Barenaked Ladies
Zero 7
Thomas Dybdahl
Nikka Costa

Help a sister out! :)

Miss Chevious Grin, Friday, 21 January 2005 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

not going to find a lot of barenaked ladies love around here.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 21 January 2005 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

the cool thing about ILM is that except for fleetwood mac and killing joke, who everyone is required to love (or at least honour their fire), and radiohead and wilco, who everyone is required to loathe, there really is no ILM stance on anything. i'm sure every one of the bands you mentioned has both passionate supporters and passionate haters among the ILM massive. welcome aboard, have fun and don't forget to tip your moderator.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 21 January 2005 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

BDB - coupla nice songs but seems to have gone quite off the simmer lately - is there anything worth hearing from the last two albums?

Barenaked Ladies - only know the one big hit, annoying

Zero 7 - search 'Lo', half of the first album and the remixes of Mos Def, Radiohead and Doris Days, much of it as well produced and arranged as anything by Air's stringy stuff minus the kitsch - sod the rest

Nikka Costa - 'Like A Feather' was alright, what's happened since?

Stevem On X (blueski), Friday, 21 January 2005 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Was nikka costa's album any good?

deej., Friday, 21 January 2005 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

First one has been remixed by Avalanches
Second one had that "chickety china, the chinese chicken" or something which forced ILM to issue a fatwa
Third one is a nice enought Air rip-off who are getting increasingly "soul".
Never heard of the fourth one.
I think the fifth one has a powerful parent which would explain her notoriety despite the lack of any hit songs.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 21 January 2005 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

BDB - Fell in love with him after seeing About A Boy, The Hour of The Bewilderbeast being my favorite album of his

BNL - Ever since a now-ex-boyfriend made me a mix cd of their tunes, I have a soft spot for them. Try "These Apples" off of Rock Spectacle

Zero 7 - I was introduced to them before Air (a friend told me, if you like Zero 7, you'll like Air, french band), but i'm in love with their sound

Thomas Dybdahl - Introduced to me by a Norweigian music-lover and he's absolutely brilliant, the best pipes I've heard since Jeff Buckley - try John wayne, Loves Lost, Adelaide... the more I hear the more I love

Nikka Costa - remains one of my all-time favorite albums, but where in the hell did she go?

Thanks to everyone who've given me advice so far!

Miss Chevious Grin, Friday, 21 January 2005 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

radiohead and wilco, who everyone is required to loathe

I must have been asleep in class that day... What kind of trouble am I in for having love for Ok Computer?

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 21 January 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha we loathe radiohead, even though they topped our 00s albums poll.

deej., Friday, 21 January 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Wilco is my 3rd favorite band at the moment, and The Bends is a terrific album (though I own them all)...

Miss Chevious Grin, Friday, 21 January 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't care for any of those bands--used to like badly drawn boy but have found his recent stuff uninspiring. i did like that nikka costa single that was in the tommy hilfiger ad.

owen reading, Friday, 21 January 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

The Barenaked Ladies make we cause hurt to small animals and children.

Star Cauliflower (Star Cauliflower), Friday, 21 January 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Badly Drawn Boy
-- I liked the track he did on the first UNKLE album. Apart from that, it's not for me.
Barenaked Ladies -- Pop music for whistleheaded Canadian clowns. Avoid at all costs.
Zero 7 - Perfectly nice background music for a cuppa cappucino or a bump'n'grind session, but not something I'd ever get excited about.
Thomas Dybdahl -- Haven't heard'im.
Nikka Costa -- Absolute crap. I'd rather listen to my teeth getting drilled.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 January 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i've still got lots of love for simple things.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 21 January 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Try "These Apples" off of Rock Spectacle

Better yet, try "These Apples" off of Maybe You Should Drive. I think almost everything on Rock Spectacle is better if you hunt down the original album where it appeared. I also think Maybe You Should Drive is hands down their best record.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 21 January 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Radiohead! (woops...should of put that on the blasphemy page)

Star Cauliflower (Star Cauliflower), Friday, 21 January 2005 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

wait! i love radiohead. hmmmm....i'm guess i'm just not like the other kids

The Bends is a terrific album (though I own them all)

I have all of them too... I figured Ok Computer was the safe one if there were detractors in the crowd. (It is my favorite Radiohead record still as well.)

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 21 January 2005 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

that was supposed to be "want to cause hutrt." I don't actually hurt small animals and children. I'm very hungover.

