Brandy - Should I Go
Samples Coldplay, i'm not sure which song, but it was a big hit, hey rappers like Coldplay, the song with the big beautiful seering piano melody, beat stomps and cushions it into a big white duvet, Brandy breathes and stops and, dj on Deja Vu at like 2 in the morning when they're playing all the slow jams and taking phonecalls from Lady Bashy in Clapton, you're sleepy but not tired, lying on your back with lights off and headphones clamped around ears, typing unsent text messages into your phone, he's wheeling it like ten times on the spot, "listen Lahndahn, what is. She. On. What is she on Lahndahn??? Cheeeez". It's fucking perfect.

Ciara - "Pick Up The Phone"

Channels the exact way Aaliyah used to float and drift over her songs; it's got amazingly ambiguous lyrics, every time I listen to it I see it from a different angle - Ciara is desperate for her boy to answer her calls, but the nature of their relationship is never made clear: is she a neglected girlfriend? Is she suspicious or worried by her boy's lack of communication? Is it an unrequited crush? Is she a psycho stalker? And as she repeats the title over and over again it gets harder to tell.

also Brandy "Focus", Christina Milian "Someday One Day", Teedra Moses "For A Lifetime".

Twista & R Kelly - So Sexy (Chapter 2 - The Remix)

Calm and warm like just after you've came onto your stomach. I don't know why they're saying "wee-ooh wee-ooh wee-ooh wee-ooh", Kells has a strange knack for turning potentially cringey lyrics into gems, "never had a pool party like this, never sipped on Cris much as this, never been to an island like this", Twista is Twista, you imagine his weird, humble, Squirtle face, all cute self-confidence and bravado.

Christina Milian - "Someday One Day"

the stuttering beat, the backing vocals and strings cradling the main vocal line, comforting it/wrapping it up, the music box tinkles, the skipping heartbeat of the piano, the way it totally sounds like she's singing about a girl who's gonna change her life.

three weeks pass...
Van Hunt - Seconds of Pleasure

anything that resembles Sly & The Family Stone during Fresh is good in my book. Van is very much influenced by Sly, his debutalbum's great, this is one of my favorite slow jams

Shame Britney didn't release Back of My Hand, surely one of the best songs about masturbation

Guuzbourg (Guuzbourg), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 13:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Didn't release as a single, surely

Teedra Moses - Backstroke
A single dollop of treacle wending its way slowly down yr back

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 23:14 (nineteen years ago) link

"My Place" -- Nelly/Jaheim. A pleasantly old-fashioned R&B groove, with a nice hook.

Jagged Edge - "What's It Like"
