JESUS CHRIST, she is SO GOOD. "That's When I'll Stop Loving You" would probably secure a permanent position in my ever-shifting Top 100 Songs Ever. You know how she sounds like she's crying sometimes when she sings, but is still in control? How in every song, she really sounds like she feels whatever she's singing about -- and so strongly? God...so so good.

Point:

What would you consider equally intense and soulful and all? Who strikes you (vocalist, instrumentalist, whatever) as being extremely, extremely "expressive" and beautiful and amazing?

Oh, and Kevin Coyne too.

Have you heard her 'Your Precious Love'? Greatest recording of one of my all-time favourite songs, extraordinary talking and then the mightiest singing. Magnificent - her best, for me, and an all-time favourite of mine. (You should try to hear Geater Davis's version too.)

Lots of people strike me as comparably emotional, but not in identical ways - Al Green, James Carr, George Jones, Jimmy Cliff and so on. I'm not really sure how to answer this one. Is Lorraine Ellison's version of 'Stay With Me Baby' something like what you're after?

Yeah, "For Your Precious Love" is incredible. I really like everything I've heard of hers. Wish she'd had time to record more..

There's nothing in particular that I'm after. I'm just curious which musicians strike people as equally powerful and convincing performers. (And wanted to squeal excitedly about Linda.)

What was her background? i have the For your precious love LP and on the cover she appears to have a mark on her forehead like Hindu women often do.

Doesn't look that much like the only photo of her I have, though as that is almost full face it's hard to be sure. Typical soul background, gospel with her family as the Jones Singers, various labels through the '60s, born in Newark in 1944, died while Your Precious Love was out in 1972.
