I'm really down with the Wire aesthetic, but I don't know enough chichi HTML to prove it. Help me out (Pink Flag, Chairs Missing, 154).

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 23 January 2005 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I was once digging through my dad's almost entirely classical collection and found a copy of "Fire". I was like, "Dad? WTF?"

It turned out he bought it in his music teacher days to be more in touch with what the brooklyn kids he taught were listening to.

Hurting (Hurting), Sunday, 23 January 2005 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Land Of The Loops (if you have a high tolerance for "cute")

fela kuti's covers, mostly designed by Ghariokwu Lemi, are pretty cool!

you conveniently left out Get Ready

donut christ (donut), Sunday, 23 January 2005 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

(I like the album, but Get Ready's album art was just zzzzzzzzzz)

donut christ (donut), Sunday, 23 January 2005 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

you conveniently left out Get Ready

heh.

john'n'chicago, Sunday, 23 January 2005 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

theres some great singles covers out there that more than make up for the mediocrity of get ready. I use the subculture 12" cover as my desktop from time to time.

Juan, the Magic Don (jingleberries), Sunday, 23 January 2005 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

that first spiritualized cover kinda sux, but the rest are super.

john'n'chicago., Sunday, 23 January 2005 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

My copy of Pure Phase is the luminous green edition with metallic logo, a joy as it glows in the dark.

Also Scientist. But it's my (futile) job to quietly rep for Shellac, so I'll do that and then get on with the work I'm supposed to be doing

DJ Mencap0))), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I would've said New Order, but I just couldn't say in good conscience that a a band that put this

http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drc800/c839/c839742q194.jpg

as the cover to one of their albusms had "consistently great album covers".

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

theres some great singles covers out there that more than make up for the mediocrity of get ready. I use the subculture 12" cover as my desktop from time to time.

What's the cover like?

Here in the U.S. on Qwest, we only got the SubCulture 12" in a plain black sleeve.

donut christ (donut), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

That said, the UK covers for the singles for "Everything's Gone Green", "Just Like Thieves", "Confusion", and all the Technique singles (U.S. too) were absolutely great.

donut christ (donut), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahaha, sorry "Thieves Like Us"... (I was confusing my New Order and Cure single song titles...)

donut christ (donut), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I came into this thread intending to post the Ohio Players.

PS: Fire looks like the inspiration for the "Salt Shaker" video!

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

the republic cover has grown on my over the years, esp. after the explanation about the happenings around factory's bankruptcy...

shit I was wrong. Its shellshock.

Juan, the Magic Don (jingleberries), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, ok, yeah the "Shellshock" cover is great...

The pic link you posted is broken, but I clearly remember an "Alex Yeah" or some bright white graffiti saying as much somewhere on the art, and it's always the first thing to grab my attention.

donut christ (donut), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian OTM re: Hooverphonic. Always liked those covers. Their three albums are virtually sonically indistinguishable from each other, but big deal.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

granted, there ARE version of the "Shellshock" single that had a very generic blank sleeve release in the U.S. too, via JVC records. It was a strange one off 12" deal I think.

donut christ (donut), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm assuming The Arizona Record is a Steve Keane painting? (Same fella who did Wowee Zowee.)

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Monday, 24 January 2005 06:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the first two Tortoise covers and Standards, but I don't really like TNT or the new one so I didn't post them.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 24 January 2005 06:33 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, it's steve keene.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 06:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like those John Zorn ones. I've got a few art/photography books that have that kind of stuff in them.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Monday, 24 January 2005 06:49 (twenty-one years ago)

what about joy division ? bowie (ok, only 70's...) ? public enemy ?

whoops, I duplicated one. not that they don't all look alike. admittedly he was coasting a bit on a few of those. the non-Dean covers are all terrible.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 03:51 (twenty-one years ago)

TG and Crass belong on this here thread. But I lack html skillz.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 13 February 2005 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, the cover of Floodland is pretty fucking ridiculous, when ya think about it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 13 February 2005 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

If on Yello's music was as good as their covers.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 13 February 2005 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I think its New Order by far.

But speaking as a huge Poppies fan and Designers Republic fan... fuck a lot of these have dated. Even the later great iconic DR stuff, from the days that the Auslander single comes from, when they were doing the Blech stuff for Warp and whatnot... After that, everyone had to look like that for a while, cute cartoon characters and made-up branding... So maybe they don't get my vote after all.

I'll go with Autechre, but should point out to MindInRewind that Autechre's covers since LP5/EP7 aren't credited to DR and are quite possibly done by the band themselves...
I'm surprised nobody's put up Aphex's scary faces ;)

I never realized it, but most of the Silver Jews album covers look like tributes to Jandek album covers.

No more dad plz, Thursday, 17 November 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

I vote for Can, but I'm too lazy to round up images. Future Days I've always thought was cheesy, but the rest of them through Soon Over Babaluna are great, and some of the post-Babaluna are good as well.

nickn (nickn), Friday, 18 November 2005 08:34 (twenty years ago)

I don't have any, but the Caroliner album covers look pretty fascinating...
