whats the most youve ever spent on a cd?

has this thread been done before? i dont know! who cares? do it again!

i just spent $43 (s&h included) for a copy of the boredoms' super roots 7. it is the most ive spent on a cd before. close contenders and other notables are as follows:

$34 - left banke compilation (gift for gf)
$31 - boredoms seadrum+house of sun
$28 - the pop group - y
$25 - my bloody valentine - you made me realise cdep
$20 - my bloody valentine - feed me with your kiss cdep

how about you? my friend spent $48 on the holy bible by the manic st preachers 6 years ago, only to turn around and sell it (the insanely sought-after canadian version, it was...) 2 years ago for almost $500. that was a brilliant investment. i guess im mostly interested in things you bought to listen to, not just to resell for profit, although that is an interesting topic, too. so, yeah - do both.

i hope this doesnt cheapen anything for anyone. im not so mercantile, im just curious.

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 04:59 (twenty-one years ago)

super roots 7 worth it though!

Does John Coltrane Dream of a Merry-go-round? (ex machina), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 05:01 (twenty-one years ago)

$45ish for the primitives "lazy 86-88"

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 05:03 (twenty-one years ago)

(AUD)

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 05:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Boredoms for me, too, VCN for about $35 when it was still Japan-only. Super Roots 7 only set me back $19.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 05:06 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe $18 for the first Ash Ra Tempel album? Some double albums might surpass that. I think the newish Pearls Before Swine double CD was like $19 before tax, but, that's a double.

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 05:07 (twenty-one years ago)

whats the most youve ever spent on a cdr?

acid mothers temple fans?

Does John Coltrane Dream of a Merry-go-round? (ex machina), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 05:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i have probably spent like $10 on a cdr before. but most are under 5!

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 05:10 (twenty-one years ago)

most on a cdr = $40, unintentionally from some fraudulent cunt on ebay.

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

What happened?

Pangolino (ricki spaghetti), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

HAHAHA, OW

Does John Coltrane Dream of a Merry-go-round? (ex machina), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 05:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Those Volume compilations have cost me around $45AUD new once or twice. Also a Japanese CD comp called "4AD 1986" or something similar, which has a bunch of 4AD eps from the time that arent on CD elswwhere - Frasier Chorus, Throwing Muses, Wolfgang Press and MARRS. I think that one were $40+.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)

it was a 60s comp of some description, the guy swore black and blue afterwards that it wasn't a cdr. cocksucker.

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 05:24 (twenty-one years ago)

That bites. I once traded a hard-to-find Jerry Goldsmith CD with a guy who sent me a CDR in return, including an extra CDR made from the CD I'd just sent (as, what, an insult?), but it didn't cost that much.

Pangolino (ricki spaghetti), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Gawd, living in Japan, I've spent over $20 more times than I want to think about.

I payed about $30 recently for the Tusk and The Heart of the Congos reissues. Both were worth it.

supercub, Wednesday, 24 November 2004 05:43 (twenty-one years ago)

$26.99, Young Marble Giants -- not five months before it was re-released domestically (d'oh).

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 05:55 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a couple of cds i'd spend up to A$60+ on.. but i'm pretty sure that's as high as i'd go.

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 05:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Boredoms for me, too, VCN for about $35 when it was still Japan-only.

Shit, I had to pay about $85 for mine (about 6 months before the jewel case version came out). It came with a t-shirt and an exclusive EP (better than Super Roots 7 IMO).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 05:59 (twenty-one years ago)

$20+ is very common in Canada for regular releases. I paid $50 for the album Koyo Habib by Aisha Kandisha's Jarring Effects from CDPlus. You never know how much will be added to the cost when when a cd crosses the border. If it ever arrives, this will be the most expensive cd I ever bought.

todd (todd), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I've spent more significant money on LPs, fo reals... that said, i could sell back a lot of it and make more moneys

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 06:13 (twenty-one years ago)

...Forty something dollars on Felt's "Forever Breathes The Lonely Word". Bought a few years ago, before the reissue series.

