egg is this dude gonna have on his face if this CD doesn't go platinum!?

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

That's his schtick, though - "doesn't matter if I sell 100 thou or a million, I'm already platinum."

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 14 July 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

I doubt he'll actually go platinum with it The best tracks were leaked, then out on the bootlegged original version and now this (and I don't hear any #1 singles), there hasn't been a lot of hype around the release, the Neptunes association doesn't sell as well as it used to, etc.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 14 July 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

You don't like "Miss Mary" or "Dedication" or "Diamonds," Milo?

deej.., Thursday, 14 July 2005 02:18 (twenty years ago)

Platinum not so hard to believe this week; the album went to number 2, just behind R Kelly.
