I had carried around some sort of secret pride about NOT having one, about thinking they weren't such a big deal, and what was all the fuss about some stupid product anyway, and that it was a lot of money for the convenience of not having to change CDs in a discman.
Obviously now I have to like it and USE it a lot -- I live with her and I can't hide the truth. So make me feel good about it.
One advantage I've thought of is that I can listen to all those great songs from mediocre albums that I don't want to bother listening to all the way through.

i have also increased my cd purchasing habits because i know i will listen to the cds a lot more now that i can conveniently take them everywhere i go, so i'm expecting my music knowledge to increase exponentially. and smart lists rock my socks!! it seriously is the best toy purchase i've ever made. also shuffle!! constant excitement when it comes up with random songs.
anyway perhaps i'm a bit sad. also i did not share your secret pride thingy, i've been yearning for one for ages.

I'm not being flippant. I've lusted after one as well, and this is the rational argument against buying oen that I keep telling myself. I mean, just why do I want this fucking thing? It's not like it's going to do anything that I already can't do (in one manner or another) with my portable MD player, which I do use a lot and am perfectly satisfied with.
But, still, although logic and reason tells me I have no need for the damn thing, I STILL want one. Shit.
The "iPod guilt" is two-fold, I think: 1) Those of us who want one don't really NEED it, and 2) We've been secretly smug for ages, believing we are so above manipulation and commodity lust fostered by capitalism. And yet, well, guess we are manipulated after all.

as for me, my ipod is more or less the *only* place I listen to music now because I'm never at home. I'm really glad I have one and have never had hip anti-ipod delusions of cred.
― mrjosh (mrjosh), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)
What thread are you referring to? I'm not following this. Do you have a link?
I'm happy that you are happy with your iPod, mrjosh. No need to get defensive of hostile about it. I'm not begrudging anyone their iPods. It's a very cool device. As I said, I want one for myself, but, for me anyway (what with my MD and all), I can't reasonably justify such an expensive (I'm not rich) purchase, particularly one that would, well, play music just like my MD does. So, yeah, I know I would feel guilty if I did bought an iPod right now. (That was the question I was responding to.)
Also, mrjosh, don't assume you know what I do with a portion of the money I do get. I try NOT to buy "a bunch of crap". I do give away at least 20% (that's about what I can afford) of my income (which is hardly a mid-level one) to the poor, and will continue to do so.

Maybe you should feel thankful about having such a giving person in your life. Maybe you should carry it around with pride, because your girldfriend spent her hard-earned money to buy it for you. Geez.
Does that help?

Also, I got mine instead of a car cd player, I just use the tape deck adapter. Now I don't have cds lying all over my car getting scratched and lost.

My fav. thing about the ipod is not having to carry a bunch of cd books, discman, batteries, and other assorted shit for commuting to work and vacations and such.

Normally you're restricted to 4kb text files, but with this you can split 'em up easily. It's wonderful. I load up the day's online music reviews every morning so I can read them during downtime when I'm away from the PC.

Yeah, the guilt is insane. It's a truly great innovation that is fun, time saving, exciting, and you can rediscover stuff you might never have been inclined to listen to again... there's so many reasons why iPods are excellent.

The reception definitely gets worse the more the battery runs out. I just stick mine on the dash where it faces the outside antenna. I like it because it works in the car, the office, at a friend's house, wherever there's a radio. It's my Instant Party Crasher.
― Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 28 October 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)
Yes but do you give it a tongue bath on a weekly basis? (I do.)
The FM interference I've experienced with the iTrip is minimal, no worse than very light vinyl crackle. I've tried another FM deal with horrible results -- it helps with the iTrip that you can use just about any frequency, rather than four options that are almost always eaten up by some college or high school station.
The two cassette deals I've used have muffled the sound horribly. I'd rather have a little crackle than no treble.
And of course I'd rather have it sound exactly like a CD but I suppose that's the trade-off -- having all that music at my disposal, as opposed to staring blankly at my shelves for 20 minutes, attempting to predict what I'll want to listen to for x amount of time.
― Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 28 October 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)
i had an iTrip for my first-generation iPod. it worked like a dream. it was especially great in the kitchen: i'd put the iPod on top of the microwave and broadcast to the crappy ghettoblaster that sat on the worktop.
one day i was cooking dinner while slightly drunk (as usual). i picked up the iPod to change tracks but didn't put it back very carefully. the weight of the iTrip caused it to TOPPLE off the edge of the microwave, BOUNCE off the worktop and SMASH on to the floor.
so either:a) the iTrip was dangerousorb) i'm a total tit