Star Cauliflower (Star Cauliflower), Friday, 21 January 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't listen to anybody here unless it agrees with an already held opinion.

the first church of latebloomer, friend of plebians and santa (reformed) (latebl, Friday, 21 January 2005 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The first and last BDB albums are wonderful, but the second is quite bad. I think he agrees, too, because all that horrid excess was jettisoned for the new album.

i can't stand BNL, but i've had a different exposure level to them, living in canada. blech.

it's not so much that we generally hate the records of radiohead and wilco, but that we generally hate the wanky spectacle that both radiohead and wilco have become. you'll find defenders of both bands, i think, but very few people willing to defend the antics and hype, which are disappointingly conflated with the records.

derrick (derrick), Friday, 21 January 2005 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i like radiohead's wanky spectacle. (that sounded gross).

Star Cauliflower (Star Cauliflower), Friday, 21 January 2005 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard a Zero 7 album once and thought it was one of the wackest things I'd ever heard in my life.

King Kobra (King Kobra), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

JINX

see! that's what happens when you try to like radiohead on ILM!

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Dybdahl. Although he can be overwhelming sometimes, especially when the music is more spare. Definitely heard about him first (and only) on ILx.

Zero 7 seem to approach Air greatness once and while, but also trip over that fuzzy elevator music line more often.

bnw (bnw), Friday, 21 January 2005 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

wilco has antics?

what's ilm's stand on moxy fruvous?

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Friday, 21 January 2005 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i like radiohead's wanky spectacle. (that sounded gross).

-- Star Cauliflower (spen...), January 21st, 2005.

So that's what's wrong with his eye.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 21 January 2005 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

good call!

anyone feel like telling me how to make italics?

Miss Chevious Grin, Friday, 21 January 2005 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Badly Drawn Boy - I'm a big fan of About A Boy, but little else
Barenaked Ladies - Gimmicky, but a few songs are catchy (Old Apartment is pretty great, imo)
Zero 7 - Meh
Thomas Dybdahl - No idea
Nikka Costa - Hype that never worked

Brett Hickman (Bhickman), Friday, 21 January 2005 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Wilco. Please don't ban me. :(

Mickey (modestmickey), Friday, 21 January 2005 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone feel like telling me how to make italics?

Just use HTML tags.

e.g. This is in italics
(replace square brackets with > and <)

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 21 January 2005 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Heheh... I suppose I could have just written it out

Type:
<i>This is in italics</>
and you will get:
This is in italics

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 21 January 2005 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Argh!

There should be an "i" in the "</>" at the end there... like this: "</i>"

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 21 January 2005 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

italics, weeee!

miss chevious grin, Friday, 21 January 2005 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

damn, that didn't work.

miss chevious grin, Friday, 21 January 2005 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

YAY, me!

miss chevious grin, Friday, 21 January 2005 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Badly Drawn Boy - Shot his wad on his 1st record
Barenaked Ladies - Makes me want to smash things
Zero 7 - Snoozefest
Thomas Dybdahl - ?
Nikka Costa - ?

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 21 January 2005 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Badly Drawn Boy = Badly drawn career
Barenaked Ladies = Naked pathological suckiness
Zero 7 = Zero talent
Thomas Dybdahl = ?
Nikka Costa = Costa million dollars for me to listen to this tripe

mcd (mcd), Friday, 21 January 2005 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Moxy Fruvous! Man I haven't listened to them since high school. They were fun, and seeing them live was undeniably a fantastic time, but I just haven't had the urge to revisit them.

Jade M., Saturday, 22 January 2005 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll admit to getting Moxy Fruvous, Arrogant Worms and Three Dead Trolls In A Baggie mixed up all the time. I like whomever did 'Toronto Sucks'.

derrick (derrick), Saturday, 22 January 2005 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Thomas Dybdahl is certainly not typical ILM fare, but there are a few admirers of Scandinavian melancholy-ish guitar stuff around here. I love the stuff, it has a lightness of touch missing from the equivalent UK stuff, and "Stray Dogs" is a fine album, though it's actually the backing vocals I like the most off it.

edward o (edwardo), Saturday, 22 January 2005 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post and off topic:

I hate the SkyDome and the CN Tower too;
I hate Nathan Philips Square and the Ontario Zoo!
The rent's too high,
The air's unclean,
The beaches are dirty,
And the people are mean!
And the women are big and the men are dumb
And the children are loopy 'cause they live in a slum!
The water is polluted and the mayor's a dork!
They dress real bad and they think they're New York...
In Toronto . . . !
Ontario . . . oh-oh!

