Make me feel good about my new iPod

Ok, so my girlfriend just gave me one for my 25th birthday. It was a wonderful gift, as she knows I am a music nut, but all the same, I have to admit that I'm not thrilled.

I had carried around some sort of secret pride about NOT having one, about thinking they weren't such a big deal, and what was all the fuss about some stupid product anyway, and that it was a lot of money for the convenience of not having to change CDs in a discman.

Obviously now I have to like it and USE it a lot -- I live with her and I can't hide the truth. So make me feel good about it.

One advantage I've thought of is that I can listen to all those great songs from mediocre albums that I don't want to bother listening to all the way through.

what the fuck is this ipod guilt?

Robert Randolph, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i have actually really listened and grown to love heaps of album songs that i never took much notice of before (thinking they were mediocre) since i've had mine. also when you're at work and you suddenly think of a song you want to hear... YOU CAN!! i have had mine for about 6 weeks and the novelty of this has yet to wear off.

i have also increased my cd purchasing habits because i know i will listen to the cds a lot more now that i can conveniently take them everywhere i go, so i'm expecting my music knowledge to increase exponentially. and smart lists rock my socks!! it seriously is the best toy purchase i've ever made. also shuffle!! constant excitement when it comes up with random songs.

anyway perhaps i'm a bit sad. also i did not share your secret pride thingy, i've been yearning for one for ages.

gem's reasons are why i'm perhaps finally leaning towards submitting to the 'pod..

plus theres all the fun of deciding which 10,000 songs you will put on there.

You can feel good about the fact that the $$$ spent on your iPod could have fed a few villages in Bangla Desh for at least a week or two.

I'm not being flippant. I've lusted after one as well, and this is the rational argument against buying oen that I keep telling myself. I mean, just why do I want this fucking thing? It's not like it's going to do anything that I already can't do (in one manner or another) with my portable MD player, which I do use a lot and am perfectly satisfied with.

But, still, although logic and reason tells me I have no need for the damn thing, I STILL want one. Shit.

The "iPod guilt" is two-fold, I think: 1) Those of us who want one don't really NEED it, and 2) We've been secretly smug for ages, believing we are so above manipulation and commodity lust fostered by capitalism. And yet, well, guess we are manipulated after all.

Majooba, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

well you're right i don't really NEED it but i could say that about practically everything i own and i use the iPod more than pretty much any other consumable i've ever bought. also i didn't have an MD or a discman before i bought it.

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't even have so much iPod guilt as iPod backlash. There was such a media frenzy over them, people making it out to be a culture-changing phenomenon that it really wasn't. I also just resist new things. I was one of the last I knew to get a cell phone, though now I'm glad I have it.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

wtf? Unless you're actually spending hundreds of your dollars to help kids in bengladesh, then your anti-ipod smugness is just self-deceiving b.s.! how is that a rational argument? the money you spend on your ipod would probably have gone to a bunch of crap you buy to fill up the empty void in the center of your soul referenced on an earlier thread today.

as for me, my ipod is more or less the *only* place I listen to music now because I'm never at home. I'm really glad I have one and have never had hip anti-ipod delusions of cred.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

"the money you spend on your ipod would probably have gone to a bunch of crap you buy to fill up the empty void in the center of your soul referenced on an earlier thread today."

What thread are you referring to? I'm not following this. Do you have a link?

I'm happy that you are happy with your iPod, mrjosh. No need to get defensive of hostile about it. I'm not begrudging anyone their iPods. It's a very cool device. As I said, I want one for myself, but, for me anyway (what with my MD and all), I can't reasonably justify such an expensive (I'm not rich) purchase, particularly one that would, well, play music just like my MD does. So, yeah, I know I would feel guilty if I did bought an iPod right now. (That was the question I was responding to.)

Also, mrjosh, don't assume you know what I do with a portion of the money I do get. I try NOT to buy "a bunch of crap". I do give away at least 20% (that's about what I can afford) of my income (which is hardly a mid-level one) to the poor, and will continue to do so.

Majooba, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually bought mine on a bit of a whim because I got a good deal on it, but it has totally changed my music listening habits. What gem said, pretty much!

Haaaaaitch (haitch), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

majooba, this is the earlier thread--referral to which will hopefully make clear the spirit of my tirade, which is not 'i, mrjosh, know that you, majooba, spend all your money on crap and not on good causes, so give it up already,' but rather, 'generalized feelings of guilt associated with enjoying music are kinda silly.' obviously, i'm not trying to say that you're under any obligation to buy an ipod or anything bizarre like that. i am just surprised that music-related guilt has come up twice in one day on ILM.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

e.g., as in the original post of this thread--having "some sort of secret pride," etc. it just seems weird to me--kind of like the secret pride i used to have about not owning a car, until i realized that not owning a car sucks.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I think what is bothering you is that only NERDS spend HUNDREDS AND HUNDEDS OF DOLLARS to listen to your ENORMOUS music collection on TINY LITTLE lame-ass speakers like you're SCARED OF OFFENDING THE WORLD. Real Men listen to THE SAME GEORGE THOROGOOD ALBUM over and over on old crackly stereos AT EXTREME VOLUME and DO NOT GIVE A CRAP what THE WORLD THINKS.

Hurting, your girlfriend is trying to EMASCULATE you. When you get home from work, DO her UP her POOPER.