CL, Wednesday, 24 November 2004 06:32 (twenty-one years ago)

$38 for the taj mahal travellers 2cd on p-vine. worth it.

as for single cds, maybe $27-28 at some point. maybe the jacks "vacant world" or something.

my girlfriend paid almost $30 for the boot version of the two silver apples albums on trc, maybe 10 years ago? seems like import cds have gotten cheaper since then. except for current 93 albums.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 07:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i spent $30 on Momus' LIttle Red Songbook w/ "Walter Carlos" on eBay. found it a month later in a store, still sealed, for $7.99. (bought it again)

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

FElt, again; I spent $50 on a CD of Bubblegum Perfume a few years ago

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 07:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I just spend $20.50 on Quique by seefeel, although of course with the current dollar rate, that is only about 20p... Most ever spent on a single package is just under £40 on the first nuggets box

Robin Goad (rgoad), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

this honour goes out to Jo Zippers American Whip album - the original black cover promo album .. during the year it sat shelved i decided i had to get on board the ebay madness .. i think i got up to £32 for it. painful at the time as this is totally out of character for me ..

mark e (mark e), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 08:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i bought a copy of that, but i think it was more like US$16

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

by time i got up to speed the heat was on and demand was roaring .. but i succumbed ..

no regrets though.

mark e (mark e), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 08:36 (twenty-one years ago)

It was on the Vanity 6 CD.. I'm not telling anyone how much I payed for it.

donut christ (donut), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

It was quick and nasty. we ended up doing lines on the case. I was in a weird phase in my life.

donut christ (donut), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

eck! This thread makes me glad to be in the UK. That first list, the last three, not one of them did I pay more than $5 for.

My entry here? £40 for Saint Etienne "I want to paint". That's quite good actually.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 09:03 (twenty-one years ago)

It was almost certainly the Japanese import of Lick My Decals Off Baby. Fortunately I have erased from my memory all recollection of how much that cost.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

somewhere between £17 and £19 for the double CD of Goldie's 'Timeless'

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I ended up paying £32 for Friends Again's trapped and unwrapped because I got stung for import duty when it came from Amazon.com.
It's not very good.

Adam Faithless (Adam Faithless), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Friends Again? Wasn't that the geezer that was in Love & Money?

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

32 quid on Cornelius - 69/96's pink vinyl covered, fancy papered booklet ltd. ed and the same for V/A - Anchor, Trattoria Records' 3CD menu retrospective/farewell release. Worth it.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

(box sets don't count)

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

X-Post Friends Again - that's right, James Grant. FA were more Postcardy and less rawk, the singles were tip-top, especially Honey At The Core, but the album's marred by a typically horrid '80s production.

Adam Faithless (Adam Faithless), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

ooo Love and Money. damn thats a name from my past. i have filed away their first lp on cd .. haven't heard that in years .. recall it being prime big 80's production though ..
'take a ride ..'

mark e (mark e), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I recently bought two CDs by Japanese singer UA - Dorobou and Sun. Each was $34.75 after tax.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I spent $45 on "Got No Bread, No Milk, No Money, But We Sure Got a Lot of Love," by James Talley because I couldn't find it anywhere else. I'm sure it's readily available by now.
I spent the same on the 2-CD "Oceans of Sound" (David Toop-produced comp) for the same reason.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know where most of you live, so this is all a bit confusing (I don't know whether people are talking US, Canadian, Aus or NZ dollars)

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

£28 on Outernational by Billy McKenzie, which sounds expensive but I've seen it go for £100+ on ebay.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I paid big-time ($20.00 AUS)for a second-hand (read ex-radio station copy that was obviously stolen as it had station ident scrubbed out on cover) for the orignal CD EP (now long-deleted) "U2" by Negativland.

Just don't tell Island Records okay!

herbalizer12 (herbalizer12), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

$32 - promotional DJ copy of Sneaker Pimps - Becoming Remixed when I was thirteen. The only investment I've made like that since was $28 also for The Pop Group's Y (which was worth it).

Ian Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow I had no Idea the Pop Group CD was such in demand.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Did one of you people buy The Raincoats 'Odyshape' CD from me on amazon last night for $35?

ianinportland (ianinportland), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

$15 on gemm for that! i was quite proud of that one...

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Most recently I bought that left banke compilation for around $27. I ended up selling it for $60 though. Other than that, I think the most I have spent for a single disc is $30 for that Richard Thompson '1000 Years of Music' CD. It was for my Dad last xmas.

ianinportland (ianinportland), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

God, I forgot I spent more than $30 on Let's Active's "Afoot," only to see it re-released a month later.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

They featured in the top 100 albums of the 90's poll. I'm sure you're familiar with them, Stewart. xpost

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

never!

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Are people trying to guess what I'm bidding on?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

4 h 17m now.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"They featured in the top 100 albums of the 90's poll. I'm sure you're familiar with them, Stewart."

Stop it! No clues or you'll spoil the surprise!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"Are people trying to guess what I'm bidding on?"

No! I want it to be a surprise, damn it!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

just realised. i have on more hour online. that means i'm in for a sleepness night. its like some record collectors version of 24 ..

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

You people are very weird.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, if you email me yr mobile number, I'll text you at 8.30pm!

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

nah. i like living on the edge .. and will make my journey to work special.

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a CD single too. I feel physically sick.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG .. and you are telling us this ..
you have money to burn sir.

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't. That's what's making me sick.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

You weren't expecting it to go this high, and you now regret putting a high bid in, yeah?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"You people are very weird."

It's taken you how long to notice this?

Besides, we're not the ones who are contemplating spending $50 on a CD single - so what do you think gives you the right to call us weird?!?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

No. It was at $50 when I put the bid in. I consulted girlfriend and friends and stuff and opinion was unanimous - "you want this lots - GET IT WHATEVER!" Bastards all.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

once its all sorted .. if i have it in my chunck of stuff you are more then welcome to it for half of what they sell it for on ebay .. if not less. though the chances are somewhat slim i suspect ..

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not like I don't already have the music off this CD single at 192kbps MP3. And have had it for a good while. And have written about it. And stuff.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Are girlfriend and friends and stuff going to help you pay for it?

Is there a possibility they're going to wait 'til you've parted with your hard-earned and then take the piss unmercifully?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't worry Nick, just bid £1,000,000. You can be sure of winning that way.

I won an auction with 6 seconds to spare yesterday. (Seeds IV Punk on vinyl).

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasn't £1,000,000 just a little bit over-the-odds for a copy of Seeds IV Punk on vinyl, Doc?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

tee hee.

I didn't say that was MY technique. £10 actually.

I just won The Sound of Konk for £4!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Deadsy s/t - $64.00
Orlando Passive Soul - $100.00

I backed out on the second one at the last second, but I've been trying to contact the former vendors as of late. They've probably already managed to hand it off to someone else.

Atnevon (Atnevon), Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

3 hours to go.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 25 November 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

passive soul is available here used for less than ten dollars US. or it was the last itme i was at twist and shout. call them Twist & Shout
Phone 303-722-1943.