"You know . . . now that I think about it, I pretty much hate all of Ontario!"
"Yeah! Me too!"

I hate Thunder Bay and Ottawa,
Kitchener, Windsor, and Oshawa!
London sucks and the Great Lakes suck,
And Sarnia sucks and Turkey Point sucks!

I took a trip to Ontario to visit Brian Mulroney!
He beat me up and he stole my pants
And he put me in a tree!
I went to see the Maple Leafs
And got hit in the head with a puck.

"Uh I don't even know how they did it . . . I mean, I was playin' the organ at the time!"
(And Alan Thicke sucks!)

Ontario . . . oh-oh-oh sucks.

"Come to think of it, I pretty much hate every gosh darn province and territory in our country!"
"Well except Alberta!"
"Oh yeah, of course I love Alberta! Lot's of cows, rocks, trees and dirt . . . mmmmoo moo moo!"

But . . . I hate Newfoundland 'cause they talk so weird
And Prince Edward Island is . . . too small.
Nova Scotia's dumb 'cause it's the name of a bank;
New Brunswick doesn't have a good mall!
Quebec is revolting and it makes me mad!
Ontario sucks . . . Ontario sucks.

"Manitoba's population density is 1.9 people per square kilometre! Isn't that stupid?!"

Saskatchewan is boring and the people are old!
And as for the territories . . .
They're too cold!

"And the only really good thing about the province of British Columbia is that it's right next to us!"
'Cause Alberta . . . a-a
Doesn't suck!
But Calgary does . . . !

derrick (derrick), Saturday, 22 January 2005 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

not going to find a lot of barenaked ladies love around here.

oh i like bnl a lot!! partly because i like 3 minute pop songs a lot, partly because the singer is a dreamboat. hubba hubba

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 22 January 2005 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Also: "It's All Been Done" - one of the best power-pop singles of the 90s.

edward o (edwardo), Saturday, 22 January 2005 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Badly Drawn Boy -- Haven't heard.
Barenaked Ladies -- I like their song about alcohol. The name is a stumbling block for some reason.
Zero 7 -- Haven't heard of.
Thomas Dybdahl -- Don't know. At a glance, I momentarily thought it might say Arnold Dreyblatt who is okay, but a little boring.
Nikka Costa -- Don't know.

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Saturday, 22 January 2005 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

all I know about Nikka Costa is that when her album dropped there were posters of her all over New York where you could see a good two inches of her ass crack.

shookout (shookout), Saturday, 22 January 2005 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I heard some Badly Drawn Boy on NPR's "All Songs Considered" site and lost interest.

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Saturday, 22 January 2005 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

the mayor of toronto really was a dork

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Saturday, 22 January 2005 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Badly Drawn Boy

Man, did this guy just take a complete fucking shit circa-About a Boy or what? I know you think I'm kidding, but EP2 and EP3 really are two of the greatest records ever made.

Barenaked Ladies

I hate that "One Week" song, I hate that album, I hate that band, I hate everything that they stand for... but I really like the line "I'm the kinda guy who laughs at a funeral."

Zero 7

"Climbing Up the Walls"! "Destiny"! "Give It Away"! Rockin'!

Thomas Dybdahl

Who?

Nikka Costa

Ugh. "Like a Feather." Horrible song.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Saturday, 22 January 2005 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

But I dig the words, they still remain folded up in my wallet...

I'm coming out of my wishing well
Where only echoes lonely hear my prayers
I'm coming around to bending
Cause my resistance been far too persistent
I've come too far to force it
so I'll watch it slide and land
I could come on strong and willful but
I'd rather watch it fall to the palm of my hand

(Chorus)
And when I
set it free
like a feather
it will be
And when I rise
to see it done
like whatever
it will be
it will be

I'm taking a breather baby
From sitting on pins waiting for my sky to fall
I'm taking up giving in
So here's the wheel, I'm putting my feet up
Take another look at me baby
Today I'm taking on catastrophe
I'd rather take it easy
Than try to force what's on its way to me

(Chorus)

We're only afraid if we pull back the blinds too far
The light behind that we free will blind other stars
But the truth doesn't blind it helps to see far
So get ready to be
Who you are

miss chevious grin (miss chevious grin), Saturday, 22 January 2005 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Zero 7

"Climbing Up the Walls"! "Destiny"! "Give It Away"! Rockin'!

Those tracks are tight. I had the priveledge of seeing them live at KFOG's Kaboom a coupla years back. They had three keyboardists, one wearing some kind of lounge robe. They were the shit, and the girl who sings "Destiny" is a goddess.