BURNTPIKELET, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 04:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, you're girlfriend gives you a very nice, expensive, thoughtful present, and you need some random internet people to make you feel good about it?

Maybe you should feel thankful about having such a giving person in your life. Maybe you should carry it around with pride, because your girldfriend spent her hard-earned money to buy it for you. Geez.

Does that help?

supercub, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 04:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I had carried around some sort of secret pride about NOT having one

so the ipod weighs less, right?

"THE SAME GEORGE THOROGOOD ALBUM over and over on old crackly stereos AT EXTREME VOLUME and DO NOT GIVE A CRAP what THE WORLD THINKS."

This sounds really good, actually. But it depends on which Thorogood album.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 05:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i have 3 reasons for not getting an ipod:

* they are really ugly, like all apple hardware.

* they are too big. but most importantly,

* i listen to too much music already. most days when i work and
usually also when i go out at night. i'm quite happy to have an
hour or 2 of silence or city sounds

xenografia, Thursday, 28 October 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I really, really, really wish that I had an ipod.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 28 October 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

You can go running and have thousands of songs to distract you from the fact that running sucks, and it will never skip.

Also, I got mine instead of a car cd player, I just use the tape deck adapter. Now I don't have cds lying all over my car getting scratched and lost.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 28 October 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I still like having a car system in case the ipods battery runs out..

My fav. thing about the ipod is not having to carry a bunch of cd books, discman, batteries, and other assorted shit for commuting to work and vacations and such.

still bevens (bscrubbins), Thursday, 28 October 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

You can d/l music reviews, books etc and read them on your iPod!

Normally you're restricted to 4kb text files, but with this you can split 'em up easily. It's wonderful. I load up the day's online music reviews every morning so I can read them during downtime when I'm away from the PC.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 28 October 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

My new car has a CD player but no cassette. Does anyone have any experience with those devices that plug into the iPod (or any headphone jack) and broadcast on an FM frequency? Any recs?

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 28 October 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

iTrip, far and away the best device I've used.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 28 October 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I am surprised by 2 things: (1) Xeno's assertion that they are ugly (I don't think they could be any cooler looking! I spend minutes staring at mine, hypnotised by its beauty, and (2) Matthew Perpetua doesn't have one. Man, Apple should send you a box of free ones. Or at least someone at a label somewhere. If I was rich I would send you one.

Yeah, the guilt is insane. It's a truly great innovation that is fun, time saving, exciting, and you can rediscover stuff you might never have been inclined to listen to again... there's so many reasons why iPods are excellent.

Clusterfuck at the Baja Fresh Salsa Bar (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 28 October 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck an iTrip, I returned mine. It worked pretty well in everyone else's car, but my FM receiver must suck because it was chock full of static unless I held the iPod right up next to the stereo.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 28 October 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

My CD player has a panel that looks as if it could gave been ordered with a cassette player, so maybe I'll poke around and see if there's any way to wire the iPod in. I could live with a wire connection, and that's supposed to give better sound than any FM broadcast.

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 28 October 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

If your car stereo happens to have a digital input then you can plug it right it.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 28 October 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

My first iTrip broke. I pulled it off and it stuck inside the headphone jack. I went ahead and bought another one. Thirty bucks. Meh.

The reception definitely gets worse the more the battery runs out. I just stick mine on the dash where it faces the outside antenna. I like it because it works in the car, the office, at a friend's house, wherever there's a radio. It's my Instant Party Crasher.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 28 October 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I spend minutes staring at mine, hypnotised by its beauty

Yes but do you give it a tongue bath on a weekly basis? (I do.)

The FM interference I've experienced with the iTrip is minimal, no worse than very light vinyl crackle. I've tried another FM deal with horrible results -- it helps with the iTrip that you can use just about any frequency, rather than four options that are almost always eaten up by some college or high school station.

The two cassette deals I've used have muffled the sound horribly. I'd rather have a little crackle than no treble.

And of course I'd rather have it sound exactly like a CD but I suppose that's the trade-off -- having all that music at my disposal, as opposed to staring blankly at my shelves for 20 minutes, attempting to predict what I'll want to listen to for x amount of time.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 28 October 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

a cautionary tale

i had an iTrip for my first-generation iPod. it worked like a dream. it was especially great in the kitchen: i'd put the iPod on top of the microwave and broadcast to the crappy ghettoblaster that sat on the worktop.

one day i was cooking dinner while slightly drunk (as usual). i picked up the iPod to change tracks but didn't put it back very carefully. the weight of the iTrip caused it to TOPPLE off the edge of the microwave, BOUNCE off the worktop and SMASH on to the floor.

so either:
a) the iTrip was dangerous
or
b) i'm a total tit

I heart my ipod. Its definitely eliminated that whole standing in front of my music trying to pick 5 cds for the changer thing.

Changer Bah!

Endless music in a variety I can not predict rules the school.

The other day it went from "What Lola Wants" to Closer Music to Talk Talk.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 29 October 2004 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Funny how no one mentions the absolute worst "feature" of the iPod (which in my mind makes it laughable as a music-playing device): its inability to play tracks gapless. Yes, that ankoying two second silence between each and every track. Try listening to "The Faust Tapes" on an iPod. Lame, very lame.

(Please don't say, "Oh, Apple can fix this with a firmware upgrade." People have been complaining about this for years, and Apple has yet to do a damn thing about it.)
