Wire.

Wire, but not to wee on Magazine. They're both great. The day someone asks me to choose between those bands is the day I give that someone a hug.

Xii (Xii), Friday, 21 January 2005 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this really even necessary? (Wire, of course.)

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 21 January 2005 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone compared them once, said the music was sorta similar.

I've been a big Wire fan for a while, but it was only recently that a friend bought me Magazine's first two albums for my birthday. I guess Wire have to win because of a much larger output of quality stuff, but I'd be interested to hear the views of someone who reckons Magazine is better. I'm sure there must be some of those on ILM.

Sasha (sgh), Friday, 21 January 2005 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

magazine:
small quantity, high quality. musically, punk + new "new wave of punk" synth guitar and bass sounds, lyrically punk-ish richard iii under-the-skin home-truth wanker covering sexual politics and audience/band dynamic (Devoto possible weak link qua ironic hero/center of attention front /old man's secrets stuff)

wire:
high number of high quality small pieces. musically, unique attitude conveyed via consistent patent dissonance, so again "new" use of guitars, lyrically wider, not just rotten, if glib more PR firm cunning, more cohesive "whole band" projection (fly in oitment as deliberate long song rock out = very annoying, good at 45rpm)

both used invitation punk provided to do their own unique musical thing and branched out lyrically, not overdoing attitude for its own sake, both saw songs as seperate unique entities, both used albums well in the time of punk singles, both stopped when they knew it was time
(am ignoring mid-wire and recent send/burn and buzzkunstz)

yeah, leave them alone, they both rocked in every sense, pushed, artful, both punk++ to me

i have to admire both and still enjoy the albums from that time 25 years ago

george gosset (gegoss), Friday, 21 January 2005 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

WIRE. Magazine was very good though.

the first church of latebloomer, friend of plebians and santa (reformed) (latebl, Friday, 21 January 2005 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, magazine was my first love, but i can like them both, both measured snotty + measured vagueness, i admire their differences from the punk groups crowd, both so unique

and they both rocked

wanna bring in the Stranglers ? that comparison would be extra awkward. They stood out, snotty, obnoxious, but they rocked too.

george gosset (gegoss), Friday, 21 January 2005 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Wire

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 January 2005 02:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Stranglers >>>>>>>>>>> Wire>>>Magazine.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 January 2005 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

alex > what ?

sasha, i assume you _have_ heard (3rd album) "correct use of soap" (faultless cf: 1 & 2) or "play"(live, they rock) or "magic, murder and the weather"(a real head-scratcher)

george gosset (gegoss), Friday, 21 January 2005 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

alex you're nuts. i like magazine and the stranglers but wire easy for me. it's not remotely close.

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 21 January 2005 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

(and killing joke having thrown in their hat with new zealand and shown their "true colours" (spit enz pun), should not count, please)

george gosset (gegoss), Friday, 21 January 2005 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

what about wire magazine? its like both with more space and worse words

elwisty, Friday, 21 January 2005 04:13 (twenty-one years ago)

what is "invitation punk?"

I have a weird bootleg I got some years back with Wire live on one side and Magazine live on the other.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 21 January 2005 07:12 (twenty-one years ago)

wire.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 21 January 2005 09:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Wire. No contest, not even close.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 January 2005 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Why did I read this at first as "The Wire vs any other Magazine"

Anyway...
Stranglers? are youse Nuts?

Wire > Magazine >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Police>Stranglers

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 21 January 2005 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The Stranglers were more fun than Magazine

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 January 2005 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

The Wire vs Nuts

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 January 2005 10:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll admit, I only have a ver old 'best of' of the magz. But I have seen the strangs live and enjoyed the first 15 mins, then got bored and went home.

Oh no! it was a festival!
Oh OK! they were the last band.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 21 January 2005 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

wire, and wire magazine, over magazine. any time.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 21 January 2005 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Wire were great, but does this mean Wire, the entire back catalogue, or Wire the first three albums. In either case, even though I really like Wire, Magazine are one of the most holy bands for me (Popol Vuh/VdGG/Magazine = my holy trinity, or something) so Magazine, thanks.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

wire: the first three albums is just a tiny, tiny part of the godlike genius that is wire: the whole thang. woo.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

and, d'oh, for that reason alone it has to be wire. i mean, longevity and protracted genius. that's just too good to be true.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

That reminds me, I thought I saw Howard Devoto in Shoreditch the other day - but everyone in Shoreditch looks like Howard Devoto

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"protracted genius" hmmm. They had their moments of it, certainly.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to an art installation opening at the Baltic last night, and about 1/4 of the people there looked a bit devoto-esque, now you mention it.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post

see, i adore the "beat-combo" period ... heh, maybe i should revive Wire in the 80s - Classic Or Dud?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

cor, that tracklink thing is good. ILX never ceases to amaze me.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

What's happening at the Baltic pash?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Something called "whitepanes 2". A kind of sound/light installation. It was good, but suffered from too many people trying to access it at once. I might go back on weds w/my darling and check it out w/less people there .

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, it occurred to me that wire vs the pop group might be a better match. Wire in that case (tho' pop group = awesome)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Magazine - just.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Wire v. Magazine is a good one because they were both arty post-punk rock bands with a slight whiff of pre-punk about them

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose, yes, though they don't sound at all similar to me.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked some interview with Andy Partridge, where he complained that no-one took his band seriously and didn't get their sense of humour, and then went on to slag Wire off for being humourless art bores...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

One of the problems with Andy Partridge was always that no-one ever found Andy Partridge as funny as Andy Partridge did

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 January 2005 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

see, i think wire have a wonderful (and obvious) sense of humour. there's a sly wryness about them; a knowing smirk that tempers the rage.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 21 January 2005 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

yes.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 21 January 2005 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

What rage?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 January 2005 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Wire. By some distance.

coco, Friday, 21 January 2005 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post: have you heard read and burn/send?

or seen them live recently?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 21 January 2005 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, but that's rubbish that is

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 January 2005 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

What exactly are they raging about these days? Their bus passes or something?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 January 2005 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"Stranglers >>>>>>>>>>> Wire>>>Magazine"

"Wire > Magazine >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Police>Stranglers"

No no no no no no!

