Don't think this has been done, maybe -- anyway, used to be in the Saints way back when, left Chris Bailey to his own devices early on and has since released about eight million albums and shown himself to be an underappreciated genius. Right now I'm listening to the Character Assassination album that I picked up recently and wondering how in the world I got to this point without hearing it before. A one-man Go-Betweens? A calmer Robert Smith? What do you all think?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Or am I alone here?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Search: 'Black Ticket Day', 'Honey Steel's Gold', 'Serene Machine' and 'Today Wonder'. All completely brilliant and incredibly overlooked - quite a bit better than 'Character Assassination' imo. 'Everybody's Got To' is supposed to be good aswell, but I haven't got around to buying it yet. 'Rooms of the Magnificent' and 'Electrical Storm' were two of his earliest solo albums and not that good (by his standards anyway).

Also recommended are one of his other groups, The Aints. I think 'Autocannibalism' and 'Ascension' are the only two studio albums they made, and they're both amazing. Much heavier than his solo stuff, with some pretty furious saxophony going down. I haven't yet heard anything by The Laughing Clowns (yet another of his groups), but hopefully will do one day.

A calmer Robert Smith?! Nah, he's a lot better than that.

A calmer Robert Smith?! Nah, he's a lot better than that.

Others' words rather than mine, but a lot of people often remark on the vocal similarity. Never saw it myself (then again, I never saw the connection between Ian McCulloch and Jim Morrison and even my *dad* said something about that!). I wouldn't say better than Robert, of course. ;-) But I will say getting up there, actually. And I'm currently listening to Honey Steel's Gold right now and wondering if "Everything I've Got Belongs To You" is the best love song ever.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The first Laughing Clowns album is pretty good as well. Obviously more jazz-nick than most would care for but, really, his strong songwriting style is evident throughout.

philT, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

"Honey Steels Gold" is a great record. I adore a lot of the Laughing Clowns stuff too, although some is quite hard going. "Eternally Yours" is of course a total classic.

Put it this way, he hasn't put out very much outright dud work, but when you're as prolific as he, it tends to not be entirely classic either.

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Can't add much - Honey Steels Gold and Black Ticket Day are fantastic, most of his other work worth hearing.

He's playing this weekend in Melbourne, I think I might go and take a look. Anyway, in a couple of street press interviews he revealed that there will be a Saints box set (4 CDs, the first three albums with better remastering than the Raven comp + a live show recorded in London in '78) and a Laughing Clowns box (3 CDs, with everything they did) coming out around July-September. I cannot wait for that Clowns box.

evrytime i saw him in the 80's he seemed to get thicker, eyes receding, sweatier - like he had a baaad cough syrup addiction. his voice is kind of an aquired taste.

I saw Edmund with Jeffery Wegener (original Laughing Clowns drummer) and Peter Oxley (Sunnyboys) a few montghs ago. Aside from the brilliant music what was most noticeable was his pelasant demeanour. He even smiled and occassionally acknowledged the crowd in a. Must be the old age. But seriously, it was a pleasure to see Wgeenr perform as I was too young to ever catch the Clowns.

The Laughing Clowns box set Cruel But Fair is an excellent collection of all their Laughing Clowns material.

I am curious about the new three CD compilation he's put out. Seems like half of his discs ARE comps.

wegener = amazing drummer. the outtake of 'eternally yours' on that 12" (i think called "times not hit but missed") is phenomenal

I also saw one of those trio shows with wegener and oxley and - apart from the bit where ed totally forgot the words to 'la di doh' at the crucial point where all the instruments had dropped our (the band and the crowd nearly died laughing) - they were fantastic. he's dabbled in so many styles you forget just how amazing he is when it comes down to playing electric guitar really loud!

I just got hold of the Laughing Clowns box and now I'm wondering what the hell my problem was for not getting this sooner.

I'm going to shout out for Frontierland - for a "everything and the kitchen sink production" album it's pretty wonderful (and has some of his best singing I think).

That's one of the ones I snagged on my trip in 2002, for which I am grateful. I've got about nine solo albums now, a good number.

I am curious about the new three CD compilation he's put out.

I have this, it's pretty good and has material from across his solo stuff (skips the mid-80s albums, but some of the songs from those pop up in live versions). BUT if you have lots of his stuff already you probably wouldn't need it. good starter pack for those who've been too lazy to keep up with the albums though.

The Laughing Clowns box is unbelievable - utter genius from beginning to end. That's how music should be made - fierce, passionate, on the ragged edge of collapse..
What a great guitarist too - he got an amazing tone from that strat (I'd swear it was a tele at times) - listen to Winter's Way or Eternally Yours. My favourite tho is the 'finger-slide' guitar on No Words Of Honour - beautiful!
Currently also loving the 3rd Saints album.

