Haha. I bet their record sucks though.

the record is awesome. one of my favorites of the year, actually.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

That's not what I heard.

The ILXor who told me they suck on AIM to thread...

I like the song and video a lot, despite the arguable misogyny. Nothing else on the album compares, but its not bad.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

everyone else is teh dumb, it's that simple. it's gnr + emo. we knew this was coming.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

It's one of the only things on MTV I like right now. I think the video might make the song seem better than it is.

Between this and the Say Anything album I have to wonder if emo is reaching some kind of peak of farcical absurdity. Well, I hope this is the peak.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Great song, great video.

Also: The Used's "Take it Away"

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought they were Canadian (because their video looks so shitty).

Huk-L, Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha Anthony, I listened to that Say Anything album because a good friend of mine's friend is in the band and he wanted me to review it.

God, I could barely make it through one listen. Rough stuff.

Are those guys self-aware? I like some of it, but almost as parody!

"Every Man Has A Molly" by Say Anything

here i am, laid bare
at the end of my rope
i’ve lost all hope, so long
molly connolly just broke up with me
over the revealing nature of the songs
you god damn kids
had best be gracious with
the merch money you spend
because for you
i won’t ever have rough sex
with molly connolly again

here i am, laid down
at the end of my rope
wishing i had not been born
now i’ve spewed too much
i can never shut it up
i thought you should be warned
and i implied black sky
took the needle to my eye
and sucked out all its glow
molly connolly ruined my life
i thought the world should know

i can’t stop thinking about
what she did wrong to me
i can’t figure out
just what i did wrong
i’ll kill myself thinking about
the things that you did to me
molly connolly

I don't think they are. I think I'd like it even less if they were.

What's your take on "A Decade Under the Influence," Anthony?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It's better than most of TBS's crap but it's still a couple minutes too long. To be honest I'm less sympathetic for these kind of emoid long-hairs with every passing week. Lots of bad, cryptic poetry. Lots of passive-aggressive faux-victimhood and a sense of romantic entitlement that I'm not comfortable with. Plus they're not as melodic as my '90s faves (yes, I'm starting to become one of those people who rationalizes the superiority of their own adolescent music to later eras. But I'm trying to avoid it).

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Anthony In Philly will undoubtedly be doing In Praise Of...Superchunk's "The First Part" threads in ten years.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, nice. Romanticizing the 90s comes to me fairly naturally. I've come to terms.

I actually think the TBS single is fucking phenomenal. I voted it at #6 on the Stylus poll (though it probably should've been a bit lower).

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
There's really absolutely no way the album could be as good as the video, right? Hell, the song isn't even that good...but the video is such a damn classic.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 February 2005 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

seems unlikely.

And the song is that good.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 14 February 2005 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

you should try the album, alex. it's gonna sneak up on you. seriously, it's so indebted to gnr.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 14 February 2005 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

or, alternately: you could download the first album from em*sic. we have it. it's not quite as good, but it'll give you a better idea of what they sound like.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 14 February 2005 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
I think it's less emo Guns n' Roses and more emo glam rock. I mean, it's got the Queen guitar solo and everything.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Monday, 28 February 2005 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

When I saw the video for "Helena," I noticed that the singer looks like Jack White if Jack White were a pretty lady.

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Monday, 28 February 2005 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The single is definitely the best thing on the album. But, if you start the album from I'm Not Okay and listen to it back around in that order, then it's slightly better. Starting from track 1 never worked for me, the first song is REALLY bad. And yes, I know it tells a story etc, but I don't care.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 28 February 2005 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

five years pass...

so this album is pretty fantastic and even from one listen I might rate this higher than the black parade

just has such an insistent, desperate balls out drive to everything

tumlbrah (dayo), Monday, 27 September 2010 12:47 (fifteen years ago)

oh yeah, Three Cheers is way better than Black Parade

new single sounds good on first listen, starting to feel optimistic that this album will be more like Three Cheers:
