From the press release:

Love is a game that two can play and both can win...
DFA Records Announce Partnership with Astralwerks Records

DFA Records and Astralwerks Records are proud to announce a collaborative release effort, which will deliver projects from The Juan Maclean, Delia Gonzalez and Gavin Russom, and Black Dice over the next year, alongside continued vinyl releases in the traditional DFA style you know and love.

The DFA will continue to produce and remix exciting new projects over the coming months, in keeping with their previously acclaimed output.

Astralwerks, home to such bands as Phoenix, Caesars, Air, and The Chemical Brothers is the perfect label to partner up with DFA, as both are forerunners of electronic music today.

Astralwerks GM Errol Kolosine commented: "We've all been huge fans of everything DFA have produced - for us its a dream come true to bring our expertise to their exceptional vision and style. Astralwerks has worked with only a few labels to this extent in our 12 year history and DFA boasts an A&R and production aesthetic we feel truly excited about embracing completely."

now all DFA needs to do is sign Basement Jaxx and we're aces.

honest question: what will "astralwerks embracing dfa's A&R aesthetic" actually consist of?

now all DFA needs to do is produce Basement Jaxx and we're aces. :)

tricky (disco stu), Friday, 20 May 2005 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

(or ok maybe they meant "production aesthetic and A&R", in which case same question)

This is all part of my "late 90s 'electronica' fans become indie disco converts" conspiracy, I swear.

mike h. (mike h.), Friday, 20 May 2005 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

so basically DFA has a P&D with administration for Astralwerks. They probably just wanted to shift the backend of the label so they can concentrate on the creative side.

If Astralwerks doesn't get their fingers in the pie it is probably a brilliant move.

Yea, Black Dice and Juan MacClean are TOTALLY indie disco.

I didn't mean to be so literally. Just pretend I said "DFA fans." The first Goldsworthy/Murphy work was released on Astralwerks (Primal Scream), wasn't it?

You are silly.

Eno and The Beta Band are SO Electronica!

Neu! too. Electronica TO THE MAXX!

dfa going through astralwerks seems like EMI acknowledging the relative indie-ness of the label, to me.
its sort of like being sent down to triple a ball, tho its realistic and probably smart. i wonder about LCD? so they're not part of this i guess?

noizem duke (noize duke), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm being ridiculous, it's definitely not too much of a stretch to see them working with Astralwerks, content-wise. Still, aren't the large majority of Astralwerks releases just US distribution for acts from Europe?

mike h. (mike h.), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

yes this is what they do. theres not much to speak of ON the label. radio 4? golden republic?

noizem duke (noize duke), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Over the last few years, Astralwerks has shown an uncanny knack for signing the blandest rock bands extant. The label has been moving further and further away from electronic music. Linking with DFA seems like a desperate stab for hipness.
