Hey Im from the US but Im currently in Britain for my study aboard program. Anyways Ive been combing the streets of London for Music stores but Ive only found Virgin and Rough Trade. Anyone know of any good music shop in london--especially for post punk, goth rock and funk?

Secondly could some people tell me some good pubs/music pubs/venues out there?

Also is there a good place that rents guitars?

I just studied abroad there for three months and never really found much besides the big shops myself. Some markets might be worth checking out, as they had weird selections. There probably are some smaller places worth checking out, so check "Time Out London," as both the magazine and the book might be worth flipping through.

London is, along with NYC, the best record-shopping city in the world.

You can't go wrong in Soho, really.

There is a street called berwick street and another called Poland street and another next to that and one that runs across those. there's also Camden and Notting Hill and Hackney and Brixton and Covent Garden and Stanmore...

Berwick Street seconded: MVE, Selectadisc, Sister Ray, to name but three lovely shops there.

Also, Disque on Chapel Market right near Angel tube is fantastic, well-stocked and staffed by unpatronising, knowledgeable and friendly people.

As to venues, it really depends what you're after. Camden will satisfy your underground indie needs with about 9 venues to choose from; Metro on Oxford St (right near Tottenham Court Road tube) is slightly more varied and home to the legendary Blow Up club night, and for bigger bands, how about Brixton Academy, Shepherd's Bush Empire and the Scala in King's Cross?

You can't go wrong with those small branches of HMV they have at train stations.

Tokyo trumps 'em both I'm afraid.

for G-G-Goth specifically go to Resurrection Records in Camden
http://www.resurrectionmusic.com/shop/index.html

Also Sister Ray in Berwick Street has a good goth/industrial section. and it's a nice shop anyway for all sorts of other stuff. . .

Try the 'Minus Zero/Standout!' shop(s) for all sorts of weird underground / indie / psychedelic / out of print stuff, you can combine it with a trip to Rough Trade in Talbot Street.

For club can't go wrong with our disco at plastic people in shoreditch on Fridays. Truly great. www.ourdisco.com

For pub try nambucca in Holloway. They're trying to do something different and its slowly but surely coming off. www.hollowayroad.co.uk

Buffalo Bar on Highbury corner is always worth checking out as well.
