Gang of Four Reunite, Plan January Tour!

Rob Harvilla reports:
Rejoice: The rapture has arrived for those unimpressed by the arrival of The Rapture! The original Gang of Four lineup-- Andy Gill, Jon King, Dave Allen, and Hugo Burnham-- has announced a string of January shows in the UK, officially marking (fanfare, please!) THE REUNION. Though Gill and King reformed temporarily in the early 90s for a couple of okay records and some victory-lap tourin', the classic GoF quartet hasn't graced a stage since 1981. There's no word from bandleader Gill's camp yet about a U.S. tour, just five Brit dates to whet yer appetites. Observe:

01-23 - Manchester, England - Academy
01-24 - Leeds, England - Leeds University
01-25 - Bristol, England - Academy
01-27 - Birmingham, England - Academy
01-28 - London, England - Shepherd's Bush Empire

Most GoF obsessives are understandably thrilled by this news; others remain skeptical, including a few random fans of garage-punkers The Futureheads, despite the fact that Gill produced the band's 2004 debut record. (Andy's also worked with Killing Joke, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Michael Hutchence.) "NOOOOOO," declared Southern Matt, a poster on the TheFutureheads.com forum. "More old gits return to ruin the legend and all my ideas of what they once were. I pray that I never see a single picture or hear a single note. I hate reunions." When someone pointed out the relatively un-embarassing Pixies 2004 juggernaut, he added that caveat that "they were never really lookers anyway, so the oldness didn't spoil the memories."

Still: What the fuck? Was Gang of Four not thee most anti-capitalist band on the planet? How will they sing those lines and still sleep at night? And will they make it through all this ungobbed? We at Pitchfork will dutifully keep you abreast.

THE HORROR

THE HORROR, Tuesday, 16 November 2004 10:34 (nineteen years ago) link

But Andy Gill didn't produce the Futureheads album. Paul Epworth did. Gill did produce the 'First Day' single, though, which was why I got somewhat confused when I reviewed the album for Stylus and mistakenly declared that he'd done the album (curse linenote checking failure).

Yeah that seems like a silly excuse - look at Wire! Besides I'm tired of this "oh no-they did it for money" thing. Don't most people do things for money? Sure, I get out of bed in the morning and go to work for the sheer fun of it.

Those retirement tours...guess they didn't start that 401 K back in the day. Oh well, for those '78-82ers you take what you can get. I'm still bitter that I was only 9 in 1980.

I saw Hugo Burnham on stage w/ Mission of Burma in Boston backing in '02. He didn't look to me to be in the sort of shape that would have him ready to play a full set.

But, FWIW, I'M TOTALLY PSYCHED! (Imagine Brak screeching that, if you please.)

I'm crossing my fingers but I'm not sure if bringing back an out-of-shape rhythm section is actually gonna bring back the magic. Plus I'd like to think the guys have outgrown their collegiate neuroses!

http://www.guardian.co.uk/arts/fridayreview/story/0,12102,1384337,00.html

There will be no new material. However, a planned tribute-style album will see fans like Franz Ferdinand and Hot Hot Heat remixing the original recordings.

Yikes.

Of note to ILMers: Once Gill and Allen had a fist fight after the bassist placed his foot on a monitor, which Gill perceived as "rockist".

Vic Funk, Friday, 7 January 2005 22:06 (nineteen years ago) link

oh my.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 January 2005 22:13 (nineteen years ago) link

did Gill really use the word "rockist"? (is this a recent thing? I mean, or do they still have fistfights even after reuniting? how silly)

anyway this is obviously horrible. Unless all they do is play "I Love a Man in a Uniform" for half an hour and then leave the stage.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 7 January 2005 22:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Remixes? OH God, please no.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Friday, 7 January 2005 22:17 (nineteen years ago) link

okay, read the article - that "rockist" thing sounds highly dubious to me. Was the term "rockist" even around pre-ILM? I certainly never saw it anywhere...

x-post

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 7 January 2005 22:18 (nineteen years ago) link

I highly doubt he said "rockist" at the time.

He probably said something like, "Like, dude, you look like a fucking douchebag when you do that. Quit it. And give me a bite of that sandwich, I'm hella hungry."

the term "rockist" existed before Gang of Four, much less ILM

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 7 January 2005 23:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Matos is totally true to the original form of the word "rockist" when he uses it, maaaaaan.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 7 January 2005 23:30 (nineteen years ago) link

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 7 January 2005 23:31 (nineteen years ago) link

three weeks pass...
Anyone seen them yet? Vary uh, variable.

Saw them in Birmingham tonight, rhythm section the best thing, really, King's vocals were rasping a lot and Gill was doing louche speak-y deliveries instead of shouting 'THERE MAY BE OIL' with the required gusto.

They did Damaged Goods at the end and it sounded great even though it was a bit U2, and then they did I Found That Essence Rare and it sounded like shit, and they were only on for 70 minutes and it cost £19.

