I think it is lovely and really quite fantastic. I think I've listened to it three or four times over today.

.ada.m. (nordicskilla), Saturday, 22 January 2005 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

All Kompakt talk is in the never-ending Kompakt thread!

But yeah, I like this a lot.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 22 January 2005 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't take the Kompakt thread, TMI!

.ada.m. (nordicskilla), Sunday, 23 January 2005 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i agree on the not being able to abide the kompakt thread. there comes a point where certain threads become just to unwildly and are a pain in the ass to read.

william (william), Sunday, 23 January 2005 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh ye of little faith

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 23 January 2005 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

So tell about this Justus Koehncke album (I can't do the Kompakt thread either).

Is it all in the vein of "Hot Love" and "Wo Bist Du"?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, and I just found out about this because of mark p's review.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The rule of thumb for this album is tracks without singing = good, tracks with singing = not that good. The exception is Wo Bist Du. Elan->Schwabylon rules!

W i l l (common_person), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Nothing nearly as camp as Hot Love, Jaymc

W i l l (common_person), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it all in the vein of "Hot Love" and "Wo Bist Du"?

No. Kind of, yes.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the most pleasant.

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

What is?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

the Justus Kohncke album (actually, I was kind of disappointed that he changed up "The Answer is Yes")

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

What did he do to it?

Jedmond (Jedmond), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Elan a lot and Loreilei- but the vocals are a stumbling block for me.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I like it a lot, 8/10 sounds about right. "Elan" is definitely the jam, i might actually like it more than "Timecode" (heresy!)

djdee (djdee2005), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I just didn't like the vocal tracks, too lengthy in my opinion. Also, the changing of language wasn't really my kinda thing - I can't even remember what song it was. I still stand by my opinion that the concept is great - an after clubbing record - but somehow I quickly lost interest. It just didn't really *cling* to me. I loved the Carly Simon cover though. I just keep envisioning those horribly kitschy schlager singers on german telly when I hear him singing. :-)

nathalie barefoot in the head (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

with the exception of "elan", which stuck right away, i absolutely hated this at first. now i listen to it at least four times a week - it's such a light, edifying, low-calorie record.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay I guess I will come out and say it: Will I like this if the Kompakt stuff I like most is the melodic, romantic stuff (like "So Weit Wie Noch Nie") and the real minimal tech-house absolutely bores the shit out of me?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

more than likely, yeah.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

(btw adam i edited the typo out of your subject header for archival reasons.)

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Attn. Sophia Coppola: "Wo Bist Du" would make a good 'native' song for the soundtrack to Lost In Translation 2: Bored In Berlin!

W i l l (common_person), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"weiche zaune" on the album is kinda like that, but i like the remix on kompakt100 a lot more. you should give it a listen

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this available to buy yet?

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, it's already released. In Europe anyway.

nathalie barefoot in the head (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm 90% sure it's out in north america too.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, it's out, I physically got it in the shop on Monday.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Best Craig David update yet.

I miss Craig David.

He never went away.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 3 March 2005 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i heard he never went away.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm listening to the clips on the Other Music list and the german vocals remind me of that one vocal Oval album that i didn't like at the time (wonder what i'd think of it now).

JaXoN Hole (JasonD), Thursday, 3 March 2005 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Craig David should totally sign to Trapez.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 3 March 2005 03:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Pitchfork: If you could have anyone remix one of your tracks, who would it be, and which track?

Köhncke: Rex The Dog and Sono will rework "Schwabylon" for a future 12".

Yay! (nice interview mark p.)

Does anyone know his setup? I was wondering after looking at the pictures in the liner notes. Some cool looking stuff.

T. Weiss (Timmy), Friday, 29 July 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

I agree with mark p, doppelleben is diet kompakt loveliness

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 29 July 2005 05:22 (twenty years ago)

The first track, Yacht samples Slave to the Rhythm. It made me smile.

The Macallan 18 Year, Friday, 1 February 2008 03:10 (eighteen years ago)

Heard the album the other day, liked it. Need to give it a few more listens.

any more thoughts on the new album? really liked the tracks on myspace but reviews have been pretty mixed..

jabba hands, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 03:46 (eighteen years ago)

i really like what's on the vinyl samplers, but that's only about half the tracks.

haitch, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

Didn't make too much of an impression on me, maybe I'll give it another go.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 09:10 (eighteen years ago)

Safe and Sound is the best Justus full length yet. doesn't necessarily have the best individual song but it's the best complete package.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

parage is so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so good

I know, right?, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

So is that sample (I'm assuming it's a sample) in "Parage" from some disco cover of ELO's "Evil Woman" or perhaps an altered version of the original? Cause that's all I hear when listening to it. And, agreed, it's a gem. Also, any change Parage is a contraction of Paradise Garage. Cause the "Parage" side of the 12" is a painting of a disco and the tune itself is oh so disco.

matt2, Saturday, 5 April 2008 03:33 (eighteen years ago)

The picture of which I speak can be seen here: http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?what=R&obid=1104969

matt2, Saturday, 5 April 2008 03:34 (eighteen years ago)

i'm sure that's the reference in the title, yep. such a ruthlessly perfect track.

jabba hands, Saturday, 5 April 2008 03:58 (eighteen years ago)

'parage' is so good it hurts but if we're talking about a "ruthlessly perfect" justus kohncke tune then 'elan' is it.

or something, Sunday, 6 April 2008 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

Bump. Any clues on the sample?

New album out in November

Matt DC, Thursday, 26 September 2013 08:45 (twelve years ago)

One for the Kompakt fans: Justus Köhncke is back with his first full-length in half a decade.

Köhncke has three studio albums – 2002′s Was Ist Musik, 2005′s Doppelleben and 2008′s Safe And Sound – to his name, all of which showcase his ear for colourful, emotionally rich house music.

Having stayed on the radar with 12″s and EPs for the likes of Freak N’ Chic and Nang Records, Köhncke regrouped late last year with career retrospective Bass Ist Musik on Kompakt, and clubbed up with Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor to make fey electro-pop as Fainting By Numbers.

Five years since Safe And Sound, Köhncke is ready to release his fourth studio full-length. Due in November, Justus Köhncke & The Wonderful Frequency Band will feature 10 new tracks. Mouse On Mars’ Andi Toma guests on ‘Flitter Und Tand’.

Justus Köhncke & The Wonderful Frequency Band is due on November 11. Köhncke was among the artists covered on Gregor Schwellenbach’s recent Kompakt-goes-classical set Gregor Schwellenbach spielt 20 Jahre Kompakt,
