geeta (geeta), Friday, 19 November 2004 07:02 (twenty-one years ago)

who the hell are they?

cooba, Friday, 19 November 2004 07:06 (twenty-one years ago)

ASK THAT!

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 19 November 2004 07:09 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, ask them who the hell they are.

actually ask them if they approach each record with an overall idea or if its made up as they go along. or a bit of both.

bulbs (bulbs), Friday, 19 November 2004 07:12 (twenty-one years ago)

dude! awesome gig, geeta. should be a lot of fun. Don't expect too many straight answers. I would ask them their opinion on the current state of internet file-sharing, especially as it refracts back upon their penchant for limited-edition and otherwise hard-to-find records. Debates about the ethics of the whole thing vis-a-vis this self-consciously obscurantist group continue to flare up over on their yahoo group (scott colburn himself has weighed in from time-to-time.) It might be nice to get their particular take on the whole thing, once and for all (if you can get it.) and that reminds me, maybe asking about Colburn, and what their working relationship with him has added, and so forth, might be an interesting question. And be sure to ask them about Zappa.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 19 November 2004 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

also ask them about Indians scattered on dawn's highway bleeding. And the death of Yasser Arafat.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 19 November 2004 07:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Ask them to confirm/deny/respond to the rumors of manipulation surrounding the "Broken Hearted Dragonflies" field recording CD. I thought it was just raw, then bought and wondered how the hell it could be untreated, then David Toop straight up accused them of messing with it or adding a synth swoop on top. I'm really genuinely curious about this.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 19 November 2004 08:21 (twenty-one years ago)

the sun city girls didn't make "broken hearted dragonflies" -- the just released it on sublime frequencies. Tucker Martine created the "audio document." as for if its real or not -- does it matter?

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 19 November 2004 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

ASK THEM WHY CDS SO EXPENSIVE

Does John Coltrane Dream of a Merry-go-round? (ex machina), Friday, 19 November 2004 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, I thought of another one, ask them about that Red Sox victory: if it foretells some kinda millennial period. ask Alan anyway; I know he's a big sports fan; that ought to set him off...

Having released it they might have some insight into the recording and might be willing to talk about it, also, artists are frequently shy or "in character" when the direct topic is their own work, so being asked about tangentially related stuff can relax them or make them break out of stock "tour stories" mode. Jeez. Simmer down. And as for "does a manipulated field recording matter" . . . . In the cosmic scheme o' things? Not a whit. In relation to the conditions of reception with which we listen to something as a "field recording" vs. the conditions of reception with which we listen to "collage" or "music" or "radio play" etc. etc.? Of course it matters. When you listen to Chris Watson's killer sub bass rumble and know that it's an unedited (if, yes, mastered) recording of a cheetah purring, that is a totally different experience of listening than hearing it and having him say, oh yeah, actually, just fucking with you, that's an oscillator sweep. Presumably things marketed as field recordings are exactly that.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 19 November 2004 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

all field recordings are manipulations of sound by the person recording it by their very choice of what they decide to preserve and how it is presented. the idea of any field recording being an accurate representation of anything is false. a field recording is about the person making the recording and not what he or she is recording.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 19 November 2004 08:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, of course. None of which includes playing a synthesizer on top and calling that a field recording too. I think there's obviously choices being made, and they are artistic choices, in what mic you use, when to start and stop, how to master. But that doesn't address the issue here.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 19 November 2004 08:50 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost - it's no different than the inquiring about the possible use of effects to treat the recordings released on the Brian Jones presents: The Pipes of Pan at Jajouka to make them more "psychedelic." it's a totally valid question to ask if there are suspicions abound.

&, Friday, 19 November 2004 09:11 (twenty-one years ago)

is the disc purported to be of butterflies?

bulbs (bulbs), Friday, 19 November 2004 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Ask them "and would you like that supersized, sir?"

hector savage, Friday, 19 November 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Please tell them that "11 East Ashland" in Phoenix just closed and will be demolished.

They may launch into stories about the good ol' days.

I think the web address is 11eashland.com

J. J. James (jjjames), Friday, 19 November 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

if this hasn't already happened:

I'd ask them about how they (or alan) feel about the 'success' of the sublime frequencies series (it seems to me they got far more attention placed on them recently through it?).

I'd also ask them about how their UK gig (at ATP) went and how about playing in europe again?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 19 November 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Julio, I've heard rumours that they might be back sooner rather than later...

NickB (NickB), Friday, 19 November 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

oh good! I hope geeta can actually clear up any 'rumours' tho'.

(and I'd def ask about that rec Toop reviewed)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 19 November 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Ask them about the field recordings, because I am really interested. Also ask them whether they agree with Drew or Jack more in the philosophy of field recordings.

3underscore (___), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I ain't gonna play.

Acme (acme), Saturday, 20 November 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

For the record, I don't have an opinion either way about the actual authenticity of the CD in question, it's just been raised in enough places as a question that I figured it might make a juicy interview query. I have zero beef with Tucker Martin or the S.C.G., but it just sounded like it could lead to a good chat: about what field recordings are, about the popularity of the sub. frequencies CDs, yadda yadda
