its true, im interested in popular ILM opinion on the matter. but more importantly, why is this a thing that has never been done?

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

because it's impossible

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

we once had a thread derailed by this, can't remember which one.

m. (mitchlnw), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i think it was the 'what's up with daft punk' one

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

It was the one asking when DP were returning. It subsequently got derailed by action figures.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Sweet, tiny little action figures that I will never own :''''''''''''''''''''''

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

muahahahahahahaha

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Love 'em both, but DP no contest.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

ok - resist derailment!

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

CLEARLY BASEMENT JAXX. Absolutely no contest here.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Basement Jaxx by a mile, I'm still slightly bemused by the hivemind love for DP.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

be specific! be explicit!

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

more soul, more humanity, bigger and better tunes, less annoying robot voices, more fun.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Based on the manic intensity of Kish Kash vs the rico suave of Discovery, Jaxx (barely). But then, the Jaxx have 3 full albums to DP's 2, which also gives them a greater breadth of quality.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

plus all those EPs

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Basement Jaxx does things much more in my style than Daft Punk.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Daft Punk every time. I love Basement Jaxx but they lack the emotional punch of Daft Punk. haha now I will go on a rant about the soulessness of machines and the empty illusions of sonic trickery, and end by saying the Beatles are the greatest band ever.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

DP: le disco.

BJ: le funk.

This dancer's choice is clear. It's both!

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

is the first basement jaxx very good? also, should i buy discovery today?

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I have one album by each band: Kish Kash > Discovery.

I've also heard a couple other stray tracks by each band: "Red Alert" > "Revolution 909."

Ergo: Basement Jaxx > Daft Punk

(Simply put, the Jaxx seem to have more range than Daft Punk do.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

more range certainly, but I've listened to Homework and Discovery ten thousand more times than any of the Jaxx's albums.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I am not really a voice of reason here.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Basement Jaxx but they lack the emotional punch of Daft Punk

can't agree with this at all - 'Don't Give Up' immediately sprang to mind

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

'Digital Love' kinda wraps the entire argument up though - 'If I Ever Recover' (and 'Being With U' et al) could never keep up.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

they're just as emotionally resonant in their own way, for me at least

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

BJ live and for singles, DP for ideas and albums.

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Jaxx do better remixes too - tho it's funny how neither are that prolific when it comes to remixing (they both initially were tho back in '97)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

'Don't Give Up' immediately sprang to mind

No, you're mistaken, that was Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel.

Err, anyway, definitely Daft Punk - the gorgeous repetitiveness wins it here. But, then again, the Jaxx have the more freewheeling spirit... Sorry - can't choose.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

No, you're mistaken, that was Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel.

is that a joke?

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I have one album by each band: Kish Kash > Discovery.
I've also heard a couple other stray tracks by each band: "Red Alert" > "Revolution 909."
Ergo: Basement Jaxx > Daft Punk

It would appear that you are confused as to how to use that symbol. You have it backwards on every count.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Homework is better than any of the jaxx albums, but BJ have more tunes overall and live they are the tits.

oats (oats), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

too much patronising on here

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

haha I thought of Bush/Gabriel too. there is definitely an emotional punch there. it's a real whiskey bottle thrown against the wall in a crap film sort of song. "I was at rock bottom, questioning my own existence" or some shit.

Daft Punk have more of an air of mystery to them than Basement Jaxx too.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll have both please

(but the Jaxx edge out the Punks if it comes right down to it)

from Fly Life all the way through to Kish Kash, Feliz and Simon have been responsible for so many amazing ideas and flawless executions of those ideas. they've got soul, they've got energy, they've got breaksbeats, they've got filters, they've got divas, they've got tracky 4tothafloors, they've got guitar-jazz weirdness, they've got moody as fuck ballads, they've got electrodancehall, they've got HOUSE HOUSE HOUSE

daft punk is good bouncy filter electro house robotic frilovity, but they just don't cover as many styles as well and don't have AS MANY truly memorable songs for me

still love 'em both though. it's a tough call

rentboy (rentboy), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i think Remedy is better than Homework personally, or at least i prefer it slightly - the former a more thoughtful construct, the latter all about the experimentation and impact (which Jaxx do but were keen to contain it more into 'songs' it seems)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

as for live, daft punk live is ten times better than basement jaxx live, and I only own the fecking cd.

