i like it.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 28 October 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a good'un.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 28 October 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

it's heavy and has really long songs. it's good.

i heard it's not the best kyuss album though, but it's the only one i have.

i like queens of the stone age better. they are more poppy and catchy but still pretty heavy.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 28 October 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

it's good. not as good as "blues for the red sun" but better than the one after... heavy.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 28 October 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Good $3 used purchase :D

sometimes i like to pretend i am very small and warm (ex machina), Friday, 29 October 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Kyuss blows QOTSA out of the water, sorry. This is my favorite of theirs that I've heard (never heard the first one); Blues for the Red Sun is awesome but I think I like this one better.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 29 October 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Out of the three GOOD Kyuss recs I know this one least, I'll play it in a couple of days or so and get back to you. "Demon Cleaner" is a beautiful heavy throb baby, I remember that much.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 29 October 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah I haven't actually listened to this one in a while, mind (I've actually listened to to Blues for the Red Sun more recently.) I remember its got one of those cod-raga sounding songs where the guitarist drones an open string while playing the higher string up and down the neck. I love when metal bands do shit like that, maaaaan. It really trips me out. SOundgarden did it on "Searching With My Good Eye Closed". I think Monster Magnet did it on "Spine of God". (sort of yeah - I just checked - but fuck "Spine of God", it's all about "Snake Dance"!!! Oh man, I haven't listened to this record in TOOOOO long. "Go go go, I'm so FUCKIN' STOOOONED!!")

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 29 October 2004 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

That's really funny. I was just talking to my uncle today, and I mentioned Black Sabbath, thinking it was a band we'd bond on, and he recommended Kyuss. I sort of thought "Whatever, old man." Perhaps I will check them out after all.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 29 October 2004 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

It's their best album. "Supa Scoopa And Mighty Scoop" is oe of the greatest hard-rock tracks of all time.
My copy has all the tracks bunched together so for instance the first three songs are on one track, etc. This is highly annoying.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 29 October 2004 07:17 (twenty-one years ago)

awesome album: every single track is fantastic.
if it's worth anything to certain people, tool covered demon cleaner live once when they had scott reeder around.

ave satani (lemike), Friday, 29 October 2004 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

If you like rock music in any way this is unconditionally recommended. 'Gardenia' is one of the great Opening Tracks

DJ Mencap0))), Friday, 29 October 2004 07:57 (twenty-one years ago)

And Whitewater is one of the Alltime closers!

myopic_void (myopic_void), Friday, 29 October 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Warning!! Do not listen to this album at high volume while driving - you will go waaaay too fast, and attract the attention of your local law enforcement officers.

rob.b, Saturday, 30 October 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

it's great. listening to it loud all the way thru is like staying up all night on unfiltered cigarettes and black coffee and NOTHING ELSE. better than blues for the red sun. definitely.

drew, Sunday, 31 October 2004 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

It was the soundtrack to my Winter '94. Not one of my brightest eras, but I still look back on it anyway.

That Doo Song or whatever it's called is crap, tho'.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Sunday, 31 October 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i've got 'demon cleaner' cranking right now. and i've got a big grin on my face.

fantastical sounding record, and nary a lemon on the whole thing

Charlie Howard, Monday, 23 April 2007 11:58 (nineteen years ago)

One of the best albums ever by one of my favourite bands ever. I was listening to Kyuss last week actually.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Monday, 23 April 2007 12:00 (nineteen years ago)

Nice thread revival. Actually got to Kyuss after QOTSA, and I think it worked better (just like it worked well starting with "Songs for the Death" in turn) than if I'd gotten them chronologically.

I've been playing this album over and over again recently. It's one of the most enveloping heavy records of all time, the sound just blankets you.

Maybe it's me, but half of the songs on late 90s "modern rock" radio (and Incubus' entire catalog, in particular) seemed to be trying to copy "Space Cadet."

Brent, Monday, 23 April 2007 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
'space cadet' is much more intricate and mesmerising than i gave it credit for the first 50 or so listens. i think i used to sit through it waiting impatiently for 'demon cleaner' to kick in ;)

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 10 May 2007 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

I agree with Scott at the top.

Jeff Treppel, Thursday, 10 May 2007 23:23 (nineteen years ago)

there are some great vids of kyuss on youtube.

they rocked hard despite hommes' totally suburban fashion sense.

best kyuss hard rock album ever made.

I tried two other Kyuss albums. They didn't do what this does. Great record.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 16 March 2009 13:22 (seventeen years ago)

so I'd dig this shit huh

POLLonius (country matters), Monday, 16 March 2009 13:29 (seventeen years ago)

It's great, their best album and better than anything QOTSA have done, with the possible exception of Songs for the Deaf.

POLLonius (country matters), Monday, 16 March 2009 15:03 (seventeen years ago)

louis should hear all the albums (not Wretch, hardly anyone likes that) I used to have a bootleg of them playing Wretch live and it was way better than the official release.

