ok now the trick is to recommend me stuff in this vein. i'll cut out some of the more obvious possibilities

alice coltrane, pharoah sanders, anything on soul jazz, light of saba, kirk degiorgio, urban tribe, theo parrish, three chairs project, cannonball or nat adderly, anything sampled by pete rock or the ummah, any of the artists in that list above or their sideprojects.

or we could just talk shit about how pretentious the west coast "new school" is.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 20 January 2005 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

pretentious or just stoned?

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 20 January 2005 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

the two aren't mutually exclusive!! quite the opposite!!

one month passes...
vahid, do you have this comp? where'd you find it? how is it? it looks pretty good, but then again, i'm from the west coast and pretentious

i downloaded it from the slsk. i can burn you a copy if you email me.

yes, it is very very good. it is to kozmigroov and detroit downbeat what cherrystones is to psych and neo-folk. sort of.

detroit downbeat - is that what the kids are calling it these days? if so, i'm a HUGE fan.

some other things that i've heard lately that sound like this are the new Lizz Fields (spacek production & Jill Scott vocals), Platinum Pied Pipers (didn't love the singer from the clips i heard on the ubiquity site, but not terrible) and three others i've not heard but have heard namedropped Plant Life, jneiro jarel, Vanishing system

vahid, i might eventually take you up on that offer. a good friend from LA knows all those cats and might already have it. other wise expect an email.

actually the only people on that list who really qualify as "detroit downbeat" are dabrye and jaydee (cause they're the only ones from detroit) but i think that sound is sort of the hot thing in downtempo music right now (add in theo parrish and you've got it covered).

i think i may have sort of stolen the term from this compilation (which isn't the same thing, it's deep house) or heard it somewhere else. i kind of prefer "downbeat" to "downtempo" if only because it doesn't sound completely stale.

but yeah, i made up that term, though i think i may have sort of stolen the term from this compilation (which isn't the same thing, it's deep house) or heard it somewhere else. i kind of prefer "downbeat" to "downtempo" if only because it doesn't sound completely stale.