Laughing Clowns = greatest Australian group. The box set is crucial. I just interviewed Ed about the Clowns, he was very funny in his droll way. He also mentioned some amazing Aints live recordings he'd just uncovered. Hopefully 'Linda and Abilene' is on there (greatest 'lost' Kuepper track ever.)

I actually saw Wegener play as the drummer for Deb Cavallero/Dragster in Adelaide in the late 1990s/early 2000s, I think it was...

jon dale, Friday, 12 May 2006 09:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Wegener, truly amazing drumming in The Laughing Clowns, truly awful during his stint in the latter day Saints. Oh, and he's a fucking psycho.

OTM. The only possible complaint about the 3CD set [pedantry alert!] is that the track ordering follows no pattern discernible to mere mortals.

Got the Laughing Clowns box on the weekend. It's incredible.

I was really starting to miss the "Mr Udditch-Schmudditch" LP, having long ago worn out the tape I made of it, years ago (from a mate's uncle's copy - he wouldn't leave the room while we recorded it).

I'm happy with the way they've rearranged the tracks. I find chronological compilations a bit boring, sometimes; I'd rather there be some attempt to make each disc well-paced in its own right, which seems to have worked here.

I really don't get the comparisons between Ed's voice and Robert Smith's. Apart from the fact that they annoy some people.

scriblerus (mike lynch), Monday, 4 September 2006 08:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Craig Smith (csbx), Monday, 4 September 2006 12:12 (seventeen years ago) link

so Electrical Storm is supposed to be the one where he sounds like Smith? That's my favourite of the solo albums, and I still can't see it.

scriblerus (mike lynch), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 00:44 (seventeen years ago) link

I can hear it in the phrasing and stuff actually, so I see where ned is coming from. bob has a sort of high, occasionally shrill quality to his voice that you won't find with ed, though.

genital hyphys (haitch), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 01:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Hmmm - maybe the difference in their attitudes and lyrics, and the fact that I like Ed much, much more than Robert, is blinding me to the similarities.

For me the difference is that the Cure are all aboutregression and childishness. For example:

Ed: "I won't shed tears over spilled and sour milk"
Robert: "Boys don't cry"

Same basic sentiment, very different way of putting it.

Just listening to "Blind Girl Stripper", one of the shortest 10 minute epics ever.

I loved the Saints for years and followed Chris Bailey but only last year did I reacquaint myself with Ed Kuepper's work and what an epiphany it was. Holy crap! I must admit I find his back catalogue a little daunting and have satisfied myself with the excellent 3-CD _This Is The Magic Mile_ retrospective along with _Legendary Bully_ and _The Butterfly Net_, two other best-ofs with very little overlap.

Three new live albums are available off of his MySpace page and reasonably priced for AUS->US shipping. Think he's selling these direct as my PayPal went to "Edmund Kuepper."

Still annoyed that he had to drop out of the US leg of the Nick Cave tour. Spiritualized is not a substitute (and that's the only time you'll hear me say that). The recordings from the Europe leg are amazing.

Saw him last night with a really very good band… Was super great to see EK looking like a grizzled old member of Hawkwind moving easily between well-crafted pop songs and slow burn proggy jams, with a nice crunchy guitar tone throughout.

A shame that this incarnation is unlikely to tour internationally - I think he would win a lot of new fans (or at least consolidate some old ones). It takes a lot of velocity (and cash) to overcome the tyranny of distance in Australia.

Re S/D - would highly recommend the recent reissue of Honey Steel’s Gold (1990), his best solo LP now finally on spotify. Excellent band featuring Chris Abrahams of The Necks and a nice mix of concise tunes and stretched-out epics. Not quite like anything else but it might sit in broadly the same territory as Spirit of Eden?

Also good - Rooms of the Magnificent, Today Wonder, Jean Lee & the Yellow Dog.

Laughing Clowns’ Law of Nature has also been reissued, not a bad entry point for that band & features Eternally Yours - their most iconic song and a great one too.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 12 April 2024 00:45 (one month ago) link

Yeah... definitely one of the greatest collected works of all time - every song has something exceptional going on and the level of invention in the playing and arrangements is just off the scale - not a starter slope though! It's so dense that it takes a lot of investment to get into I think? At least to my ears it took a while to click... I might not even have tried except that I saw Kuepper play a gig with Jeff Wegener (Clowns drummer for those that don't know) and it was so exceptional that I was instantly obsessed - still hands down the best live drummer I have ever seen in any context ever