Pfunkboy in blood drenched rabbit suit jamming in the woods (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 16 March 2009 15:30 (seventeen years ago)

Because you just heard of Kyuss today. Admit it.

ilxor, Monday, 16 March 2009 15:34 (seventeen years ago)

Except I bought Blues For The Red Sun when it was Kerrang no2 album of year in 1992.

I really love this kinda shit too. Screaming Trees had a tune like that on their Change Has Come ep.

Best hard-rock album ever recorded imho.

Hadn't listened to this in a long, long time until I blasted "Demon Cleaner" on headphones in the office just now. Face melting. I'm happy. No more work to be done today.

Mule, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 15:30 (thirteen years ago)

The thing about the latest update of itunes, is that I purposefully deleted Lick Doo off this album when I bought my itunes copy. But when I went to listen to this album on my computer the other week, it was sitting in there again as if to stay "you can download me again if you want to. Don't you want to give me a second chance?"

how's life, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 15:37 (thirteen years ago)

It really is a stupid way to end an otherwise stunning album, but I've still always kind of accepted it. Plus, being a teenager in the early 00s, I came to QotSA first, and "Lick Doo" always fitted with my impression of Homme and Oliveri as somewhat silly, though probably kinda dangerous, people.

Mule, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 15:43 (thirteen years ago)

It's mad gross.

I fucking love the guitar tones on this record.

Working night & day, I tried to stay awake... (Turrican), Friday, 27 January 2017 22:25 (nine years ago)

'Supa Scoopa' is indeed excellent, I particularly like the ending where the gap keeps getting longer and longer.

Working night & day, I tried to stay awake... (Turrican), Friday, 27 January 2017 22:28 (nine years ago)

I had this on mp3, then CD, then vinyl. I always assumed the vinyl would be three-sided, so you could get each 'program' on one side, preserving the continuity the band seemed to be implying by lumping the songs together into three tracks. But nope, they managed to cram 55 minutes onto two sides of a record and they split II in half. What the hell, Elektra, was a second LP that expensive to produce?

THAC0 Pastorius (Tom Violence), Saturday, 28 January 2017 03:19 (nine years ago)

Is that an original pressing or a recent re-press? Looking at Amazon, they show it as 2 discs? I'd figure Kyuss deluxe reissues would be vinyl crack as it seems this type of metal particularly fetishizes the format especially esoteric color pressings etc.

earlnash, Saturday, 28 January 2017 04:07 (nine years ago)

It's a repress, but the original pressing was the same way. Maybe there was a more recent repress (mine's from 2009 iirc)?

And with all the bass Kyuss records have on display, it's weird that they'd groove-cram, you lose bass that way, don't you?

THAC0 Pastorius (Tom Violence), Saturday, 28 January 2017 04:09 (nine years ago)

Mine's from 2014, but all versions on Discogs give it as a single LP.

THAC0 Pastorius (Tom Violence), Saturday, 28 January 2017 04:13 (nine years ago)

i've been playing this 3xCD box from Australia since 2000 and they sound awesome. all i've ever needed.

Well, when mastering for vinyl it's common to have quite a fair bit of bass rolled off the mixes anyway, but yeah, groove-cramming would not only result in further bass having to be rolled off but it would impact on the volune of the thing as well. Crammed records tend to be cut quieter... I've listened to records in the past that have been crammed where the clicks and pops of the vinyl have been louder than the music, and these have been records that have been in good condition.

Kyuss albums sound like they demand to be cut loud and with full bass, so utterly mystifying why they'd master the record in a way that doesn't bring the best out of the material.

Working night & day, I tried to stay awake... (Turrican), Saturday, 28 January 2017 20:57 (nine years ago)

It's stil magnificent. Homme sounds like he's playing a flamethrower. And damn, what a live band they were.
Back in the day I drove from Vegas to LA and stopped off in the valley. The sun was going down and the wind was like a fibrous wall. We stoped by the sign, had a beer and watched the slow woompf of the turbines.

Sunn O))) Brother Where Art Thou? (Chinaski), Sunday, 29 January 2017 13:50 (nine years ago)

two years pass...

I'm warding off the end of summer by listening to loads of Kyuss. I think I've decided Blues is the best album, even if there there are more standout moments on Sky Valley. Circus is a ragged thing and I think Homme had already checked out - not to mention Alfredo Hernandez was clearly an inferior drummer to Brant Bjork.

A tentative top 20

1) Whitewater
2) Freedom Run
3) Gardenia
4) 50 Million Year Trip
5) Spaceship Landing
6) Demon Cleaner
7) Odyssey
8) Phototropic
9) Supa Scoop and Mighty Scoop
10) Un Sandpiper
11) Allen's Wrench
12) Thumb
13) Caterpillar March
14) Fatso Forgotso
15) El Rodeo
16) Green Machine
17) Space Cadet
18) Katzenjammer
19) Apothecaries' Weight
20) Mondo Generator
