What proportion of your time do you spend listening at home, or going to the gigs of, your mates and acquaintances compared with listening to or watching bands that are strangers to you?

I spend far more time listening to or going to gigs by people I know than I used to. It's not 50:50 Strangers versus People I Know, but it might be getting on for 60:40.

Go back five years I knew two people who were in bands. Now I've lost count. ILX and the internet in general is largely to "blame" for this.

Blame in quotes as I don't regard this as a Bad Thing.

As far as going to gigs, I'd say at least half is watching people I know -- but that includes bands we play with at our own shows, accounting for a large percentage of the bands I see live.

When a band I know is good, I like them all the more and probably give them even more credit than they deserve. If a band I know isn't so good though, I find it sort of painful to listen, because I feel obliged to like it or something.

People I Know 15%
Strangers 85%

Most of the friends I know that are musical are kinda shitty. I know a lot of musicians, but very few do I actively support.

People I know: not that much -- although I'm not sure exactly where to draw the line. The guys who I lived with a few years ago, who used to practice in the basement: yeah, of course. But lately I've been really into this Chicago band The Changes. My brother is acquainted with the guitarist (they almost lived together), my own band shared a bill with them at CMJ, but I don't have any actual social relationship with them. Does that count?
