I'm pissed as I wasn't expecting tix to move quite so fast.
Anybody have a single or pair for sale or comp?
Holla? Please?
(yes i know this isn't craigslist, but i'm trying there too...)

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 21 January 2005 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh shit, this is not good news.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 21 January 2005 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Any chance they'll add another show?

o. nate (onate), Friday, 21 January 2005 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I am also accepting tickets in exchange for reporting on the show! How's that? Any underground indie zine stylees wanna hire me?
Fuck, I've come so low.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 21 January 2005 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost
one can hope.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 21 January 2005 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Might the box office still have some that weren't available through the TicketWeb?

o. nate (onate), Friday, 21 January 2005 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i CALLED the box office.
and ticket web.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 21 January 2005 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

guy at the desk suggested that i call back on the day of the show.
I'll just show up at the door if i have to. i seem to have good luck finding my way into stuff that way; that's how I caught OOIOO and the Streets. Dumb luck favors the stupid.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 21 January 2005 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

craigslist?

that or fly out to L.A.!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 21 January 2005 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm gonna fuckin die laughing if she ends up sucking in the live setting. i mean, with all the hype, she's bound to crack. shit is more anticipated than dizzee's US debut...

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Saturday, 22 January 2005 05:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Well if it's at the Knitting Factory, it will suck. FYI. That place (and APT?) have this magical ability to make you question whether you even like the music you like. If you can't find a ticket it's a blessing in disguise, honestly.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 22 January 2005 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah so i completely missed the whole her coming to NYC thing. i thought it was just the LA knitting factory. FUCK

lemin (lemin), Saturday, 22 January 2005 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Shit, I need to get on that guestlist!

Cameron (raygun), Saturday, 22 January 2005 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

im surprised this isnt at the tribeca grand and free

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 22 January 2005 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Just got my ticket in the mail today. I'm surprised that some of you didn't think it would sell out in a couple days - she has crazy press/industry buzz and the Knitting Factory is tiny. The room will be packed with bloggers and various industry people.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Saturday, 22 January 2005 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

sounds like a wild night.

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 22 January 2005 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahaha!

.ada.m. (nordicskilla), Saturday, 22 January 2005 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

even as a "blog person" i find that funny.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 22 January 2005 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

mmmmmmm, industry people. THAT sounds like a fun show.

Beta (abeta), Saturday, 22 January 2005 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I hope that I'm wrong, but I doubt that anyone will be able to describe this audience as being "binoculars" or "redonkulous" in good conscience.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Saturday, 22 January 2005 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

you could help yourself be wrong by staying home or by giving your ticket to a normal person. couldn't you?

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 22 January 2005 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

yes.

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 22 January 2005 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

will they all be posting in real time from their blackberries?

.ada.m. (nordicskilla), Saturday, 22 January 2005 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

It's official, I am no longer a Normal Person. Thanks for the clarity.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Saturday, 22 January 2005 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

M.I.A. doesn't want any bloggers or fat industry people in the front row.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 22 January 2005 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Are there all that many people outside of the blogging/music press/record industry/online music nerd circle who would be at this show otherwise? She has no radio airplay and her album isn't out in the US yet!

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Saturday, 22 January 2005 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

My girl pointed out (and I agree with her) that Sasha's NYTimes article crowning her the next big thing (and flipping out about her live show) is likely the big draw.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 22 January 2005 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"NYORKER article" obvs.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 22 January 2005 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a page on her in the last Blender

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 22 January 2005 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, I was wondering how big this album is going to be. Judging by her sound alone, I think it really has potential to be huge. As we all know, that's often not the case, though. Is she going to have many fans outside of the "blogging/music press/record industry/online music nerd circle" (to quote Matthew) listening to her album? Or will it be mostly us?

Mickey (modestmickey), Saturday, 22 January 2005 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasn't she on the cover of The Fader at the beginning of the summer or something? I'm not sure how far the attention span runs there, but that could lure people.

mike h. (mike h.), Saturday, 22 January 2005 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

volume got packed for the dizzee rascal thing. and that place is/was huge. ok i guess most of the space was taken by that truck though.

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 23 January 2005 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

but the vibe at that show was suck.

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 23 January 2005 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm bringing my girlfriend, and she's enthusiastic enough to counteract at least 4 blogger nerds. Unless someone yells at her for dancing again, as happened at the last Knitting Factory show, at which point she'll get aggressively enthusiastic, which is even better, kinda.

