What if Dungen is singing about cyberspace and tuna sandwiches? Would you stop listening to it?

I find the recent Dungen record to be the best of 2H 2004 so far. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I don't know what they are singing about. Regressing against other prog rock lyrics, I imagine it's just dragons, goblins, morning mist etc etc but what if this is their record about Bayes rule or a spanner on pre-school fitness?

Does anyone speak Dungen's language and care to ruin the record for me? More generally, if a record kicks your ass and you don't understand the lyrics, should the content matter? Once Komeda went English I was put off a bit because they went from possibly interesting to awfully pedestrian in just a couple of crossed off Os and umlauts.

What if dragons, goblins, morning mist is the shit?

toothy philanthropist, Sunday, 31 October 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I think dragons, goblins and morning mist is the shit.

I think cyberspace / tuna sandwiches (think Rush or Decemberists) is not the shit.

I hope Dungen is the former, not the latter, so I can still think they are cool.

The Lion & the Marble

was totally a Mahavishnu Orchestra title, right? Or was it Ozric Tentacles? I can never remember.

caspar (caspar), Sunday, 31 October 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

what's wrong with tuna sandwiches?

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 31 October 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Ozric tentacles? Go back to wetlands.

They're singin about girls, DUH!

Nancy Boy (scottkundla), Sunday, 31 October 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I honestly don't care what anyone's singing about, generally. (Don't like this record much anyhow, by the way.) I'm drawn to music for the actual music and not for poetry. You could be uttering unintelligible gibberish and if it's expressive to me on a sonic level, that's perfectly fine.

Aaaah. Dungen. They're despised her in Sweden, everyone hates Dungen. He's never going to be a prophet in his own Hembygdsgård. But it made me very happy to hear that Other Music in NYC is packed with Dungen's latest masterpiece. And that Gustav Dungen and geetar god Reine Fiske and the other Dungen people played the Vice anniversary in New York and then walked around with bombshell-ish girlfriends etc.

Well, Dungen-Gustav does now and then sing about morning mist and sunrises, but not dragons and goblins. It's usually kinda sweet pop-lyrics in a kind of rural context. But you don't really need to know what he sings about. Erm... I think that the song called Panda is about his ex-girlfriend. The word "panda" is swedish slang for a female indiepop fanatic using lots of (smeared) eyeliner.

i like the record fine, but i never remember anything about it when it's not playing. Not the mark of a masterpiece, then.

B-b-but Rush do bring out a dragon on stage.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 06:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw them when they played at Other Music, and someone in the audience yelled, "What's the name of your band?" The lead singer replied, "doon-YEN... it means... 'what is up?'" Anyway, if there was an American band named "What is Up?" I'd have to punch them in the face.

(It is kind of a wussy cartoon dragon, mind you. You've convinced me to download Dungen though.)

Anyone else going to the show tonite in Philly...with Endless Boogie (or Endless Bourgie, I can't really decide)?! If I'm not mistaken they're playing under Ta Det Lugnt at Mercury Lounge tomorrow night, in case you miss them at Siren Fest.

worry not. their name most definitely does not mean "what is up."

everything i've read has suggested "dungen" means "grove" or something like that...i have no idea though...also, (regardless of what language they're in) the lyrics are hardly the point for a band with so many face-melting solos, are they?

Here's a complete Dungen lyrics site for those who are interested:

http://www.konstochvanligasaker.se/dungen

There's chords for a couple of songs too, more will probably be added. Spread the word!

they ought to start singing about cyberspace and tuna sandwiches. i expected loads of new material at last night's show and got hardly any. that said, the second half of "ta det lugnt" always sounds fresh because i haven't listened to it much.

i'm hopeful that they will go into full-on gentle giant/deep purple/procul harum mode for their next album.