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 25 November 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

$100 for :zoviet*france: Mohnomishe. a little more than i should have, but i've never regretted it. esp. since Eostre ran me less than $30. and a buncha used titles in the $40-50 range - Skullflower Ruins, SCG 330,003 Crossdressers ..., MV&EE's Ragantula - which seems about right, given their respective followings.

i was completely willing to fork over $100+ each for the Can am des Puig Book of Am Vol. 1 CD and for the first Kiyohiko Senba & Haniwa All-Stars CD, but demand for these was so much less than i'd expected. i did overpay for Haruomi Hosono's Monad box, though. so maybe it's all about karma.

good luck, Nick! not to stoke the flames, but it's worth every penny of whatever you end up paying.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Thursday, 25 November 2004 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

oh - single CD. scratch SCG.

off the shelf, Hiroshi Shiotani Oto No Hajimari Wo Motomete was pretty pricey ($35-40). damned JP art-gallery editions and the David Toops who make them sound so desirable.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Thursday, 25 November 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Usually if a CD costs more than $30 or so, I look for vinyl instead. It's strange how often valuable CD does not equal valuable vinyl, and vice versa. Game Theory's catalog being a good example.

dlp9001, Thursday, 25 November 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

1hr 34mins to go, still winning on $55.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 25 November 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck it. I'm bottling out at $76. Fabulousmuscles can have Disco Inferno's Second Langueg EP on CD in excellent condition. BASTARD.

BASTARD.

BASTARD.

BASTARD.

I am feelign sad.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 25 November 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

When there's ten seconds to go I'm gonna bid $77.

Just in case, like.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 25 November 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I REALLY WANT THIS YOU BASTARD.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 25 November 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Lost.

Bugger.

Oh well. I feel justified on spending £40 on myself now.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 25 November 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

$16

Leelee, Thursday, 25 November 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Eh?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 25 November 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I paid $6 for that!

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 25 November 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

When and where?! I've seen two for sale in the last 18 months; the other was from an Amazon zShop who had HIDEOUS feedback, so I decided against it.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 25 November 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I found it at amoeba in berkeley about two years ago. If I ever see another one I'll let you know.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 25 November 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I would be more than grateful. (Don't expect $70 though!)

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 25 November 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

you can have a CD-r of it if you like but I'm guessing you already have one from Ned

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 25 November 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Bad luck Nick, next time try sniping it in the last 10 seconds.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 25 November 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

mercello's post above reminded me that i paid A$50 for plush "fed", so that's the most i've spent.

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Thursday, 25 November 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

damn. sorry about this Mr Sick. point me in general direction of what the cover looks like and i'll keep my eyes peeled ..

mark e (mark e), Friday, 26 November 2004 08:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Sick, weren't you that outbid me for a Papa Sprain record a few months back was it? Not that it was a lot of money mind, but IIRC the bidder's name was 'Asshat' so I figured it was someone from around these parts...

NickB (NickB), Friday, 26 November 2004 09:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never bought a Papa Sprain record, and ym eBay handle is, imaginatively, njsouthall...

Mark, the cover looks like this http://www.bar-none.com/store/media/discocv.jpg only with a street instead of a countryside - i.e. it's got the weird soundwave-semicircle type of thing going on.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 26 November 2004 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

$100 for :zoviet*france: Mohnomishe. a little more than i should have, but i've never regretted it. esp. since Eostre ran me less than $30.

Is this for CDs? I've got the vinyl of those two.

Why Does Herr Dadaismus Run Amok? (Dada), Friday, 26 November 2004 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

ah ha .. ok. will keep eyes peeled.

mark e (mark e), Friday, 26 November 2004 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this for CDs? I've got the vinyl of those two

yes, the CDs. for some reason, all that gorgeous :z*f: vinyl rarely commands the high prices that the first run of Charrm CD reissues does. criminal, really. and the sums for which Shadow, Thief of the Sun and the :z*f: Mort Aux Vaches CD often change hands are just plain ridiculous.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Friday, 26 November 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Dammit, thought I was on to a gold mine there. I've got the one in the hessian sack too.

Why Does Herr Dadaismus Run Amok? (Dada), Friday, 26 November 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got Shouting At The Ground on vinyl, guess that's not worth much either. Is there some sort of 'most expensive vinyl you own' dick-waving thread somewhere? I can feel a little wang-waggling coming on...