x-post I agree Basement Jaxx should be deemed better and have been more innovative and covered way more bases, but as a pop group or a dance act I just can't say I prefer them to Daft Punk. sometimes covering loads of bases isn't as good as covering one or two.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Daft Punk live in '97 remains my fave gig ever but that was then and i think Basement Jaxx take the live crown if only for gigging more often and making it a more intimate/'friendly' experience. DP are too much of a unknown quantity live as in we have no real idea what it would be like for the last 5 years.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and obviously that should have read Felix, right?

rentboy (rentboy), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

The area that the Punks certainly win (narrowly again) is on the video front (that film I've never seen does up their stock a bit).

As a pop group, I'd certainly prefer Jaxx to DP, though.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

bah gigging more often is not worthy of more praise, particularly not when the live show is so so similar every time.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

oh come on, it's only atypical in it's 'similarity' - no more than anyone else inc. DP. their lack of gigs/opportunities to see them live counts against them a lot in my view.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 28 October 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno, that's their finicky personae, the live gigs they did do are probably the most well realised live dance shows ever. Especially considering the amount of dance acts who actually do "live" shows which aren't live at all, ie almost all of them except Daft Punk.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 28 October 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

they certainly blended and blurred the live set/DJ set thing - but Jaxx have done that too and i absolutely love it when they drop things like 'Yeah' into their set after messing around with it. Daft Punk did this with other house tunes at the time but having still not heard 'Alive 97' i don't know if that comes through in the mix.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 28 October 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

BJ songs I find emotionally charged/resonant:

Fly Life (original mix)
Samba Magic
Rendez-Vu
Jump N Shout
Always Be There
Romeo
Breakaway
Do Your Thing
Crazy Love
Right Here's The Spot
Plug It In
Cish Cash
If I Ever Recover
Feels Like Home

Daft Punk songs I find emotionally charged/resonant

Revolution 909
Da Funk
(Music Sounds Better With You)
One More Time

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 October 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Put ma down as another "x" next to Basement Jaxxx

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 28 October 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Something About Us???? Too Long?? So Much Love To Give? Together? Voyager? Face To Face?

I wouldn't include Flylife for the Jaxx, I consider that a banger, like Rollin' And Scratchin'.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that as far as vocal pop goes Daft Punk have really whacked the nail on the head hard, and you could never say Basement Jaxx have stuck to one area enough to do that.

I mean there's not a similar vibe to any of those Jaxx tracks you listed, which is probably a positive in some ways, but in a way Basement Jaxx are victims of their own ambition, it's difficult to say they ever really nailed anything because they've only ever tried their hand at making Basement Jaxx records.

In fact this makes them difficult to compare to anyone, to be honest.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 28 October 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

(sorry i must have the 'Burnin' video in my head too much)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 28 October 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread is a black hole, cuased by a clash between two equal forces of the universe. See you guys tomorrow.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 28 October 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

hey ronan, if you ever get around to making a cd like that, id be interested, too.

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 28 October 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, well I have "Homework","Discovery" and "Alive" but only have "Remedy" and "Kish Kash", no "Rooty", thus I would assume DP win. But that seems so unfair. I abstain from the vote.

Oh, and DP > BJ means exactly the same as BJ < DP. The first means DP is greater than BJ, the second that BJ is less than DP, ie. the same thing.

(I'm a mathematician.)

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 28 October 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

haha - who else read "DP > BJ" as "double penetration > blowjobs"?

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 28 October 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 28 October 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

basement jaxx. especially after i saw them live in the summer. this isn't to say they are better than daft punk live - i haven't seen them, but i must go with what i know.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 28 October 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I also saw the Bassment Jaxx live this summer and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen. They even brought out Dizzee Rascal for "Lucky Star". Daft Punk should be hounoured to be mentioned in the same breath, but they're clearly out of their league.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Friday, 29 October 2004 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Who would you rather see LIVE?
At this point, I'm voting Jaxx, a year ago it would've been Daft.
ILX is somewhat to blame.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 29 October 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to see DP live, mainly because I've seen the Jaxx live recently. The Jaxx do cool live things like 'Automatic' Remix, 'Living Pass' and other mashups, but they can sometimes be victims of their own cleverness ie turning 'Plug It In' into a full rock song on TOTP.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 29 October 2004 08:35 (twenty-one years ago)

bah basement jaxx live is a burlesque show sometimes.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 29 October 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

yeh but daft punk probably LIVE in a burlesque

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 29 October 2004 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

you could close basement jaxx or the chemical brothers and nobody would care

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 29 October 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

but the heart and soul, of gay pop house, is that one that goes "loveintheair"

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 29 October 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought DP lived in an over-50s unisex sauna.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 29 October 2004 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

haha - who else read "DP > BJ" as "double penetration > blowjobs"?