Ferg, Ah (Ferg), Friday, 28 January 2005 00:26 (nineteen years ago) link

Andy Gill looked unnervingly like Gordon Brown dozing off in parliament at points.

Also, melodica only made one appearance.

Ferg, Ah (Ferg), Friday, 28 January 2005 00:29 (nineteen years ago) link

I saw Gang of Four in Leeds they really were very very good it was like watching a proper band unlike The Departure who supported, they were just clueless really. Gang of Four had such a good bass sound but I got all confused by the second song they played 'cos I was like erm isn't this Chant No 1 by Spandau Ballet? It wasn't, obviously. I downloaded Chant No 1 today and yeh it doe sound a lot lke Gang of Four but with horns and more wanky but still ace which is really wrong cos they done True which is the uber wankest. I think the guitarist would make a good How 2 presenter but with added cod Marxism.

Spandau Ballet and Gang of Four! Bryan Ferry leading paunchy anarchists! I need a cheeseburger to go...this much is true.

A reunion tour rarely excites me, but since Gof4 was one of my all-time faves, I'm interested, but mostly cuz I've seen them 5 times, but never with Dave Allen on bass.

What's this about a new album? http://www.gangoffour.co.uk/

I wonder what their US dates will look like. I figure 5 or 6 shows apart from that Couchella (sp?) thang in CA.

GANG OF FOUR
US TOUR DATES ANNOUNCED

For years promoters and fans have begged them. Now Gang of Four, the definitive punk-funk, post-punk agitators, have finally acquiesced to public demand. They have reformed in their original line-up and this past January they performed a string of UK shows for the first time since 1981 to mass critical acclaim:

“They immediately reclaimed the meticulous ferocity that made the Gang of Four one of postpunk’s most influential bands”. -(New York Times)

“Gang of Four are really rather excellent…(their) music hasn’t aged in the slightest…the likes of ‘Damaged Goods’ and ‘Natural’s Not In It’ are still spikily relevant.” (NME)

“Gang of Four are perhaps the single most compelling case that what followed punk was far more interesting than punk itself.” (Independent On Sunday, ABC)

“they exude intensity and their sound remains one of rock’s strongest flavours” (Mail On Sunday)

The band, icons and inspiration for many of the world's biggest acts (REM, U2, Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers), and who perhaps more than any other, serve as direct stylistic antecedents of today’s guitar heroes (step forward Franz Ferdinand, Futureheads, The Rapture, Radio 4, Liars et al), have not been seen in this formation since 1981. Jon King (vocals), Andy Gill (guitar and vocals), Dave Allen (bass) and Hugo Burnham (drums) had by then been responsible for 1978’s epochal ‘Damaged Goods’ debut EP, as well as the genre-defining ‘Entertainment’ album (1979) and its follow-up ‘Solid Gold’.

Since then there has never been a time when ‘Natural's Not In It' and ‘Love Like Anthrax’ haven’t sounded like some of the most vital and coldly passionate records ever made, but recently the band who always sounded 20 years ahead of their time have finally found the world catching up and catching on. Consequentially, it is most timely that Andy Gill has come out from behind the producer’s chair of such globe bestriding rock behemoths as The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Killing Joke, Futureheads, Michael Hutchence, Bono, Jesus Lizard, to once again strap on his trusty Stratocaster.

Gang of Four have just finished work on a new double disc set which will be released to coincide with US tour dates. More information to follow soon.

"new" album details revealed via pitchfork (who themselves pinched it from the BBC):

Around the time of the tour (nothing is firm yet) the band will make their reunion complete with a double-disc set of semi-new music. According to a BBC interview with Andy Gill, one disc will have re-recorded versions of old songs-- "Predominantly from the first three albums"-- while the second will consist of remixes by some of Gang of Four's artistic successors. Of the latter disc, Gill said, "At this point there's Bloc Party are doing one, Franz Ferdinand, Futureheads are having a go at a track, Hot Hot Heat, Massive Attack, and we're gonna be talking to Chili Peppers and REM." (Flea is an avowed fan of Dave Allen's bass stylings, and Michael Stipe was heard to drop an a capella verse from "We Live As We Dream, Alone" on REM's Green tour back in the day.)

Anticipating the massive skepticism which would greet their attempts to revisit history, Gill elaborated somewhat on the concept: "The songs were fantastic, but I think there were some holes in the sound of it. I mean, actually, I think we're doing it even more simply than we did at the time-- there's literally no overdubs."

haitch (haitch), Thursday, 3 March 2005 03:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Ummm. Speaking of the anti-capatalist bent, I couldn't help but notice that the local venue is a Clear Channel venue. If this is a CC tour, my aging punk-rock sensibilities will once again be kicked in the throat. Am I the only one who pays attention to these things? My running three-year Clear Channel boycott is keeping me from seeing yet another band I would die to see... and in case you were wondering, First Avenue is only 3 blocks away, non-CC, and could probably use the money.
