I hate my friends' band...a lot.

Have you ever HATED a friend's band? I do, it's awful. This band is made up of an ex-bf, my sis's bf, and these two guys. The two guys just plain suck. And I feel my ex-bf and sis's bf are 'dumbing down' musically because they've been in really good bands before. Watching their set is torture. Such a sad sight. And I'm kinda mean, too. But I know what I like.

I prolly shouldn't have written this here. I'm such an ass! But there it is.

Whoomph?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 23 January 2005 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

It seems almost inevitable that it happens with at least one friend's band.

Hurting (Hurting), Sunday, 23 January 2005 05:48 (twenty-one years ago)

If not most.

Ken L (Ken L), Sunday, 23 January 2005 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

All my friends' bands are ok. I can't think of any that really suck.

Aaron Hertz (AaronHz), Sunday, 23 January 2005 06:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, since I also play in a band, I inevitably also make friends with people whose bands I actually do like, but I also inevitably have people who are already friends who play in shitty bands.

Hurting (Hurting), Sunday, 23 January 2005 06:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I've had friends' bands that weren't so hot, and it sucked. But the one that was really, truly bad was one that was made up of people I only knew of through another friend. I listened to their demo tape on acid and comprehended the true meaning of just how horrible a band they really were. They were all in college, you see. Same school. A college band, bit of dabbling by people clearly never meant to be musicians. I mean they simply couldn't play, couldn't sing, couldn't write, couldn't even turn these things to their advantage somehow. But the acid made it entertaining.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Sunday, 23 January 2005 08:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Even worse when you have to go and see them, stood there cringing with the rest of the 'audience'. Outnumbered by the band members.

I've always employed the "you're good at what you do" cop out. This is cruel as they should be told to stop, forthwith. It's also completely cowardly.

Dude. I'm in a band, and a fellow member feels the need to be all "indie" and like form a community or some shit and so she is friends with all these members of other bands and wants to support them. And they ALL SUCK. Well, OK, a few of them are good. But most of them are just horrible. I guess I'm supposed to network or whatever but dude, I'm sorry, if you suck, you suck. I once very vaguely referenced one of them sucking in a blog post and the guitarist totally called me on it, and I was like yeah, well, you do suck, so. Sorry. It happens. But man, don't give 'em any encouragement.

hahahahahaha

Bimble... (Bimble...), Sunday, 23 January 2005 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

if you want to understand suffering, get some friends who are in PLAYS.

dan (dan), Sunday, 23 January 2005 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan, otm.
My sister dragged me to a play. A handful of her friends were in it
It was billed as a comedy.
It was hilarious but for all the wrong reasons. They were so nervous, kept fluffing their lines and it was about as funny as the electric chair.
Each time one screwed up or let rip with an excrutiatingly unhumerous line, another would wade in and outdo it.
With plays there's no escape either.

Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountain Dog

Surely that's one of the best ILX names ever. It conjures up such strange images. Like a children's movie about a dog that went horribly wrong.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Sunday, 23 January 2005 10:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate every local band. Only because they are shit compared to my band, Ghosts of Television.

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Sunday, 23 January 2005 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I only have one friend in a band and, thankfully, it is *awesome.* Friends who write bad novels and poems are also up there, though.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Sunday, 23 January 2005 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

What about bad porn?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 23 January 2005 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Even bad porn is good porn, kinda.

Eppy (Eppy), Sunday, 23 January 2005 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I myself have been in bands which suck. It's like being with a partner none of your friends like. They grit their teeth and smile; when it's all over they tell you how much they hated the person or band, and how happy they are that you have left them.

thee music mole, Sunday, 23 January 2005 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

This friend of mine --who I feel is probably one of the best, most inventive drummers in a 200 mile radius-- was in two crappy (but lucrative) bands. Luckily he knew they ate it and made fun of them more than I did. Sometimes even while on stage.:D

Will (will), Sunday, 23 January 2005 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I had friends who did bad porn

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Sunday, 23 January 2005 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I occasionally feel like i AM doing bad porn...

Well, your friend is sort of right -- you need bands to trade shows with , and you need people who will come see your band. But of course, it's better to network with good bands.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 24 January 2005 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

And if your band is any good itself, you shouldn't have too much trouble doing this.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 24 January 2005 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, but if people identify you with a genre you don't really like, you attract some things that aren't, um, to your taste.