Magazine > Wire >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Stranglers >>>>>> Police!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 21 January 2005 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Wire. But Magazine is still damn good.

Brett Hickman (Bhickman), Friday, 21 January 2005 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

xx-post: the dying of the light, i think. but really, you don't like the new stuff? blimey, i think it's utterly fantastic: it's everything i hoped for and more.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 21 January 2005 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

wirewirewire

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 21 January 2005 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

alex you're nuts. i like magazine and the stranglers but wire easy for me. it's not remotely close.

Hey man, I didn't bring'em into this. I was happy to leave it Wire vs. Magazine. I love both of'em, but I'd always choose Wire (simply better songs). But once the Stranglers are invoked, there's no hope for either. I LOVE THE STRANGLERS!

Is that really that hard to fathom?

Oh, but Killing Joke Uber Alles, of course.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 January 2005 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I love love Wire but admittedly I've never heard Magazine so I can't really choose.

mcd (mcd), Friday, 21 January 2005 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

you must be rectifying that. if wire didn't exist, magazine would win this easily.

er, hang on ...

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 21 January 2005 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

It's Wire for me. Anybody else heard that split Wire/Magazine bootleg called Dominoe? It's Wire at Montreaux '79 on one side with a Magazine Peel session on the other. Wire wins that one, too.

briania (briania), Friday, 21 January 2005 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

It's probably:

Wire>>Stranglers>>>Magazine>>>>>>>>>Wire Magazine>Police.

I did enjoy that recent Wire Live In Germany DVD. Did anyone else?

harveyw (harveyw), Friday, 21 January 2005 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, a lot. which reminds me ... i must actually put the soundtrack CD onto the iPod.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 21 January 2005 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The reason I ask is that Wire never raged before (when they were good) so i don't really know why they're raging now. Unless you count "Mr. Suit", which is silly, or "Mercy", but that's just shouting a lot.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 January 2005 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Check the "Send" album. Raging present.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 21 January 2005 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

If I want to listen to a bunch of grumpy old men shouting a lot I can hang about in the Boston Arms

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 January 2005 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

It's Wire for me. Anybody else heard that split Wire/Magazine bootleg called Dominoe? It's Wire at Montreaux '79 on one side with a Magazine Peel session on the other. Wire wins that one, too.

yeah i mentioned it upthread.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 21 January 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

i'm new to this shambolic and addicting website. it's refreshing to have such a wide range of thought and insightful taste buds, as i have been relying on web magazines for a long time. (pfork and dusted, mostly. i am a huge fan of Saidthegramophone.)

being OCD and unable to make intuitive, preferential decisions, i have devised a system of random music selection to give me surprises...... i bring up a group of lists (i love lists) and use a random number generator to select an album from the list. my favorite one to do this with is The Wire's "Rewind"-- i'd be interested in reading the magazine regularly but the price for a US subscription is ridiculous. anyway, i like the divisions between the main top 50 and avant-rock/dub/beats/global/jazz/composition/etc. i know this is strange and sort of a cheap way to avoid proclaiming individualized opinions on things, but i am more interested in learning and understanding diverse sounds than i am in determining what i like and dislike........

anyway (again), since this site seems to be populated by a lot of knowledgeable and opinionated people (reminding me, at times, of walking encyclopedias), i was interested in hearing what you all have to say about The Wire magazine, its year-end lists, its strengths and weaknesses.......... or some other resources i can use with a similar approach to music discussion-- actually less about discussion (of things i am very badly informed about) than about helping me discover new/innovative/"important"/bizarre music.

as of now, the music i personally identify with most are of the sensitive-indie-generally-sad-but-hopeful variety (i will honestly say that Carissa's Wierd saved my high school existence)--- typically mainstream-media-friendly artists like Sigur Ros, Mountain Goats, Beirut, Francois Virot, Elliott Smith, Bon Iver, Neutral Milk Hotel, and (yes, i am an indoctrinated PFM slave from the Pacific NW) Fleet Foxes............ but i know that this is quite a narrow selection to devote my passionate side to. i would really like to get into more forward-thinking stuff, as well as some other, less-hyped artists like the ones i've mentioned (the latter of which would be greatly appreciated).

tmi tmi tmi i am sorry i just can't stop blabbing!!!!! anyway thank you all.

looooool

country matters, Monday, 22 December 2008 20:47 (seventeen years ago)

hello new guy. meet the last new guy who made an incredible introduction ^^^

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 22 December 2008 20:48 (seventeen years ago)

As for this contention, having heard 154 I would have given it to Wire in a walk, but then I heard The Correct Use Of Soap, which put everything right back into the melting-pot again. Reckon that's probably Magazine's best album.

country matters, Monday, 22 December 2008 20:49 (seventeen years ago)

naw i dont agree.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 22 December 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

It's just got so much punch, barely a second wasted. It may seem slighter than the other albums but I think it's the most insistent.

country matters, Monday, 22 December 2008 20:54 (seventeen years ago)

magazine overall better, because wire can be a bore at times
but some wire songs just beat everything magazine did. map reference for starters.