How could you read it as anything else?

I'm not sure about the Jaxx live thing. I REALLY enjoyed them when I saw them around "Remedy" time, but (and I know it's not the same thing ) watching the live performance from Glastonbury, watching Felix prance about thinking he was some kind-of rock-god was pretty embarrassing.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 29 October 2004 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Did he finish by shouting "My name is Petey! And I have BIG BALLS!"?

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 29 October 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Jaxx are a bit beret-wearing fusionista. Like they might have a shady past in acid jazz or something. Daft Punk's shady past is in making, er.. daft punk.

Also, Homework OWNED the year it came out in a way that Jaxx have never managed with one of their albums. That year you just heard tracks off the album EVERYWHERE played by EVERYONE. I can't ever remember a dance record having that much reach and universality. And it's an album!

I've never personally loved Discovery the way I loved Homework, but I'd happily say that I think Homework is probably the best full-length album of full-on dance music ever made, ergo Daft Punk by a country mile.

There's a thickness to their sound that's just so satisfying, and it has an abandonment in its formalism that the Jaxx lack in their carefully constructed ramshackleness.

+idiosyncracy +frenchness +videos...

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 29 October 2004 10:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Homework OWNED the year it came out in a way that Jaxx have never managed with one of their albums.

Nada, I heard most of Rooty in Manc and London circa 2001-2 without having any access to the CD itself.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 29 October 2004 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't forget, MTV have wuvved both just about equally.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 29 October 2004 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Remedy totally owned '99 (along with Surrender and Beaucoup Fish - for me anyway)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 29 October 2004 10:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I mean, 'Bingo Bango' alone was unstoppable.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 29 October 2004 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I still think Homework is a litle bit weak myself - some tracks are fantastcic, but others seem a little track-y and don't really seem to have much purpose outside a mix. Discovery on the other hand is such an amazingly coherent album.

As regards the Jaxx, although every track can stand on their own as good or great, but the albums don't really seem to have a great flow on them, certainly nothing to rival Discovery.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 29 October 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Possibly Remedy is the Jaxx album which comes closest to a "complete album".

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 29 October 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

no i think they're all pretty much complete but i suppose i prefer Remedy for that original impact and freshness it had

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 29 October 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Discovery is a concept album remember

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 29 October 2004 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

whereas Homework is by and large a DJ 'album', a stream of dancefloor experimentation - i'd be wary of evaluating it by traditional album-judging criteria as a result

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 29 October 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Aha, but - to me - this is a flaw. In the same way as a compilation of rare tracks (which may all be great on their own) sometimes won't really benefit from close grouping. When you have a selction of tracks which should really form part of a mix standing isolated, jarring, next to each other, I think the album suffers as a result.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 29 October 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"Cresendolls" and "Short Circuit" are a bit Princey, no?

Vinnie (vprabhu), Friday, 29 October 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

They're too generalised accross the 80s synthfunk spectrum to truly be purple.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 29 October 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

In the same way as a compilation of rare tracks (which may all be great on their own) sometimes won't really benefit from close grouping

i don't really recognise that criticism because it's purely a utilitarian issue for me - compilations are for convenience, mix compilations are designed to work as a (excuse cliche) 'journey'. albums can be both of those but there needn't be rules to adhere to ala 'here's the power intro - now the chilled bit, now let's build it up again - then down again' tho many albums follow that rule essentially (inc. all Jaxx albums i think). but Daft Punk have yet to make a conventional album and they probably never will.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 29 October 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Nevermind a new album.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 29 October 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i suppose BJ meddle with the conventional album format a little with the 'ludes, kinda like brief skits on hip hop albums only more surreal and out of step with the overall flow usually (for impact)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 29 October 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

still in the early days of my interest in these groups (which is why i started the thread, duh...), basement jaxx is in the lead.

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 29 October 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)