I would like this show to be bananas, so if I can buy anyone a drink or four, just let me know, but you have to promise to dance if we all promise not to make fun of you, which is sort of the implicit bargain anyway.

Eppy (Eppy), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

ps Although the only good show I've been to at the Knit upstairs involved people who would let me come backstage to drink their beer, so I'm not getting my hopes up or anything. Really wish they had this at Southpaw or somewhere like that.

Eppy (Eppy), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone that I know who is going to this is pretty intent on dancing, so that's a good sign. Usually it only takes about ten people getting into it to make people feel less weird about dancing.

Also, I'm not sure how many people would be interested in seeing MIA if they weren't at least sorta inclined to move.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

If I'm going, I want to meet up with all you blogger nerds.
And I'm going to be going.
Somehow.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

they really need to start setting up pay per view webcams at these things so the bloggers can just stay home.

S!monB!rch (Carey), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, they do at the Knit.

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, so Matt can stay home now.

S!monB!rch (Carey), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

in your best interest of course. you won't have to worry about missing the train back to C--- S----.

S!monB!rch (Carey), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry. C--- S-----.

S!monB!rch (Carey), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Cock Sucker.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a bit confused why people don't want me to see this show.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 24 January 2005 04:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Also: kinda paranoid.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 24 January 2005 04:50 (twenty-one years ago)

_I_ want you to see this show Matt.
I also want you to get me a comp.
"I'll suck yo DICK!"

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 24 January 2005 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"Anybody want some cheeseburgers?"

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 24 January 2005 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't think.

coldblooded, Monday, 24 January 2005 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

xp

coldblooded, Monday, 24 January 2005 05:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I assume it has some relation to the "pick up lines" thread/

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 24 January 2005 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

um, someone said that someone said that someone said that MIA is playing at the paper magazine party tonite? anyone can confirm this?? i dont want to go if she's not.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, well, she didn't play. so disappointed. i went for nothing. though it was open bar and free satay and hush puppies

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 07:04 (twenty-one years ago)

dude you can't fuck with hush puppies

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

MIA should really rename "Arular" to "Hush Puppies Dun Gone"

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I too will kill/suck dick/uh, other things to get a ticket to this.

C0L!N B3CK3TT, Wednesday, 26 January 2005 06:17 (twenty-one years ago)

MIA and Diplo and jarvis cocker are dj'ing at my friends party on saturday. who wanna go?

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 31 January 2005 07:32 (twenty-one years ago)

HOLLA at gmail, below.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 31 January 2005 08:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd also like a lollipop.
Sweet sweet lollipops.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 31 January 2005 08:13 (twenty-one years ago)

http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/tix/58543971.html
I originally read this as eighty dollars a ticket and started getting ill.
Eppy to the rescue!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 5 February 2005 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Also raises hand.

C0L1N B--KETT, Saturday, 5 February 2005 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

let me be the third to hand-raise.

lemin (lemin), Saturday, 5 February 2005 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, me too.

dan. (dan.), Saturday, 5 February 2005 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

well that got kinda surreal near the end.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 6 February 2005 07:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Do tell.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 6 February 2005 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

in the morning i'm tired. short version
nice show and the world's most enthusiastic audience... i've never heard a group get so fucking into it.
When the sing along part on galang came in (ay yi YAAAAAAAAY oh way ee oh way ee ay yi Yaaaay) the roof came the fuck off.
problem was that the joint was overfuckinPACKED. it was quite literally hip to hip and it was hard enough to hold your space much less dance.
what got strange was when mia left, diplo kept spinning.
Then the crowd left.
And it just became a diplo dance party with about a third of the people left.
Then Diplo left and catchdubs spun.
Again, half the people left.
Then Catchdubs left and some OTHER guy took over the turntable and the dancers from MIA's set, two guys with massive drums and an Emcee took the stage and fucking rocked the house... of about forty people.
by then it was about two in the morning and i limped out but they were still going strong.
as for mia herself, she looks like a little girl playing rockstar in the mirror and it's quite endearing; but i was MUCH more impressed by Diplo.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 6 February 2005 08:08 (twenty-one years ago)

and MIA wandering offstage in midset to change clothes after she informed the dense sweating crowd that "oooh, it's too HOT in here" was a SERIOUS fuckin' dud.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 6 February 2005 08:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Diplo was great. I didn't expect him to be quite so much the high school quarterback type -- what a jock. And M.I.A. is a star, even if it's going to take a little while for her to come to terms with it. A little awkward, but endearingly. One of my friends thought she was lip-synching on parts, but I think the mix would've been better if she was -- vocals had that usual hip-hop show tendency of getting buried under the bass. The first part of the show was good, and the closing section -- URAQT, Galang, Bucky Done Gun, M.I.A. (the PFT remix) -- was great. More, please.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 6 February 2005 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to write a bit about the set later (I left shortly after MIA ended, so I missed out on the stuff with Catchdubs that Tofu mentioned.) This is M.I.A.'s setlist for those who are curious:

PULL UP THE PEOPLE
FIRE FIRE
HOMBRE
SUNSHOWERS
10 DOLLAR
AMAZON
------------------
URAQT
GALANG
BUCKY DONE GUN
M.I.A.

That last set was insane. I had a lot of fun, the only real complaint that I have about the show is that "Bingo" wasn't performed.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua (Eppy), Sunday, 6 February 2005 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

A couple of the people I was with were complaining about lip synching, and there was a bit on the choruses etc, but she was most certainly doing the vocals live - there was adlibbing, changes in the lyrics, different inflections, flubs, off key singing on the chorus of "Hombre," etc. I was towards the back in the middle, and the vocals were pretty clear to me.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua (Eppy), Sunday, 6 February 2005 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, I think the people you're talking about are the same people I'm talking about -- were you the Matthew hanging outside with the Brooklynites? I was the friend who stopped by briefly. Anyway, I agree. (And if that was you, I shoulda said thanks for all the good tunes.)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 6 February 2005 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, okay, yeah, that was me. You're welcome.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Sunday, 6 February 2005 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Diplo was REALLY fucking good. Great use of CeCile's "Na Na" before MIA came on.

Eppy (Eppy), Sunday, 6 February 2005 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that had me fuckin' BOUNCIN'.
I was pissed that you COULDN'T dance; there was simply no room to do much more than lean back lean back lean back for the whole set.
Apologies here to the five guys whose legs I humped for an hour and a half. It was a youthful crush.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 6 February 2005 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I was near the front early on and then bailed to the back. Too sardined. The back wasn't much better, but it was a little cooler. I always forget how small that room is.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 6 February 2005 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Just to be clear: it was really packed and hard to dance, but almost everyone was moving and responding. If that room was a bit bigger, it would've been way crazier.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 7 February 2005 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, no doubt. The crowd absolutely LOVED her but they seemed drastically predetermined to. I've never been in a crowd that was quite so excited about an artist; people were foaming. It was actually a little ODD.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 7 February 2005 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

It was definitely a case where the quality of the performance wasn't nearly as important as the presence of MIA and the presentation and hearing those songs really loud.

Oh man, the end of "Galang" was insane - that chant was a real high.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 7 February 2005 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Made me wanna hear it in a stadium.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 7 February 2005 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The Coachella performance could be interesting.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 February 2005 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking about how that visual loop on the screen above the stage felt kinda stadium-y to me - I'm not used to seeing that kind of thing outside of that context. I think that element of the live show was very successful.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 7 February 2005 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

It would be amazing if she could find a way to get a huge video screen that would be the entire backdrop behind her, similar to what U2 used on PopMart but on a smaller scale.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 7 February 2005 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I inadvently managed to walk upstairs which was VIP (bouncer asked me later h ow I got up there) Saw Dave Chappel masturbating on the floor. He's a funny dude.

j q public, Monday, 7 February 2005 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

This raises questions.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

totally loved the show. the vast strata between the energy level of the plebes (floor) and the vips (balcony) was hilarious, as us kids on the ground did our best to move, shout and wave, while the heavies up top sat on their hands rattling their jewelry.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 7 February 2005 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I supppose I initially felt motivated to make some sort of shitty comment about how "everything was a helluvalot cooler once all those fucking hipsters ran off to the afterparty and gave the rest of us room to fuckin' dance to DIPLO", but seeing as most of you here left, I'd be embarrassed to mention it.
Wait...

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

nine months pass...
omg that ROCKS!

Kitty-Beth Smith, Thursday, 10 November 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

Oh, I was so CUTE and unjaded back then.

forksclovetofu, Monday, 10 March 2008 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

doing yourself in spitzer style before gershy gets you

sanskrit, Monday, 10 March 2008 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

Holla? Please?

sanskrit, Monday, 10 March 2008 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

no, no regrets. I'd still probably "holla? please?" for certain shows. I'm shameless.

forksclovetofu, Monday, 10 March 2008 19:52 (eighteen years ago)
